Who Needs a Chinese Study Visa?

Any foreign national intending to study, pursue advanced studies, or conduct fieldwork in mainland China for any duration requires a Chinese Student Visa (X visa). This applies to students enrolled in authorised academic, language or exchange programs with the X1 Visa, granting permission to study for courses longer than 6 months and X2 for less than 6 months. Basically, Indian students wanting to study a bachelor's degree or a master's degree or a research based course will be required to get a Chinese Study Visa X1.

Types of Chinese Student Visa

There are three types of student visa for China from India. One is meant for study tour, another one for long term study plans exceeding 180 days and the last one is for the short term study period lesser than 180 days.

Chinese Study Visa Requirements 

Indian students aspiring to study in China must get the below-mentioned documents ready at the time of applying for the Chinese Student Visa. 

  1. Passport: First and most important document you must present at the time of applying to the Chinese study visa is your passport. Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity left at the time of application and it should also have at least 2 blank pages. If you have passport from the nationality of other countries as well, you need to present that original passport or your government issued ID as well.
  2. White background photo: Take a clear, recently taken standard photo with a white background with you when you visit the visa centre for filling out your Chinese study visa application form. You get three chances for uploading your photo. The dimensions of photo should be “33x48 mm”.
  3. Fill out and take a print out of your visa application form and then sign it before submission. 
  4. Proof of employment, residence or student status via means of original valid certificates. 
  5. If you’ve ever had a Chinese visa before, then you must provide all of them including the passport - whether current or previous one - but the one having details of your previous Chinese Visa(s).
  6. Indian applicants who are under 18 years of age need to provide the following set of documents-
    1. A consent form showing agreement of both your parents with their signatures
    2. Valid ID of both parents or the copy of information pages of their passports
    3. Your birth certificate - including details of your parents too. The certificate should be either in English or Chinese
    4. If yours is a single parent, then associated official documents and personal statement from the parent must be provided

In addition, you must also attach some required supporting documents when applying for a Chinese student visa. The required supporting documents are - 

  1. Admission offer letter from the Chinese university/college/institute
  2. The “Confirmation Form for Study in China” - issued buy the relevant Chinese authorities. These are forms JW201 and JW202.

Note:- You must visit the Chinese Visa Centre, the Chinese Embassy or the Consulate General in your country all by yourself as the authorities might collect your ten fingerprints at the time of your visit. If required, the consular officer may ask you for additional supporting documents outside the list given above. 

It is upon the consular officer to decide whether to grant you a visa depending on your conditions and application. The officer has the complete rights to decide the validity, duration and the number of entries on your visa.







Chinese Study Visa Cost for Indians in 2026

The Chinese student visa fee is to be deposited at the Chinese Embassy. Indian students must note that they will also have to deposit an “Application Service Fee”. So, the total amount to be deposited at the Chinese Embassy in India would be a sum of the visa fee and the application service fee (non-refundable). The amount equivalent to the China Student Visa cost must be paid either in cash or demand draft (DD) to the Chinese Embassy in India.

What to do Upon Landing in China?

There are some mandatory steps that you need to take first thing upon entering China as a foreign student. These are-

  1. The first and most important thing that you have to do within 30 days of entering China is to apply for a residence permit from the immigration department of the local public security authority in place. 
  2. Convey your details like your name, contact info, the course you’re studying, the university you have been admitted to and the duration of your intended stay to the Consular Officer at the Indian Embassy/Consulates in China via means of a letter or an email. 
  3. Check on campus banks and the services they offer before opening an account. It’s safe to store extra cash in bank rather than at your home. 
  4. Use phone cards/VOIP to be able to make international phone calls. 
  5. Stay in touch with university authorities and report all complaints to the respective authorities, as and when needed. 
  6. Update/renew your visa on time
