Royal Holloway London History
Royal Holloway University of London came into existence in 1985, through the merger of two institutions - Bedford College and Royal Holloway College. In the year 1849, Bedford College first opened its doors with the help of Elizabeth Jesser Reid. It was Reid's childhood dream to build a college specifically for females, and this made Bedford College enjoy the status of being the first women’s higher education college in Britain. Whereas, the Royal Holloway College was founded in the year 1886 by the Victorian entrepreneur Thomas Holloway. Jane Pearce Driver, Holloway's wife suggested the idea of building a college to educate women.
