Q:   Why is it named Cockrell School of Engineering?
A: 

The Board of Regents of University of Texas on July 11, 2007, renamed the College of Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin, to the Cockrell School of Engineering. The name was renamed to honor the late Ernest Cockrell Jr. of Houston who was a 1936 graduate of the university who did his bachelor and master degrees in petroleum engineering.

Ernest Cockrell Jr. died in 1972 and in 1974 Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall, a primary engineering building on the campus, was named in his memory. 

Ben Streetman, former dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering, believed that this action by the Board of Regents was the right thing to do. It honored Ernest Cockrell Jr. and the entire Cockrell family for a dream of what the school could become through a steady and generous application of private gifts.

Tips: Students should know that they might get a temporary culture shock but that will not unnecessarily be a bad thing as people here might come off as more blunt or transparent but they are also equally kind and helpful. Talk to your supervisors and interact in classrooms. Campus life is also very educative and you are bound to learn a lot. Public transportation is affordable and accessible throughout the day, Overall, I am satisfied with the course, college and the country.

Mixed opinion but it is a good place.
Tips: While the University of Texas has many strengths, my experience here has been mixed. I took a while to settle here and the orientation was brief and unhelpful at least according to me. Along with this, housing is an issue as the capacity to board students is limited and this causes a lot of issues.
