Chemistry BSc - Batch of 2028
4.2
A world class learning experience
Tips: If you're doing Chemistry at UCL, just know that the workload hits you like a brick right from week one. The pace here is relentless—between the endless hours in the labs, writing up complex practical reports, and being forced to figure out difficult concepts completely on your own, it's a massive step up from high school. Moving to a hyper-busy city like London is a total shock to the system at first, but honestly, the international crowd on campus is so massive that you find your feet and settle in pretty quickly. Finances are another huge thing to plan for. Definitely look into the merit or need-based scholarships UCL offers before you arrive, because every little bit helps when you're paying London living costs. Looking back, I'm incredibly glad I made this choice. The course is tough but the research facilities and labs are top-tier, the professors are leading experts in their fields, and the whole UK uni experience has been completely worth the grind.
Likes (Safety): I gave safety a 5 because I’ve honestly always felt completely secure hanging around UCL. The campus itself is really well looked after—there are security guards everywhere, proper CCTV, and the main walkways around the quad and buildings are bright and well-lit, even if you’re leaving the library late at night. Plus, because Bloomsbury is right in the middle of central London, there are always tons of people out and about, and the tube stations are so close by that you never feel isolated. Touch wood, I haven’t had a single bad experience or sketchy encounter since starting here. Obviously, you’re in the heart of London, so you still need to keep your wits about you and not wander around with both headphones in at 2 AM, but overall the campus feels like a very safe, welcoming bubble.
Dislikes (Public transportation): I gave public transport a 3 because while UCL's Bloomsbury campus is surrounded by major links like Warren Street, Euston Square, and endless Santander bike docks, actually using the network daily is a massive drain on your wallet. TfL fares rack up incredibly fast if you're commuting in from further out every single day, even with a student discount. The biggest issue is dealing with rush hour. Squeezing onto the Northern or Victoria line during peak times is a complete nightmare because the platforms and carriages get dangerously packed. Plus, you have to factor in constant signal failures, random delays, and sudden line closures that completely mess up your timetable when you're trying to make an early morning lecture. It’s definitely handy having the connections right on your doorstep, but the high costs and sheer discomfort of the daily rush hour crush mean it’s far from perfect.
