Deakin University History
Deakin University was first founded in 1974 by the passage of the Deakin University Act 1974. The university was known to be Victoria's fourth university and was also the first one to be established in the regional Victoria area. The first campus of Deakin University was founded and established at the Waurn Ponds area of Australia. The first set of students had joined the campus in 1977. Later in 1988, the Deakin education reforms had announced to merge the university with the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education.
The university is known to be a result of a merger between State College of Victoria and the higher education courses of the Gordon Institute of Technology. The Burwood campus of Deakin University is located on the site of Burwood Teachers’ College. This college has conducted 2-year training courses for Primary School teachers and 3-year courses for Infant Teachers. The former Toorak campus of the university is located in Maivern and the courses as well as resources were relocated to the Melbourne Burwood campus. The main building of Deakin University was located on the site of the 116-year old Stonnington Mansion.
