The University of Western Ontario (UWO) is a public research university located in London, Ontario, Canada. In 2012, it was corporately branded as Western University and generally shortened to Western. Initially, the university began operations with four faculties Arts, Divinity, Law, and Medicine. Later in the post-World War II era, the university grew substantially, and several faculties and schools were added. Currently, the university operates twelve academic faculties and schools with more than 35,000 students and over 325,000 alumni in 150 countries worldwide.

What all courses are available to international students?

 

Western University offers more than 400 different specializations, majors, and minors at the undergraduate level. Students can choose from 17 different undergraduate degrees, three different degree types—Honors Bachelor, four-year Bachelor, three-year Bachelor, which also includes Honors Specializations, Specializations, Majors, and Minor modules.

Programs at the university are flexible and modular in nature. Because of the program's modular structure, students can broaden their area of study by combining programs from different faculties, schools, and departments in many cases. Western offers a wide range of combined and concurrent degrees such as Engineering and Business, Kinesiology and Foods and Nutrition, Media Information and Technoculture, and Law, among others.

What are the eligibility requirements?

 

Highlighted below are the minimum admission requirements for international students applying to the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postdoctoral programs at Western University. Interested students should visit program-specific websites as each graduate program may have specific admission requirements.

 

Undergraduate Programs

Applicants aspiring for admission to Western University on the basis of the senior secondary matriculation from India must submit the following:

Results of Grade XII submitted via one of the following:

• CBSE: All India Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (AISSSCE); or
• CISCE - Indian School Certificate (ISC); or
• State Boards – Intermediate / Pre-University / Higher Secondary / Senior Secondary School Certificate

Applicants may be considered for conditional admission based on mid-year/mid-term results. Grade X results must be provided as an academic record.

Note: The appropriate examinations board must issue the results. Photocopies are acceptable if it is certified by the school principal, head, counselor, or the appropriate examination board. Notarized copies are not acceptable.

Master Programs

• Applicants must possess a four-year degree from a university, college, or institute. 
• Applicant must have an average score of at least 70% in any course taken in the last two full-time years of the undergraduate degree
• Equivalent qualifications will be considered based on the standards of the discipline or profession

Doctoral Programs

• Applicants must possess a master’s degree or equivalent from a university, college, or institute, and provide evidence of research potential
• A minimum score of at least a 70% average in the master’s degree is required for application 

English Language Proficiency

International applicants whose first language is not English must furnish evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language within the last two years.  

Note: Programs at Western may require a higher minimum score than those listed above.

 

 

What all documents are needed for application?

 

The requirement of documents varies with each program at Western. However, there are a few common documents that all applicants are required to submit during the application:

Application & Tuition Fees

 

Is there any application fees?

 

Yes, for international students falling under full-time undergraduate applicants (Form 105) must pay CAD 156.00. Additionally, they are also required to pay an evaluation fee of CAD 93.50 to the OUAC along with an additional CAD 10 as an International Service fee.

 

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

Scholarships & Financial Aid

 

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

 

Western offers multiple scholarships to international students based on merit and needs. The following are the different scholarships and awards programs available to international applicants.

 UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS

 International President’s Entrance Scholarships

There are three scholarships worth $50,000 each that are available to exceptional international students as a part of the National Scholarship Program. Based on outstanding academic performance, creative and innovative thought, and significant achievement in extracurricular activities students are awarded this scholarship. To avail the scholarship, students must complete a National Scholarship application, which includes an essay and a nomination from their school.

 Virginia Harris International Admission Scholarships

Two first-year full-time students in any program with the highest admission averages and who have not already received an admission scholarship are awarded this scholarship. The Office of the Registrar selects two recipients for this scholarship worth $5,500 each.

Dr. Amit Chakma International Scholarship

An annual scholarship of $2,500 is offered to a full-time international undergraduate student entering the first year of any program in any stream. The selection is done based on high academic achievement (minimum 90 percent average). During admissions, the Office of the Registrar will automatically offer the scholarship to the selected student.

 GRADUATE AWARDS

Funding from the Society of Graduate Students (SOGS)

This is a need-based financial assistance scholarship for graduate students offered by the Society of Graduate Students (SOGS) through a variety of programs. SOGS offers students with the below-mentioned assistance:

Funding from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS)

Funding from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) is an amalgamation of multiple funds where students are awarded upon entry into a program. Some are based upon recommendations from the program, and others are where students must apply either to Western University or to an external funding agency.

Graduate Teaching Assistants and Postdocs Union: PSAC Local 610

The PSAC Local 610 is a financial assistance award offered to full-time graduate students who are Teaching Assistants (TA) and have worked as a TA within the last eight months.

 

Admission Process

 

When do the admissions start? 

 

There are specific deadlines for each graduate program for both domestic and international students. Students should visit the university website and review their program(s) to ensure the specific deadline for submission. Remember to apply and complete all admission requirements within the stated application deadline, including all transcripts and other program admission requirements.

How to apply to UG courses?

 

The application process for all applicants will differ depending on their previous or current educational background. It will also depend on whether the applicant wishes to study on a full-time or part-time basis.

Indian international applicants have to apply using 105 Application Form. Applicants can check if they fall under the vicinity of 105 Form or not by checking the criteria mentioned below:

Do you meet any of the following requirements?

• You currently reside in Canada [Canadian citizens, permanent residents (landed immigrants) or those currently studying in Canada on a study permit or other visa], or are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident (landed immigrant) living elsewhere (not in Canada), and you are not currently attending an Ontario high school day program.
• You currently reside outside of Canada, are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) and are not currently attending an Ontario high school day program (in Ontario or abroad).

Step 1: All international students falling under 105 Application must apply from OUAC website. Login to the website and you will land on the application page. Here you can either login or create an account.

 

 

Step 2: After creating an account, you will be provided with a Username and Password. With the information, you have to login and provide all the necessary information required. Once you log in, you will have to complete the following sections:

Personal Information: Here you have to provide information related to your Name, Status, and Language of Correspondence.

 

Step 3: Contact Information: Here you have to provide all your contact details like—Email Address, Contact Number, and Residential Address.

Step 4: Academic Background: Here you have to provide your information related to your school and college programs along with other additional educational qualifications like Diploma and so on.

Step 5: Browse Programs: Here you need to provide information related to your preferred program at multiple universities including Western University.

 

Step 6: Program Choice: In this section you need to mention the program choice you made in any university including the program you chose at Western University.

 

Step 7: Document Upload: Here you must upload the required document to apply at Western University such as Proof of Status in Canada.

Step 8: Additional University Information: This section is for candidates who have already used OUAP portal for applying to any other university or Western University prior to this application. Information related to when they applied to the said university must be provided here.

 

Step 9: Other Academic Information: Here you must provide information related to English Language and so on.

 

Step 10: Transcripts: Here provide the information related to Transcripts. Information about arranging the transcripts as well as submission to WES must be provided here.

Step 11: Activities/Employment: You need to provide a list of all the Extracurricular Activities, Professional Experiences, and Internships while attending post-secondary education.

 

Step 12: Review and Submit: This is the section where you have to review everything that you have provided and finally submit the application.

 

How to apply to PG courses?

 

At Western University, students must have a four-year degree from an accredited university if they want to pursue a postgraduate degree. Also, the minimum requirement set by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is 70% average across courses in the undergraduate degree.

All supporting documents should be in digital format and while submitting it should be done in a PDF file with a size that is less than 3,000kb (3MB).

Official Academic Transcript

Students are requested to submit one official academic transcript from each post-secondary institution that a student has attended.

 

References

For reference, Western’s Digital Gradate Reference Process Western will send email to selected referees that students provide during their application. The mail will be sent within two hours of updating the reference information in the application. For the process, a unique link will be emailed to each referee, which will allow them to log in to a secure site and submit an online reference. Students will be notified after each referee replies to the university’s request.

 

Supplemental Questions:

At Western, some graduate programs may require students to answer unique questions that reflect elements of the program they are applying to. The responses that students provide are later made available to the program during the assessment process.

Additional Documents:

Several programs require additional documentation to support the application such as samples of written work, a list of publications, a resume, and many more. Students are requested to review the program(s) website to learn if any such requirements exist.

Note: No application will be considered until it is complete and submitted. The responsibility rests with the students to ensure that all required documents such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, test results such as  IELTS, TOEFL scores, GRE scores are submitted.

 Proficiency in English Scores:

International students are requested to send their Proficiency in English scores, such as IELTS, TOEFL electronically to Western.

 

Application Fee Payment

To complete the application, application fees must be submitted. Western accepts two methods of payment to process application:

·               Credit card (Visa/MasterCard)

·                Cheque/Money Order (this must be a money order or bank draft issued from a Canadian Banking Institution. Personal cheques will not be accepted.)

 

After completing the payment and submitting the application students will receive an email with their new Western Student Identity.

Activating Your Western Student Identity:

For new applicants who do not hold a current Western Student Identity, a Western Access Code will allow them to activate their Western identity.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?

 

Preliminary Assessment
Applicants will receive an automated email confirming receipt of the completed application after the Western receives a complete application from the applicant along with the payment. The preliminary assessment is conducted by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to calculate an admission average and establish an academic degree based on the potential of the candidate. After completing the preliminary assessment phase of the application, a confirmation email will be sent to the applicant by the university.

Review
The duration of the application review process can take as long as four months. However, each program at the university website provides the expected timeline for the application review process.

The International Student Work Opportunities Program (ISWOP) is a work-study program designed for international undergraduate (main campus degree) students. It is a part-time paid employment opportunity for the students to acquire financial assistance on the campus. This program allows international undergraduate students to gain and enhance skills while obtaining work experience and engage with the campus community. How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

 

Western University is affiliated with three university colleges. The first one is Brescia University College, the only all-women's Catholic-based university college in Canada. Second is the Huron University College, founded in 1863, located adjacent to Western's central campus. Finally, the third is the King's University College, a Catholic-based liberal arts college.
Western University is in the city of London, Ontario, in the southwestern end of the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. The university’s central administrative unit of graduate education is School Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, but it is not considered its own faculty or academic school. Is on-campus housing available?

 

Western University is home to students from more than 121 different countries, and its residences offer academic support and excellent amenities. For an international or exchange student, the university campus is the best place to live during the course.

Residence
A residence is guaranteed for all incoming International first-year students from high school with an offer to study full time at Western’s Main Campus. Additionally, upper-year students can also apply to live in residence in any building. Most students living in residence are first-year undergraduate students ranging from 17-19 years of age.
Note: Students pursuing their degrees at affiliated colleges, including Brescia, Huron, or King's are not eligible for residence at Western's main campus.

Cost and Payment

Residence Room Rates: University provides a rate chart where the room rates and meal plan costs are bifurcated for students to understand the cost involved. The housing office should be informed about the prepayment to accept the residence offer before the deadline indicated in the Residence Offer letter. Students must pay the first instalment payment before the deadline to secure the residence spot.
Students can also arrange a flexible payment plan, by writing an email to the Student Center finance team.
