Carnegie Mellon History
The Carnegie University Pittsburgh first opened its doors in the year 1900, thanks to a donation worth USD 1 million by Andrew Carnegie, who envisioned of starting a school that could allow the working class people of Pittsburgh to hone their practical skills, learn new trades and crafts that would improve their overall standard of living, create more jobs and in the process improve the quality of life in Pittsburgh.
The Carnegie Technical Schools and the Margaret Morrison Carnegie College were established.
In 1912, the schools renamed to "Carnegie Institute of Technology" or "Carnegie Tech" that started granting bachelor's degrees. After the end of the second world war, three new schools: Graduate School of Industrial Administration in 1948, School of Urban and Public Affairs in 1968 and the School of Computer Science in 1986, were opened. In 1956, the campus also welcomed the first ever IBM computer.
Carnegie Tech's merger with the Mellon Institute, operated by Pittsburgh's Mellon family in 1967, led to the creation of the Carnegie Mellon University that today forms part of the best universities in USA.
