- BME knowledge and skills play important roles in modern healthcare - from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and from the proliferation of implantable medical devices (such as pacemakers and artificial hips) to more futuristic technologies (such as stem cell engineering and 3D printing of biological organs)
- Subdisciplines in BME include design and development of active and passive medical devices, orthopedic implants, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, tissue and stem cell engineering, and clinical engineering, just to name a few
- Students can choose to concentrate on three areas:
- Biomaterials- the study of how synthetic or natural materials are used in constructing artificial organs and tissues as well as how devices or prostheses interact with living tissue
