Beautiful and diverse campus.
Tips: I have always wanted to spend time in Italy and by doing my Masters here I got to experience the beauty of this place. People are friendly and welcoming but you'll have to be careful of pickpockets in the touristy areas. Job prospects are in a select few industries and the language barrier can cause problems at times.

A welcoming environment and great, understanding faculty.
Tips: I did not really know what to expect initially but I was pleasantly surprised as I found my university to be accommodating, especially in my field of study. It is located close to the city centre which is known as the centre- the square where all the happening spots are. The internships available are very limited and in my case, my programme is very niche hence there are limited opportunities in general. The college doesn't offer internship opportunities so you are on your own on this one and language becomes another barrier. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the experience here.

Master in International Cooperation on Human Rights and Intercultural Heritage - Batch of 2023

The university is decent but limited internship opportunities.
Tips: I think I have been quite satisfied with everything I learned and all the people I got to know during my time at the university. My only advice would be to keep an open mind and be flexible with whatever opportunity that comes your way. Learn Italian to communicate with the locals and it will also enhance your ability to get a job if you speak fluent Italian. Overall, I am satisfied with my experiences.
Dislikes (Internships): There are hardly any available opportunities for internships as Bologna is not very well connected as compared to other cities. There is more priority given to locals and the linguistic barrier becomes an added challenge, especially as an international student.

Tips: I got to meet and interact with people from all over the world and that contributed to broadening my horizons and personality as well. Moreover, exploring Italy has been truly marvellous. If you decide to come here then make sure you realise that it is fundamentally different from cities like Milan and you'll need to understand basic Italian. Tips: Students should know that the college is historic and it will really bring out the creative side of you even if you feel you do not have one. Fun and learning in an open environment
Tips: I have finalised my transition, by joining university activities and university extra activities. But it takes time and patience. There are some lonely times. I didn't avail of any scholarships. I was quite satisfied with my university, course and country.
Likes (Public transportation): It is well organised and it connects almost all the campuses. There is an intermodal type of transportation. Public transportation is affordable and there are conventions with the subscription for students with a low ISEE (in proportion to your income).
Dislikes (Part time work): The availability of on-campus part-time jobs is not popular. I cannot recall any off-campus opportunities. It is not that easy to manage the part-time work along with the academics because there are work and university hours overlapping.

Growing, learning, and finding my place.
Tips: Students should know that the college is academically strong and the workload can get intense, so time management really matters. When I first came here, the transition was smooth but there was definitely a cultural shift. People are very independent, straightforward, and everyone minds their own space. It took me a bit to adjust but eventually I learned to handle things on my own and became more confident. I didn't get any scholarships personally, though the university does offer options depending on your profile. I'm quite satisfied with my university, my course, and the country. The environment feels safe, the teaching quality is good, and the course matches what I wanted for my career.
Dislikes (Part time work): The student life here is genuinely enjoyable and balanced. My days usually start with classes followed by group study sessions, small campus hangout or grabbing coffee with friends. What I enjoy the most is how lively yet peaceful the campus feels. The college regularly organizes cultural events, academic talks, sports days, and small community meetups. I don't attend everything, but I join the ones that interest me. There are also many student clubs, cultural clubs, research groups, sports teams international student communities so it's easy to find something you vibe with and feel included.

The Masters program experience at the University of Bonn was great.
Tips: Going abroad really made me more independent and I got better at work. The academics were awesome. Since it was a research-focused course with lots of options it helped me get the skills I needed in my field. The city and people were super welcoming and friendly.
Likes (Part time work): I have been working as a student assistant in one of the working groups at my University. As per my knowledge the minimum wage now is nearly 14 euros per hour, in institutes. It depends on the available vacancy and definitely the professor's impression of you, whether you manage to get it or not. The work was really flexible. I have no personal experience regarding off-campus part-time jobs. However, I have heard that knowing the language probably the A2 level is really important in fetching them.
Dislikes (Indian Food): The Indian restaurants are not as authentic as how they are in India. In addition, food is really costly with a minimum of 12 euros. You can find Korean, Pakistani and Arabic Restaurants too apart from German. I prefer cooking by myself. However if it is difficult due to the curriculum, I would opt for the University canteen which is amazing.

New beginnings and beautiful rewards.
Tips: It can be stressful at the start but that's all, since it's new and you'll have to adjust. You might notice a lot of new cultures, behaviour and ways of living but it's all worth the experience. With time everything settles and you'll start enjoying the beauty, calm and company you form along the way.
Likes (Safety): It's pretty safe no matter where you are in the city and on campus. Apart from regular campus security, there are well lit walkways, safe during the evening too, emergency contact points and a quick response safety team that's always available. Walking back home alone has always felt comfortable.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The public transportation here is very manageable but not exceptional. The campus is connected to the main parts of the city through buses and trams but the frequency can be inconsistent at certain times and mostly on the weekends. The system is safe delays could be expected at any time of the day.

Challenges, changes, and growth in Germany.
Tips: There will definitely be cultural shocks, including civic sense, food ethics, traffic rules, language barriers, night life, time management, independence, individualistic life choices, personal space and code of conduct. Rules to abide by, waste management. One has to be strong, confident, and ready to accept to lot of new changes in the structure of their life to be able to live a happy life in Germany. But there is a lot to learn and in the long run it gives a better shape to your personal as well as professional life. I didn't avail any scholarship. It required me to have a certain level of German proficiency. The level of my university is good, so it pushes me to put more effort. In that sense, I am happy with my experience.
Likes (Indian Food): There are plenty of options available around which include both South and North Indian cuisines. There are many Indian stores from where you can buy Indian groceries and cook them at home. So you get both options of cooking at home as well as eating out.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Post study job situation has plummeted after the economic recession hit Germany. I do not have any exact figure of how many companies sponsor visas and the salary packages vary a lot, city to city and company to company, according to your domain but overall the market has definitely tightened.

Very amazing faculty and student life.
Tips: Be prepared to be as active and involved as much as you can; these things make learning easier. There are no doubt cultural shifts, which are natural, but I guess one should take all of this in a positive aspect, and try to be as involved as possible to enjoy to the fullest. They have a BCGS scholarship programme, so you can apply for that.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): International student hub, diverse culture, social activities, events. It would be good to have some conversational knowledge of German beforehand to fully indulge in college life and events. A student gym, wellness activities are there and events in the Student dorms are also there.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): Very friendly and adjusting faculty. Ready to help, separate office hours. Each course also has separate tutors, so students can easily clarify their doubts. A good experience, but students should remember that they put in their effort as much as possible.

Great opportunity with low tuition fees. Plan your courses and thesis.
Tips: Had the opportunity to experience various cultures. Staying in a different country by ourselves is tough, and it took me time to get used to the climate. I am, in general, very satisfied with the courses and the country. Learning the German language can be very beneficial, but the university does not offer enough places in its German course.
Likes (Public transportation): The city of Bonn is, in general, well connected, with trams and buses. The student ID gives access to public transport. But I heard that it has gotten harder to find accommodation, and people are finding it in remote areas of Bonn. This makes it tricky to travel to campus every day.
Dislikes (Internships): At least, when I studied, the Physics department was conservative in its practices. It was not easy to convince the department and finish related paperwork for an internship/thesis outside the university. Finding an internship depends on our planning. Germany offers internship opportunities in various subfields of Physics.

A warehouse of experiences and learnings.
Tips: The modules are designed in a way that gives you flexibility, so choosing the modules is crucial. Choosing a path before joining is also important, so you want to go on academia or go into industry. That will shape your modules. Knowing the fact that 1st semester is difficult for everyone. So, working very hard in the first sem will be very beneficial. Start searching for jobs in the second semester. 1st semester is to settle here, get to know things. Coming to Europe has its perks, like a good lifestyle or travelling through countries but the 1st priority should be studies. Bonn has taught me a lot. Being responsible is one of them. Through modules and projects, I have shaped myself in the financial industry.
Likes (Student Life): Student life here is a good package of international exposure, studies and experiences. Through living in dorms, we get to have various experiences by cooking together, making new friends, celebrating festivals and also studying together. University life is a good mix of local and other nationalities. Particularly, for Bonn, the faculty is very good, and the modules are well articulated with many options in electives.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Being a vegetarian, there are limited options in Indian food as well. It's always better to cook for ourselves as the restaurant doesn't have the value of money and taste, also not as expected. The restaurants are expensive for a student's budget. However, eating out once a week is totally okay.

The courses are difficult yet rewarding.
Tips: Courses are difficult, so be prepared for difficult assignments and a lot of hard work. Since we come from a different background, it is challenging to get accustomed to the education system here. Especially the compulsory subjects are difficult, so be ready to spend a lot of hours studying. That being said, the course is very rewarding and you get good internships or a teaching assistantship as a part time job.
Likes (Public transportation): The public transportation fee is included in the student semester fees (twice a year). So you don't need to pay extra for public transportation. Public transport is very well connected in the entire Germany and the app works fine too. Available modes are bus, tram and underground trains.
Dislikes (Indian Food): As a vegetarian, it is challenging to find options in Germany in general. There are indian stores and restaurant but finding authentic restaurants is a challenge. However, you can find all ingredients if you are comfortable cooking. I do like eating outside but limited, mostly cooking is the best option.

On-campus university jobs are rare.
Tips: The academic jump between India and Germany was huge, in terms of the syllabus, assignments and methods of teaching. This was hard in the beginning. The cultural shift was interesting too, but Bonn is a student city with people all over the world, so it wasn't hard to get used to. I am extremely satisfied with the university, city and country.
Likes (Student Life): Weekdays are usually paced with classes and assignments. Weekends are spent with friends and neighbours or exploring the city. We have to do our chores ourselves. There are not as many student events or clubs as compared to India, a few only.
Dislikes (Part time work): On-campus university jobs are rare. There are opportunities in the library and copy room, but German students are preferred here. Some labs are also there that have paid work, but again rare. Although there are tons of off-campus work opportunities. Both in companies and labs. And also things like delivery, restaurants, etc. The usual choice among students is 10 hours of part-time work a week. This is manageable. Even 4-5 hours is allowed, which gives more time for studies. Up to 20 hours a week is legally allowed. The average pay is 12-15 euros/hour. For 10 hours, it covers the monthly expenses well, providing a normal lifestyle where we cook for ourselves and are not extravagant.

Bonn is a very safe city with an extremely low crime rate.
Tips: It is good to know that STEM departments in Bonn are uncharacteristically rigorous and academically demanding even by German standards. I studied in an excellent Indian university and was generally familiar with most of my master's level curriculum but still struggled substantially with my exams in Bonn. In part, this is because failing courses in Germany is not taboo. Most people take at least one extra semester to graduate. Consequently, professors do not shy away from failing students either. I was awarded the Bonn-Cologne Graduate Scholarship which paid me 1000 euros every month. Other perks of the scholarship included guaranteed subsidized housing in a nice neighbourhood and expedited visa processing. The amount of funding that the University of Bonn receives for research and the sincerity with which research groups are organized are leagues above the resources that students in Indian universities can access. Being in the EU also makes it very easy to travel to nearby countries such as Switzerland, France, Portugal, etc. This allows students to network in conferences and workshops quite easily.
Likes (Safety): Bonn is a very safe city with an extremely low crime rate. In my two years there, I have not heard a single instance of theft, violence or talking. There is also campus police and ample of organisations to report violations. Germans take the law very seriously.
Dislikes (Part time work): I was on a full scholarship throughout my two years there and worked as a research assistant and academic tutor. These jobs were guaranteed to me via my scholarship contact. However, if one is unable to find an academic part-time job, then working in cafes or grocery stores. It might be necessary to have a working proficiency in German.

Supportive faculty at the University of Bonn.
Tips: Know what you want to do in life, the career paths you are going to choose, what makes you happy and at the same time earns money for you. Learn German it opens many doors for you. Try to find a mini/part-time job so that you are not exhausting your block account. A degree should provide you with essential skills that should land you a job. Tailor your master's programme accordingly.
Likes (Public transportation): In Germany, the Deutschland Ticket allows affordable travel on most public transport nationwide. The University of Bonn provides this ticket upon enrollment. Note that it does not cover long distance trains like ICE or EC. For them, you have to provide additional costs.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): German is key for securing jobs outside academia, where full-time well-paid positions are standard. In academia, limited German is often acceptable if you're proficient in your field. However doctoral studies-the most sought-after academic positions are typically part-time (50-60%), unless exceptions apply.

A journey of learning and belonging.
Tips: The main transition I had to undergo was the vast difference in weather and the shorter days. People keep to themselves mostly unless asked for help, and that might lead to feeling lonely at times. I did not apply for any scholarships. I am satisfied with my course structure, although it was quite hectic compared to my peers in other fields of natural sciences.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): So far, I have not had any major issues with my residence permit applications. The waiting time could be subject to your area or city but I would rate my chances of getting a permanent residence in Germany quite high. And when the right time comes, I might also seriously consider getting citizenship.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Usually, the options of meals in India are very varied, which might be a little bit of a cultural shock after coming to Germany, therefore I mostly get my cravings of that warm bowl of daal and price satisfied by cooking at home. Although there are a couple of good Indian restaurants in Bonn, but a little on the pricey end.

Inside MSc Astrophysics at Bonn.
Tips: There is an option to get scholarships under the BCGS framework but it is extremely competitive. The transition from an Indian system of education to the German one is significantly tougher than I had initially presumed. The course structure is awfully hard and the pace can sometimes overwhelm students. But it's an absolute goldmine for those who love this subject.
Likes (Student Life): A lot of student organizations regularly meet at different events and parties. They make sure you feel included. Lots of Beer, free pizzas and barbecue parties, board games, sports and politics are all very common here. You will never feel bored but you may feel overwhelmed.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Indian food restaurants usually make Indian food in a 'western style'. Authentic Indian food is costly and rare. A solid community of Indian workers means that sometimes you could ask for 'Indian Style' food items and they may provide you with one that tastes just like back at home.

The job market is a bit slow due to the inflation.
Tips: Students learn the technical skills before coming to your studies based on your course. Bring warm clothes and cover yourself. You will really learn and enjoy the experience, it is a lifetime opportunity. Learn German before coming to Germany. It will really help with permanent work.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Currently the job market is a bit slow due to the inflation. You would need more experience and apply for many jobs till you get. Also knowing German is a great advantage. Nevertheless you can stay in Germany after completing your studies by a JoS seeker visa.

MSc in Neurosciences - Batch of 2020

Excellent university for starting a research or industry career in Neuroscience.
Tips: Learning German helps a lot, not during the course but after. Most jobs although in English require candidates to also speak German. Also helps to better integrate into society if planning long term here. I did get a scholarship but it is not available anymore. There are many other opportunities to gain like working as a student assistant in a lab for a thesis helped a lot in my case, money wise and professionally. I'm fully satisfied with my course and university. I even pursued my Ph.D. here after Masters and am continuing as a Postdoc researcher here at University of Bonn.
Likes (Indian Food): University Bonn is international and there are always activities going on throughout the year. Bonn is diverse and is excellent for student life. There are German language courses offered by the university for free for the university students. There are career talks, tutorials for students in courses and much more support from the university side.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Excellent infrastructure and research environment. Friendly faculty and faced equal attention from all faculty. Almost all courses offer hands on experience with techniques that are being taught. Lab-oriented courses and practical experience will be heavy. The teaching faculty are mostly German with lab members usually coming from diverse backgrounds.

MSc in Economics - Batch of 2025
Offered by University of Bonn
4
One of the leading universities for studying economics in Germany.
Tips: Before joining, applicants should be well versed with the courses taught and should do a little preparation so that they are prepared for the courses to be taught. M.Sc. in Economics is highly academic-oriented and is mathematically inclined, hence students should be prepared to do courses that involve a lot of math concepts. There are scholarships available and students should apply within the deadline to get a chance to avail them.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transport is well connected and it is the cheapest form of transportation for students. As a student, our semester fee includes transportation costs so we can access all modes of public transportation for free. The semester ticket gives access to all local and regional transport within Germany.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There aren't a lot of Indian restaurants in Bonn, and the available Indian restaurants are somewhat expensive for Indians. There are some Indian grocery stores in Bonn, so there are options to buy Indian groceries, and cooking food yourself is more cost-saving. I think as a student it is expensive to eat outside every day, hence, learning to cook is an essential life skill needed to survive in Germany.

Most supportive and friendly college I ever been to.
Tips: Students should be familiar with the things they need to do after coming here such as doing city registration, opening a bank account, and adapting to the food and lifestyle of the natives. Also, it is better if they have basic knowledge of German. Moreover, the teaching patterns and lab rotations also are a bit different here.
Likes (Value for money): We don't really have to pay the tuition fees and the semester contribution fees that we pay include the public transportation for a large area so we get to travel a lot. Moreover, they also provide such a good atmosphere for study, use innovative techs for teaching and the internet and campus facilities which really makes it a great course to study.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): The teaching faculty is great here. Most of them are Germans, so there can be problems with the accent for the Indians sometimes but that is rare. Moreover, most of them are quite friendly and also very serious about the subjects they teach. Sometimes some of them can be very strict with grading but since it's a course with restricted admissions you get to interact and learn more.
