Singapore Institute of Management private institute was established in 1964 by the Economic Development Board with the motive to create professional managers and leaders who can become the flag-bearers of Singapore's economic development. Earlier, this institute created its identity by providing essential skill-set to managers by running short crash courses.
During the 1970s, this institute started three major diploma programs in management studies, marketing, and personnel development. At the same time, this institute also laid a strong foundation for other certificates and degree programs. In the 1980s, this institute collaborated with foreign universities such as the University of London and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs locally. In order to assist local enterprises and MNCs, this university created in-house training and consultancy services.
In 1992, this institute was given an invitation by Singapore's MOE to run the Open University of United Kingdom. This Open University got its accreditation by the United Kingdom Open University and was renamed as SIM Open University Centre in 2002. In the 2000s, this institute also received the MOE mandate to begin its private university for adult learners. This university was named as UniSIM or SIM University.
From 2010 onwards, this institute made many strides such as opening an extended campus, launched the Singapore Management Festival, the launch of SIM International Academy and Platform E. In Singapore, this university has two campuses- Clementi Road and Namly Avenue. The Clementi Road campus is divided into four blocks. This campus has all the essential facilities such as lecture theatres, computer/science laboratories, libraries, multi-purpose hall, eating outlets, administration office, athletes gym, bookshop, heritage gallery, students' lounge, student learning centre, open study areas, student activity hub, educational technology and production studio, dance studio, multi-purpose sports hall with sports therapy room/first-aid room, performing arts theatre, student activity room and tennis courts.
The Namly Avenue campus is also at par in terms of facilities and comprises lecture theatres, eating outlets, administration offices, and entrepreneurship centers. Apart from full-time programs and part-time programs, this institute has many other types of learning programs such as executive programs and conferences, entrepreneurship programs, customized learning, and development solutions.
The alumni list of this institute includes a number of successful people such as Inspector (NS) Gim Joo Hyung, Singaporean MMA Star Tiffany Teo, Tennis Coach Jensen Hiu, Dr. Mohd. Effendy Rajab.
