Founded in 1843, Nottingham Trent University is a public research university in Nottingham, England. History
The origin of NTU UK goes back to 1843 when the Nottingham Government School of Design opened its doors. In 1934, Nottingham Government School of Design was renamed as the College of Art. Then in 1945, the Nottingham and District Technical College was established. Then, in 1959, the Nottingham College of Education (Clifton) opened. Plans were made to merge Nottingham and District Technical College with the College of Arts and Crafts in 1965. Then, in 1971, Trent Polytechnic was inaugurated. Trent was one of the polytechnics to be approved. In 1974, Trent Polytechnic merged with the Nottingham College of Education in Clifton. Trent Polytechnic was renamed and rebranded as Nottingham Polytechnic in 1989. It soon started to become the most popular polytechnic in the country, receiving more applications than most universities in the UK. In 1991, the Government announced that polytechnics could now apply for university status. Finally, in 1992, Nottingham Trent University was finally chartered. Professor Ray Cowell was appointed as the university’s first vice-chancellor. Furthermore, in 2017, Nottingham Trent University won the award for the ‘UK University of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education Awards.
