In 1890, the university was founded as the Woolwich Polytechnic, which was the second polytechnic university in the United Kingdom. In 1882, the university was awarded the first CGLI certificate. Then in 1935, the university introduced the first sandwich courses in the United Kingdom with the Ministry of War.
