The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The institute is a polytechnic institute established in 1916. History
The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology was established in 1916 in Inglewood’s Colonel Walker School adjacent to the police and police station and was initially known as the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA). The Institute primarily started with courses in metalworking and motor mechanics. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology began with just 11 students, six veterans, and five civilians. Soon the institute witnessed an increase in the number of students and introduced morning and evening classes. Even though the Institute was established in 1916, the provincial government granted permission to open Calgary College however, the institute was privately funded and was now allowed to grant legal degrees. Due to the inability to grant degrees and the First World, Calgary College closed. Later, in 1916 the Institute opened its doors again as the soldiers returned to Canada in crucial need of vocational training.
The institute’s campus was temporarily seized in 1918 after the Influenza Epidemic outbreak. In 1920 The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology welcomed the civilian students back again. With the near end of the depression, the institute welcomed more students and revived the evening classes offered by the institute. Over the years, The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology continued to expand and introduce more programs and secured multiple achievements with time. In 2016, The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology entered its second century with an enrollment of over 50,000 students and 220,000 alumni, along with 84 programs, 37 apprenticeship programs, and many more.
