Northern Arizona University was established in 1899 and is one of the oldest universities in the United States. NAU was started with only one professor, 23 students, and two copies of Webster's International Dictionary bound in sheepskin. Four women, selected from among the students they recruited, comprised the inaugural class of 1901 and were granted lifetime teaching credentials for the Arizona Territory.
