An international student whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold a degree representing completion of at least four years of study with above average/very good scholarship from a university or university-level institution.

Prerequisites :

For undergraduate work, we recommend 2 years of calculus (through differential equations and introduction to discreet structures), 1 year of physics (mechanics; Oscillations, Waves, Electric and Magnetic Fields); and a statistics course. Additional recommended coursework in Computer Science include: Operating Systems Principles, Computer Network Fundamentals, Computer Systems Architecture, Software Engineering, Programming Languages, Compiler Construction, Data Management Systems, Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, Intro to Computer Graphics, Intro to Algorithms and Complexity.

An applicant without a strong computer science background may be a very competitive applicant. Having professional experience as well as having taken courses that are equivalent to prerequisites for upper division undergraduate coursework, and the upper division courses themselves, would be most helpful.

Eye opening and new experiences.

Tips: I initially had great fun when I got here as the campus environment is very happening and welcoming. The cost of tuition and living is quite expensive here and I had to take out a loan. You can do some asking around and see if there are any good scholarship or financial aid options both from your home country as well as the US. Professors expect you to be interactive and classes tend to move at a flow. Group projects tend to get a bit frustrating for me personally.

Buzz filled campus vibe.

Tips: My first couple of months here were both overwhelming and chaotic as there is simply so much going on at all times on campus and the minute you get accustomed to your classes, the semester is over and you have to move on to the next. This university is much more expensive than other of its counterparts so better make the experience worth it if you plan on coming here. Involve yourself in research and projects as they look good later.

Tips: My first impression was that the campus is full of life and is filled with people from all over the world especially Indian students. The culture is vibrant, accepting yet competitive. Most on campus opportunities are research oriented or TA roles and the campus itself is quite safe at all hours. The cost of living especially rent can be quite high.

Tips: If you're eyeing a grad program at UCLA, you need a massive reality check before you board that flight to LA. You have to be ready to study like crazy, network constantly at every single opportunity, and dive deep into actual research. But here is the bitter truth: do not even bother doing an MS here if you aren’t already exceptionally good at something specific in your field. The US job market does not care about your degree alone, and employment is absolutely not guaranteed. There is zero spoon-feeding and no campus placement system like back home. If you don't have the grit to hunt down a job entirely on your own in India without relying on your parents' connections or university placement cells, you are going to struggle heavily out here. Do not make the move unless you're fully prepared to hustle for every single break.
