Stony Brook University History
Found in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of Maths and Science, Stony Brook University is the flagship university of New York, and also claims to be the #1 public university in the region.
The insitute was first based on the grounds of a former Gold Coast estate, before a new campus was established near the village of Stony Brook, on a land donated by Ward Melville, a local philanthropist in 1962.

The university offers more than 200 majors, minors, and combined-degree programs. More than 350 companies recruit from its campus, and nearly 90% of its recent graduates are either employed or in graduate school.
With an acceptance rate of almost 48%, admissions at Stony Brook is selective. In order to have a good chance of being admitted, applicants must be at the top of their class and have an SAT score around 1600, or an ACT score of around 35. Apart from thisw, candidates also need to prove English language proficiency while applying to Stony Brook University (SUNY). Stony Brook University accepts IELTS score of 6.5 and TOEFL iBT score of 85 for admissions to graduate courses.
International students taking part in MBA programs at SBU must follow the basic eligibility criteria and submit the following documents mentioned below:
- A GPA of 3.0 in prior academic work is required for admission. students with lower than 3 GPA could be considered in exceptional cases for conditional admission to the College of Business. If admitted on conditional basis, students must achieve a 3.0 GPA in the first semester in order to continue the chosen study course.
- As an international student, students must demonstrate their English proficiency with minimum required scores. (IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 (with no sub-scores below 6), TOEFL internet-based: Overall score of 80)
- The admission committee looks for a minimum GMAT score of 550. However, applications are still reviewed for admission if the scores are less than required. The submission of the official copy of the GMAT score is mandatory for final processing of admission application.
Note: Candidates may apply for a GMAT waiver if they think they qualify for an exemption. All GMAT/GRE waivers will be considered on a case-by-case basis. An approved waiver request does not guarantee admission to the chosen course.
For International Applicants applying to the Computer Science Master's program, a certified GRE score is necessary. The GRE is not necessary for computer Science PhD candidates.
Stony Brook University (institution code: 2548) must get official GRE scores via ETS. Additionally, by the application deadline for Graduate Admissions Committee Review, Stony Brook University must receive the official GRE result if a GRE score was self-reported in the online application.
