Princeton University History
Princeton University first opened its doors as the College of New Jersey in 1746 in Elizabeth, before shifting base to Newark and finally to Princeton, holding its initial name for 150 years before taking on its present-day name in 1896. The Graduate School was opened in 1900.
The college emerged from a split within the Presbyterian Church as the New Light Presbyterians sought an alternative to existing institutions like Harvard and Yale. Presidents Jonathan Dickinson and Aaron Burr Sr. played a key role in designing the curriculum to be taught and in enrolling students.
Princeton went completely co-ed in 1969 and today houses more than 9,000 students from over 65 countries, providing a quality academic and research environment.
