In 1908, the Park building was initially a public library and municipal college. Portsmouth University's main subjects were Engineering and Chemistry in 1908, and then in 1969, the university became Portsmouth Polytechnic. Ten years into its existence as one of the biggest and most successful polytechnics in the UK. The University of Portsmouth outgrew its previous moniker and was granted university status and Portsmouth University came into being.
