Established in 1954, Singapore Polytechnic is an open institution of higher education. It is considered to be the first institute of technology in Singapore. The institute mainly focuses on research, training, and studies in the field of technology, commerce, arts, and science. The industry-oriented institution admits students only after their completion of two to three years of studies. The institute began its first classes with a few students. Over the years, it emerged rapidly, and the number of enrolments increased to about 15,900 students. And in 2018, the institute became the first technological college to have 2,00,000 graduates.

The campus of the institute is spread across an area of 93 acres. The campus features six food courts, including Subway, McDonald's, Starbucks Coffee and KFC. It has a bookstore, sports complex, swimming pool, 3 badminton courts, 4 tennis courts, 4 squash courts, 2 volleyball courts, 3 basketball courts, and a gym. Other facilities include a clubhouse, Research & Development centre, several laboratories, and two libraries that consist of a huge collection of books, journals, textbooks, magazines, and research papers. The students are provided with all the required facilities at the campus. They experience a calm learning atmosphere. The campus is close to various cafes and restaurants. Several medical shops and general stores are also set nearby the campus.

The institute offers continuing education programs for the working professionals and full-time diploma courses for undergraduate students. The academic structure of the institute has 11 schools, namely School of Computing, School of Architecture & Built Environment, Business School, School of Chemical and Life Sciences, School of Life Skills and Communication, School of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Mathematics and Science, Media, Arts, and Design School, Singapore Maritime School, and Professional & Adult Continuing Education School.

The students learn under skilled faculty members. Many industry professionals visit the institute for practical workshops, interactive sessions, and guest lectures. The students also get an opportunity to work as interns at notable companies under professionals. In addition, the institute offers three types of scholarships, namely SP Scholarships, SP Engineering Scholarships, and SP Sports & Arts Scholarships. These scholarships are provided to students with a good academic record and the ones who have a weak financial background.

The institute has a list of notable alumni that includes Tanya Chua (Singer & songwriter, 3 time Golden Melody award-winner), Taufik Batisah (Winner of Singapore Idol), Kelly Poon (Famous Pop singer), Chai Keong Toh (IEEE & IET medalist), Pek Jin Shen (Songwriter & Hip-hop artist), and Shih Choon Fong (Former President of National University of Singapore).

Q:   Is it possible to get into Singapore Polytechnic MS programme without work experience?

A: 

SP mainly focuses on Diploma and certificate programs and doesn’t offer MSc (Master of Science) programs. The institute emphasizes practical, industry-related training and has specific admission procedures for local students, including the DAE (Direct Admissions Exercise) which has specific entry criteria and application deadlines. For international students, the application process includes an online application and selected candidates may be required to sit an entrance test based on their qualification. However, SP doesn’t have MSc programs, so whether or not you can get into an MSc programme at SP without having work experience is irrelevant.

Q:   How is applying to Singapore Polytechnic different from applying to other universities in Singapore?

A: 

Singapore Polytechnic is different from other universities in Singapore in that it is polytechnic-focused. It offers various Diploma and certificate programs. There are specific stages for local and international students when it comes to applying to SP. Local students usually submit their final semester results and meet minimum entry requirements in the application process. There are also specific admissions exercises like the DAE which has entry requirements and application period. International students usually submit their online application. Depending on their qualifications, they may take an entrance test. If they are successful, they will need to complete e-Enrolments and apply for Students’ Passes.
