History
Macquarie University was established in 1964. The campus is set on 126 hectares. The university was named for Lachlan Macquarie, former Governor of New South Wales. The university was first opened to students in 1967. In 1990, the university absorbed the Institute of Early Childhood Studies of the Sydney College of Advanced Education under the terms of the Higher Education Act 1989. This name was set to recognize the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the university is located, the Wallumattagal clan of the Dharug nation.
