History
After much deliberation, it was decided that Brunel University’s name should be based on Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He was one of the great British Engineers of the 19th century. In the year 1980, Brunel merged with Shoreditch College of Education, one of the leading teacher training colleges in the fields of Craft, Design & Technology, which became Brunel’s Runnymede Campus. Then, in 1983, the Brunel Institute for Bioengineering was established. The year 2006 marked the 200th anniversary of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s birth, and the 40th anniversary of the award of Brunel University’s Royal Charter. Then, in 2016, Brunel University London celebrated its 50th anniversary after being rewarded with the Royal Charter in 1966. The university has been awarded with Queen's Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education. The award recognises the university for their excellent research work.
