NJIT History
The New Jersey Institute of Technology first opened its doors in 1881, as Newark Technical School, to meet the growing need for skilled labourers in the city. A group of industrialists, led by Edward Weston, a former rival of Thomas Edison's, helped establish what now stands as one of the best institutions in the USA, offering over 120 degrees across the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels of study.
The institute initially laid a major emphasis on Engineering and Architecture, before expanding the scope of its education. It played a crucial role in the United States's efforts during the two world wars, contributing to military training and research and development of new technology. In 1930, it was renamed to Newark College of Engineering, before taking up its present-day name in 1973.
