History
The University of Georgia was established in 1785 by the Georgia General Assembly as the first-state chartered university in the US. Then, in 1872, UGA became a land-granting institute. The university closed in 1863 due to Civil War and re-opened in 1866. A new chancellor was appointed in 1899, Walter B. Hill who became the first UGA alumnus to lead the university. In 1937, student enrollment at the university reached 3,000 and almost 4,000 by 1941. In the year 2001, Georgia University inaugurated the College of Environment and Design and the School of Public Affairs and International Affairs.

The main university campus is situated in Athens, Georgia. and its different parts are designated as North Campus, South Campus, Central Campus, West Campus, and East Campus.
