History
The University was founded at a time when German Politics was undergoing important societal reforms, thanks to the student movements of the 1960s. The first semester at the University saw only 459 students enroll, mostly in teaching courses. A cooperation contract was signed with the Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research to expand its work in marine and climate research. In 2001, Bremen University became the first in the country to introduce the tenure track system. Today, it stands as one of the best universities in Germany.
