The college is spread over a sprawling 35 acres from Convent Avenue (130th to 141st Streets) in the city of Harlem in Manhattan. The architecture of the college was designed by the renowned architect Goerge B.Post in 1847. The building of the college has the landmark status for its great infrastructure and architect. A wealthy businessman founded the college to provide access to free higher education based on academic merits to the children of immigrants and the poor. It was founded on the lines of other similar institutions in Boston and Philadelphia. The City College of New York acceptance rate is around 64% making it moderately selective.
