Top Scholarships in Germany For Indian Students 2027
Germany is home to many Indian students, and every year, thousands of them receive financial support through scholarships. Some scholarships pay a monthly stipend, while others cover tuition fees, health insurance, travel costs, or living expenses. If you are planning to study in Germany in 2027, knowing these funding options.
Let's be honest, most Indian students spend months planning their Germany student visa, arranging a blocked account, and calculating living expenses. Scholarships usually come later on the checklist. Many students believe only university toppers or researchers receive scholarships in Germany. That's simply not true.
Germany offers scholarships through the German government, universities, political foundations, international organisations, and even Indian trusts. Some scholarships look only at your academic record, while others value leadership skills, volunteering experience, research interests, or financial need. The important part is knowing which scholarships are actually worth applying for.
Competition is definitely there. Popular scholarships like DAAD receive thousands of applications every year. But many university scholarships and foundation awards receive far fewer applications from Indian students than you might expect. Applying early and choosing the right scholarships can improve your chances significantly.

DAAD Scholarships for Indian Students 2027
If there is one scholarship that almost every Indian student hears about while planning to study in Germany, it is the DAAD Scholarship. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the country's largest scholarship organisation. Every year, it supports thousands of international students, researchers, and professionals through different funding programmes. For many Indian students, this is the first scholarship they consider because of the financial support and global recognition it offers.
DAAD does not offer just one scholarship. Instead, it manages several funding programmes designed for different courses, study levels, and career backgrounds. Whether you are planning a master's degree, research programme, or doctoral studies, there is a good chance you will find a DAAD programme that matches your profile.
What Does the DAAD Scholarship Cover?
The benefits vary depending on the scholarship programme. However, most DAAD Scholarships for Indian students include financial support that helps reduce the overall cost of studying in Germany.
| Scholarship Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Monthly Stipend | Usually around €992 per month for Master's students (may vary by programme) |
| Travel Allowance | Support for travel between India and Germany |
| Health Insurance | Contribution towards health insurance expenses |
| Study Allowance | Additional financial support for academic requirements |
| German Language Course | Available under selected scholarship programmes before studies begin |
Popular DAAD Scholarship Programmes for Indian Students
Not every DAAD programme is suitable for Indian students applying for degree courses. The scholarships below are among the most popular options for students planning higher education in Germany.
| DAAD Scholarship Programme | Who Can Apply? | Funding Offered | Main Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPOS Scholarship | Students from developing countries with professional experience | €992 per month | Minimum two years of relevant work experience |
| Study Scholarships | Master's students in selected academic fields | Monthly stipend and additional benefits | Strong academic record and motivation letter |
| Helmut Schmidt Programme | Students interested in public policy and governance | Monthly stipend and other allowances | Academic excellence and leadership potential |
| Research Grants | Research scholars and doctoral candidates | Monthly research funding | Admission or research proposal accepted by a German institution |
| KOSPIE Programme | Selected engineering students from partner institutions | Research funding | Eligibility under partner university collaborations |
Who Can Apply for a DAAD Scholarship?
The eligibility depends on the scholarship you choose. However, most DAAD Scholarships in Germany expect applicants to have a good academic record, a well-written motivation letter, and admission to an eligible German university or programme. Certain scholarships also require relevant work experience or research experience.
- Indian citizenship or eligibility under the programme guidelines.
- Strong academic performance.
- Admission to an eligible German university or course.
- Motivation letter explaining your study goals.
- Letters of Recommendation (if required).
- Relevant work experience for selected programmes.
One thing many students overlook is the application timeline. Most DAAD Scholarship applications close several months before university admissions. Waiting until you receive your admission letter may leave you with very limited scholarship options. It is always better to start preparing your documents at least a year before your planned intake.
Your motivation letter plays a major role in the selection process. Instead of writing general statements about studying abroad, explain why you chose your course, how studying in Germany fits your career goals, and how the scholarship will help you achieve them. A clear and honest application often stands out more than one filled with complicated words.
Deutschlandstipendium Scholarship
One of the most overlooked scholarships in Germany for Indian students for MS is the Deutschlandstipendium. Unlike many other scholarships, this programme is not limited to a specific nationality or subject. Students from around the world, including India, can apply if they are studying at a participating German university. The scholarship is jointly funded by the German Federal Government and private sponsors, making it one of the country's largest scholarship programmes.
Many Indian students skip this scholarship because the monthly amount appears smaller than DAAD. However, that is a mistake. The Deutschlandstipendium can be combined with part-time work or even other funding sources, helping students cover a significant portion of their monthly expenses without worrying about repayment.
What Does the Deutschlandstipendium Cover?
The scholarship mainly provides financial assistance every month. Besides the money, several universities and private sponsors also organise networking events, mentoring sessions, internships, and career guidance for scholarship holders.
| Scholarship Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Monthly Stipend | €300 per month |
| Duration | Usually awarded for one academic year and may be renewed |
| Funding Source | 50% German Federal Government and 50% private sponsors |
| Additional Benefits | Mentoring, networking events, workshops and internship opportunities at selected universities |
| Repayment | No repayment required |
Who Can Apply for the Deutschlandstipendium?
The eligibility rules are decided by individual German universities. In general, international students, including Indians, enrolled in participating German universities can submit an application. Both new and continuing students are eligible at many institutions.
- Students enrolled or admitted to a participating German university.
- Indian students pursuing bachelor's, master's or other eligible programmes.
- Strong academic performance.
- Good extracurricular achievements or community involvement may improve selection chances.
- University-specific eligibility requirements must also be met.
How to Apply for the Deutschlandstipendium?
Unlike DAAD, there is no central application portal for the Deutschlandstipendium Scholarship. Every participating university manages its own application process, documents, and deadlines. Students need to visit their university's scholarship page and submit the required documents directly to the institution.
The application generally includes academic transcripts, a CV, a motivation letter, and supporting certificates for extracurricular achievements. Some universities may also ask for recommendation letters or proof of financial circumstances.
One practical thing to remember is that deadlines vary from one university to another. Some universities open applications before the start of the academic year, while others accept applications after students have enrolled. Checking your university's scholarship webpage regularly is the easiest way to avoid missing the deadline.

University Scholarships in Germany
Besides government-funded scholarships, many German universities offer their own financial aid programmes for international students. These scholarships differ from one university to another. Some reward academic excellence, while others support students facing financial difficulties or encourage research in specific subjects.
Many Indian students focus only on national scholarships like DAAD and miss university-funded opportunities. That can be a costly mistake because university scholarships often have fewer applicants and may offer better chances of selection. Before accepting your admission offer, spend some time checking your university's scholarship page. You might find a funding opportunity that perfectly matches your course and academic profile.
Types of University Scholarships in Germany
Every university follows its own scholarship policy, so the benefits and eligibility criteria can vary. Some scholarships are awarded automatically after admission, while others require students to submit a separate application. Checking your university's official website after receiving your admission offer is one of the easiest ways to find available funding.
| Scholarship Type | Who Can Apply? | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Merit Scholarships | Students with outstanding academic performance | Monthly stipend or one-time financial grant |
| Need-Based Scholarships | Students facing financial difficulties | Living expense support or tuition assistance |
| Research Scholarships | Master's and PhD students involved in research projects | Research grants and monthly funding |
| Department Scholarships | Students enrolled in selected academic departments | Varies by university |
| International Student Scholarships | International students, including Indians | Financial assistance for tuition or living expenses |
Popular German Universities Offering Scholarships
Many leading universities in Germany have scholarship programmes for international students. While the amount and eligibility differ, these universities regularly provide financial support through merit-based or university-funded schemes.
| German University | Scholarship Availability |
|---|---|
| Technical University of Munich (TUM) | Merit scholarships and selected departmental funding |
| RWTH Aachen University | Research funding and university scholarships |
| University of Hamburg | Merit Scholarship for international students |
| Heidelberg University | Various faculty and research scholarships |
| Freie Universität Berlin | Scholarships for international and research students |
| University of Stuttgart | Selected scholarships and research grants |
One practical tip is not to wait until classes begin. Several university scholarships close soon after admission offers are released. As soon as you receive your admission letter, visit the university's scholarship webpage and note down every deadline. Missing a deadline by even a few days could mean waiting another year.
India-Based Scholarships for Studying in Germany
Not every scholarship for Germany comes from a German organisation. Several Indian trusts, charitable foundations, and educational organisations also provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education abroad. These scholarships can be used along with university funding or other financial support, depending on the scholarship rules.
For many Indian students, these scholarships help reduce education loan requirements in Germany or cover expenses such as travel, accommodation, books, and other living costs. Since the competition is spread across different countries and universities, applying for both Indian and German scholarships can improve your overall chances of receiving financial aid.

Before applying, carefully check the eligibility criteria, application dates, and required documents for each scholarship.
How to Improve Your Chances of Getting a Scholarship in Germany
Winning a scholarship in Germany is not only about having high grades. Scholarship committees usually evaluate your complete profile, including your academic achievements, motivation, leadership skills, work experience, and future career plans. Preparing your German university application carefully can make a significant difference.
- Start researching scholarships at least 10 to 12 months before your intended intake.
- Maintain a strong academic record throughout your studies.
- Write a personalised motivation letter for every scholarship instead of using the same one.
- Request recommendation letters well before the deadline.
- Highlight internships, research work, volunteering, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities.
- Improve your English or German language test scores if required.
- Apply for multiple scholarships instead of depending on a single funding option.
One common mistake many students make is applying only after receiving university admission. Several scholarship deadlines close much earlier than university admissions. Preparing your documents in advance gives you enough time to apply for multiple funding opportunities without rushing through the process.
