Imperial College London History
Imperial College is born out of the Royal College of Chemistry, which was founded in 1845, with the help of the President of the Council - Prince Albert. In 1853, the Royal College of Chemistry was merged with the Royal School of Mines. In the 1880s, the college's infrastructure improved drastically, with the expansion of facilities and pathology laboratories. In 1881, the Royal College of Science came into existence and in 1887, the Imperial Institute was established.
In 1926, the college opened its first student hostel in Beit Quadrangle and the first recorded film footage of activities at Imperial College London was made on Morphy Day in 1928. In 1957, the college celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 1963, the college collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi). It was to include long-term secondments of Imperial staff, the training of Indian staff and short visits to Delhi by senior Imperial staff. In 2007, the Imperial College London marked its century.
