Mills College is a science and liberal arts education institution. It was established in 1852. Earlier, it was called the Young Ladies Seminary and was located in Benicia, California, later it was relocated to Oakland in 1871. The college offers undergraduate as well as graduate programs. Mills College was also the first college in the U.S to embrace an admission policy that welcomed transgender students for admission. The college offers more than 30 graduate, and certificate programs. It also offers 45 undergraduate programs (majors and minors). The college is approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and operates on a semester system, with optional summer and winter sessions.
The curriculum at Mills College is crafted to develop student's critical thinking, as well as communication and analytical skills. It also encourages creativity and creates a respect for social justice, inclusion and diversity. Several master's degree programs are included at Mills College, such as the master of public policy, management, applied economics, music, computer science, infant mental health, English language and literature, education, dance, creative writing, book art and studio art. The college also offers a joint MBA/MA in educational leadership and MPP/MBA. These degree programs train graduates to handle the ever-changing demands of the professional world with cross-sector competencies. They are taught the functioning of business enterprises, social enterprises, non-profit organizations (NGOs), and government agencies.
Doctoral programs in educational leadership and post-baccalaureate certificate courses in computer science and biochemistry are also offered by the college. Mills College aids in the preparation of single subject or multiple teaching credentials, state-issued credentials and administrative services credentials. Around 92% of graduates from Mills College either get engaged with good jobs or higher education programs.
Spreading across 135 acres, the college is considered one of the U.S.'s largest liberal arts campus. The virtues of Mills College are beyond its aesthetic lush greenery and eucalyptus-lined streams. The campus includes contemporary and traditional housing options for first-year undergraduate students. For co-curricular activities, there are many student clubs, such as Speech & Debate club, Poetry Club, Nerd Club, Mouthing Off Club, Math Club, Hip Hop Dance Club, Gender Splendor Club, Fencing Club, Feminist Democrats, and Earth CORPS.
