The Board of Regents of University of Texas on July 11, 2007, renamed the College of Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin, to the Cockrell School of Engineering. The name was renamed to honor the late Ernest Cockrell Jr. of Houston who was a 1936 graduate of the university who did his bachelor and master degrees in petroleum engineering.
Ernest Cockrell Jr. died in 1972 and in 1974 Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall, a primary engineering building on the campus, was named in his memory.
Ben Streetman, former dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering, believed that this action by the Board of Regents was the right thing to do.
