An honest review of my year at University of Leeds
Tips: Look, the University of Leeds is a solid institution, and there are plenty of chances to push yourself out of your comfort zone and really test your limits. But you need to hear this upfront: it is entirely on you to actually go out and hunt those opportunities down, because nobody is going to spoon-feed them to you. Those extra initiatives are the exact experiences that actually make your time here worthwhile. Aside from that, everything else—like the lectures, the campus facilities, and the daily coursework—is pretty standard uni stuff. My one big letdown was the crowd; I came here expecting my peers to really challenge me and push me intellectually, but that just didn't happen. Honestly, it was a bit disappointing on that front, so just be prepared to find your own drive.

Uni of Leeds - A multicultural journey
Tips: It was an important experience for me. I did get a 5,000-pound scholarship. I learned how different cultures are, and Leeds is a very student-friendly place. I made lovely friends and MET lovely faculty. You get good opportunities. I represented my business school in Milan.
Likes (Public transportation): Easy travel, convenient. Uber is expensive, but you might get used to it in a few months. The bus is affordable and very convenient You can also walk, as nothing in Leeds is too far. If you like to cycle, there are cycling tracks throughout as well, so it's not an issue.
Dislikes (Internships): There was good guidance provided on securing internships and jobs. There is a career service that provides CV checks too and helps you get to your goal. We also have internships on campus that pay you; some are related to your course, and some are generic student ambassador part-time job opportunities.

My Leeds Experience: Academics, Lifestyle, and Career Prospects
Tips: Do thorough research on the immigration laws. This is the part most students who come here with an ambition of landing a job forget about. If you're coming to this country solely for the purpose of education, I would wholeheartedly recommend it, especially Leeds as a city. It is vibrant and beautiful with so much diversity and people from all backgrounds.
Likes (Indian Food): There's a plethora of restaurants in Leeds with cuisines from all across the globe. Not just Indian. There are pubs in every corner, not just for drinks but for good food as well. There are many AYCE restaurants, hot pot, sushi, the list can go on. - I prefer eating food I cook myself, but I do eat out once in a while when I'm out with friends.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Looking at the UK right now, the Home Office has made things incredibly tough for international students. The salary threshold to get a skilled worker visa sponsorship is now up to £38,700 for most roles, which is honestly a massive ask for a fresh graduate. Unless you're doing something incredibly specialized or already have a ton of experience under your belt, trying to get a company to sponsor you straight out of uni is a massive uphill battle. A lot of companies might hire you at first on the Graduate Visa, which gives you two years to work after finishing your degree. But the reality is, once those two years are up, most employers will just let you go instead of sponsoring you because the costs are so high. Companies have to shell out thousands for the sponsor license and the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which most just don't want to do for entry-level roles. There’s also been non-stop talk about the government tightening up the rules even further, like pushing the route to PR from 5 years out to 10, which just adds a massive layer of uncertainty. Being here at Leeds, the uni itself is great, but looking at the bigger picture outside of campus, the overall vibe toward immigrants across the country has gotten pretty tense with the rise of right-wing politics. Honestly, with the visa hustle being this brutal and the general atmosphere shifting the way it is, I’m really not sure if I’d even want to stay here permanently anymore.

Great University, Great Exposure - Just Come Prepared
Tips: Before joining the University of Leeds, students should know that it's an amazing experience, but it does come with its challenges—the cost of living, the weather, and adjusting to a completely new academic system can be a lot to handle initially, so being mentally and financially prepared is really important. The cultural shift is real, as coming from a different country, everything from the food habits and social norms to the pace of life and communication style feels different at first, but you gradually settle in and honestly start enjoying the diversity around you. In terms of scholarships, I did avail myself of one—the process involved submitting a strong personal statement, maintaining a good academic record, and applying well in advance through the university official scholarship portals, and the allowance helped in partially offsetting the tuition, which was a big relief. Overall, I am genuinely satisfied with my experience; the University of Leeds has a strong academic reputation, the course content is well-structured and industry relevant and the UK as a country offers great exposure and career prospects, but it's not a perfect journey, but it's absolutely a worthwhile one, and I would recommend it to any serious student who is ready to put in the effort and make the most of the opportunity.
Likes (Student Life): Honestly, student life at Leeds is an absolute 5 out of 5 and easily one of the best parts of being here. A normal day is usually just a solid mix of hitting lectures, grabbing coffee with friends, and just chilling around campus. The whole vibe here is super lively and inclusive. There’s always something random going on so you never really feel bored or left out. The uni and the student union constantly throw events, everything from cultural festivals to open mic nights, which are awesome for taking a break and meeting people. Plus, the sheer amount of clubs and societies they have is insane. Whether you want a sports club, a debate group, or a society for your own nationality, there’s literally something for everyone. Especially as an international student, joining these groups is pretty much how you find your crowd and make the place feel like home.
Dislikes (Internships): Honestly, I had to give the internship situation a 3 out of 5. Don't get me wrong, Leeds does have some decent tools like the MyCareer portal and they do host job fairs, but the actual support just isn't that hands-on. When you're an international student trying to figure out the UK job market totally from scratch, it’s honestly pretty brutal. The careers team is nice enough if you go out of your way to find them, but they definitely aren't going to chase you down—it’s 100% on you to take the initiative. As for the actual jobs, yeah, there are placements that fit certain majors but it feels super limited depending on what course you're doing and the competition is just crazy. The uni isn't doing a terrible job or anything, but we really need more direct, structured tie-ups for specific degrees.

Leeds Mirror for International Students
Tips: Meeting people from different countries and sharing ideas is a better way to improve your soft skills. The method of teaching there is also unique. For scholarships, one must apply before the deadline, and if you're planning to study abroad, plan in advance, like for the UK, one should plan 10 months in advance. Most students in my course were Chinese, and a few were from different parts of the world.
Likes (Indian Food): Indian food is available all around the campus. However, the pricing of food may be expensive even if you're earning and working part-time. I prefer cooking myself and eating outside once a week according to my budget. I tried stocking nonperishable goods in the first week, and for perishables like milk, bread, fruits, and vegetables, I walk about 2 km to buy them from Aldi, the cheapest store in the UK.
Dislikes (Internships): In the UK or any other western nation, students are on their own. Finding an internship is really difficult, especially for people who haven't had experience there. For an internship, you need good references and support of the academicians, who can guide you through the process. There are career fairs where you can meet people from corporates. However, the application process is really time-consuming, and you waste a lot of time completing it.
