A non-profit and private institution, Johnson and Wales University (JWU) was established in the year 1914 as a business school. It was founded by Mary T. Wales and Gertrude I. Johnson in Providence, Rhode Island. JWU is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) formerly NEASC. The state of Rhode Island had granted a charter in 1963 to JWU authorizing them to operate as an institution that can grant higher education degrees in business administration, secretarial sciences, accounting, and court reporting. The university was permitted to award graduate degree programs in 1985. And in 1988, the university had officially changed its name to Johnson and Wales University.
Currently, JWU has 2 campuses, one each in Providence and Charlotte. The Providence campus' 82,000-square-foot Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence highlights beatuiful views of Narragansett Bay. It is designed as the country's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified culinary lab. Whereas, the Charlotte campus includes 8 buildings on 13 acres in Uptown Charlotte.
JWU offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs through its different colleges. Johnson and Wales University colleges include College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering & Design, College of Food Innovation & Technology, College of Health & Wellness, College of Hospitality Management, and College of Professional Studies. JWU is the largest educator in the world in the culinary sector. JWU offers various degrees in areas like sports/entertainment/event management, fashion merchandising & retail management, management, criminal justice, entrepreneurship, equine studies/equine business management & riding, accounting, hotel & lodging management, and marketing.
Johnson & Wales University has an outstanding career outcome rate of 95.7% for Class of 2021. It is the percentage of graduates who were employed either part-time or full-time within 6 months of graduation.
