History
It first opened its doors as the College of New Jersey in Elizabeth, before shifting to Newark and finally to Princeton, holding its initial name for 150 years before taking on its present-day name in 1896. The Graduate School was opened in 1900.
The college began from a split within the Presbyterian Church as the New Light Presbyterians sought an alternative to existing institutions like Harvard and Yale. Presidents Jonathan Dickinson and Aaron Burr Sr. played a key role in designing the curriculum to be taught and in enrolling students.
