Foreign Medical Graduate Examination is a mandatory licensing exam for Indian students and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). Students who have completed their medical degree abroad and want to practice medicine in India. The NBEMS will release FMGE 2026 June Session soon.

FMGE Exam

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), popularly known as the MCI Screening Test. It is a mandatory licensure exam for Indian students who have pursued their MBBS abroad. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) conducts this FMGE exam twice a year (June and December). Passing this exam is the only gateway for foreign medical graduates to register with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and practice medicine in India.

Dates for FMGE exam for the June 2026 session are yet to be announced. NBEMS recently released tentative dates for FMGE December 2026. It is expected to be conducted on 09 January 2027. FMGE exam June 2026 is expected to be scheduled in the 4th week of June 2026. The result will be available in August 2026. 

Who is Exempt? Not every student pursuing MBBS abroad needs to take this test. As per current regulations, if you have completed their MBBS in Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America, or New Zealand, you are not required to appear for their FMGE exam.

What is FMGE Exam 2026?

FMGE stands for Foreign Medical Graduate Examination. It is a medical licensing test in India. It is a standardized exam for those students who have completed their MBBS abroad. The National Board of Examinations conducts the FMGE exam twice a year. If you want to practice in India, it is mandatory to appear in the exam.

FMGE exam eligibility requires candidates to have an MBBS degree abroad. Only eligible candidates need to register and pay the FMGE exam fees as part of the application process.

National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences has officially released the schedule for FMGE June 2026 session. This is an update for students who chose best countries to study MBBS abroad and now want to practice in India. Candidates intending to appear for this test must strictly follow these timelines. Below is the finalized calendar for the application window, correction facilities, admit card issuance, and the examination day.

FMGE Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who are citizens of India or Overseas Citizens of India and have MBBS degree can appear for the exam. Here are point-wise FMGE exam eligibility criteria:

  • Citizenship: Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.
  • Degree Equivalence: Your medical qualification must be equal to an MBBS degree in the country where you completed.
  • Degree Completion: You must have finished your MBBS degree before taking the FMGE exam.
  • Result Timing: The final exam results for your medical degree should be out on or before the cut-off date for the FMGE session.

Candidates who will fulfill all these FMGE eligibility requirements are permitted to fill out the FMGE exam application.

FMGE Exam 2026 Application Process

Candidates who qualify for the above-mentioned eligibility criteria are required to register for the FMGE. Here is the step-by-step process to complete the FMGE exam registration form.

  • Visit the website of the NBEMS
  • There you will find the "FMGE Exam" in the Examination section.
  • You will find an active link for the FMGE June/December session exam.
  • Follow the instructions mentioned on-screen and fill in the information asked there.
  • Cross-verify the details before submission.
  • At last, pay the FMGE exam application fee by using a credit or debit card. 

Note: It is also mandatory to qualify for the final exam for the Primary Medical Qualification, i.e., MBBS or Equivalent degree, on/before the given date.

Candidates who want to appear for the FMGE exam must pay a non-refundable application fee. The total FMGE registration fee is INR 6,195 (including GST). The fee includes the exam fee and GST charges. The fee must be paid online only. No other payment mode is accepted.

Candidates can pay the FMGE exam fee online through the official application portal. Follow the steps below:

  • Fill the FMGE application form
  • Proceed to the payment section
  • Pay the fee using online payment methods
  • Download the payment confirmation receipt

FMGE is not among the toughest exams in the world. But, you need to prepare well for this exam. The syllabus covers all 19 subjects taught during the MBBS course. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) conducts the FMGE across a vast network of cities to ensure accessibility for candidates nationwide. FMGE Exam Pattern 2026

Conducted by NBE, the FMGE is an online examination. Candidates face 300 MCQs. It is divided into two sections. The question paper will be in the English language only. Here is an overview of FMGE pattern:

  • Exam Mode: Online or computer based test
  • Number of Questions: 300 MCQs divided in two parts
  • Time Duration: You get 150 minutes for each part
  • Break: There is a short break between the two parts
  • Passing Criteria: You need at least 50% marks to pass the exam

FMGE 2026 Results

The National Board of Examinations will release the FMGE June Results 2026 session in August 2026. Candidates who have the credentials, like roll number, name, and Email ID, can download their scorecard. However, the FMGE results 2026 PDF will be easily available on the official website of NBE.

In the official announcement by NBE, the roll number of candidates, qualifying status (Pass/Fail), and score obtained out of 300 are mentioned. All the successful aspirants can get the  FMGE certificate from the National Medical Commission.

FMGE Exam Day Guidelines

Students who want to appear for the FMGE exam must strictly follow all guidelines:

  • Admit Card: Download and carry your FMGE admit card. No canadidates can enter FMGE exam centre without the admit card will not be allowed to enter the FMGE exam centre.
  • Photo ID Card: Bring a valid, original photo ID proof along with your admit card.
  • Reporting Time: Candidates should reach their exam centre well.
  • Strict Checking: Identity checks will be carried out at the exam venue gate.

What Happens If You Fail the FMGE?

Failing the FMGE means you cannot obtain registration from a State Medical Council or practice medicine in India. However, it is not the end of your career. Students who plan their medical journey carefully, such as those exploring options like MBBS in Japan, can reduce such risks by choosing globally recognised programs. Here is a practical breakdown of your next steps:

  • Unlimited Attempts: There is no limit on the number of attempts. You can reappear in the next session (usually June or December).
  • No Internship Without FMGE: You must pass FMGE to become eligible for an internship and registration in India.
  • Analyze Your Scorecard: Review subject-wise marks. Identify weak areas for improvement.
  • Wait for the Next Cycle: You need to apply again for the next exam window.

Q:   Can a candidate study in India if he has not cleared his FMGE exam?
A: 

FMGE exam is a medical licensing exam. If the candidate has completed his undergraduate medical studies from abroad and wants to study further in India, he must qualify for the FMGE examination. However, candidates with an undergraduate medical degree from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States of America or the United Kingdom, are exempted from FMGE.

Q:   Is Russian MBBS degree valid in India?
A: 

Yes, an MBBS degree from a Russian medical college is valid and accepted in India. MCI/NMC and WHO recognize Medical Universities in Russia to provide students with a globally accepted degree.

Q:   Is there a limit on the number of attempts for the FMGE?
A: 

There is currently no limit on total number of attempts for FMGE. You can appear for as many sessions as needed. Very soon, National Exit Test (NExT) will replace FMGE exam. It may introduce new regulations regarding attempt limits once implemented. As of now, no limit for re-attempts.

Hello Mir. If you are not able to qualify for the NEET exam You will not be able to practice in India. Thus appearing for the FMGE exam - which qualifies you to practice in India stands null and void.

Hello Swetha. No, she will not be allowed to practice in India. If she has studied MBBS in UK or USA she might be exempted from the FMGE exam. However, qualifying for the NEET is essential to be able to practice in India.
