Balanced student life with safe and supportive study environment.
Tips: Students should know basic German which is important here for daily life and part-time jobs, and Hof is a small city with pace and beauty. Students who have already been living independently would have a smooth transition. I did not avail any scholarships, but options are available. I am satisfied with my university, course and life in Germany due to its quality education and safe environment, especially for girls.
Likes (Safety): Hof is a very calm and secure city where I feel safe even during late hours. Apart from campus security, facilities like good street lighting and reliable public transport add to the overall safety. I have not had any negative experience so far, as the environment is peaceful and student-friendly.
Dislikes (Part time work): Opportunities are available but somewhat limited and competitive, especially in smaller cities like Hof and many require more than basic German skills. On-campus jobs are fewer, while off-campus jobs like retail warehouse jobs are more common. Balancing part-time work with studies is manageable with good time management and students typically earn around 12-15 euros per hour depending on the role.

Good to get in, but not worth the fees.
Tips: It's not worth 3500 eur per semester for what they teach. Also I think I knew better than our lecturers. Even though all the professors are qualified, but uses 5 year old slides for teaching. If you just want to get a master's degree, come to this one. Absolutely no effort required to study.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transport is good around the city. But the worst is when you travel with DB. If you make a home near the college is good as public transport is good so it takes 10 15 minutes to reach college. Some professors are absolute racists; they will allow some nationalities of students in even though they are late.
Dislikes (Part time work): Part-time jobs are available. But college doesn't allow students to work in any Amazon workcenters. The professor says that if a student goes to work, he will not do well in studies. But the content that they teach is better not to be in the university.

Finding the balance in HOF.
Tips: Learn the German language so that you can find jobs here, although the college is highly English speaking too. The staff and faculty members are really very cooperative and the college has a beautiful campus with modern technologies available to students. There's not a single thing to dislike about the college.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Almost every professor has good industry experience and thus, the practical knowledge that they share is very much relevant and valuable. Two-way communication is very much appreciated and practised, which improves the quality of lectures. One thing that should be highly noted is that you don't come late. Professors put the same effort with the same intention irrespective of the number of attendees which reflects their honesty and professionalism towards their role. Really something to learn from them even in everyday life.
Dislikes (Part time work): HOF is a small but peaceful town with a majority of its population who seem to be aged and speak only German and thus it becomes hard to find English speaking jobs here. If you can keep up the conversation in German, you will find it easy to find jobs. And if you do get one, HOF is not expensive anyway, and you will start enjoying and appreciating this beautiful town here.

Life and learnings at Hof University.
Tips: Initially, adjusting to the culture was challenging as it was my first time being so far from home. However, things became smoother over time. Securing a part-time job and making new friends made the experience worthwhile. There are scholarship opportunities available for students with good academic performance. I am fully satisfied with my course and the university.
Likes (Safety): Mostly, residential areas in Germany are very quiet and calm, and it's very safe to walk around, even at night. I once even forgot my phone on public transport, but I was able to get it back due to the good security. Additionally, Germany offers student discounts on public transportation, which is very beneficial.
Dislikes (Indian Food): As an Indian finding Indian food isn't an issue in Germany with numerous Indian and Asian restaurants available everywhere. The prices are also reasonable. I eat Indian food about once a month, and it's easy to find all the necessary products to cook Indian dishes.

Tips: The transition to Germany was both exciting and challenging. I experienced a cultural shift mainly in independent and punctual life here, and also in the direct way people communicate, which I've grown to appreciate. I haven't applied for any scholarships yet, but Hof University offers various scholarships like DAAD, Deutschland Stipendium, and other scholarships. Overall, I am very much satisfied with my university as the professors are approachable, the course is well-structured, and the country offers a safe and international environment that allows me to grow both academically and professionally.
Likes (Student Life): There will be regular lectures, seminars, and presentations. The university campus is very calm and serene, offering a good atmosphere for students to study. The library is well-equipped, and the university campus offers various facilities. Regular career-related and community-based events take place at the university. Hof University has clubs for sports, international networking, entrepreneurship, cultural exchange, and student representation.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are few Indian restaurants but they lack authenticity and are expensive. I would rather prefer trying local cuisines and cooking Indian food at home. Practical and industry-oriented.
Tips: This is a very good course. The internship opportunities are excellent and significantly enhance your CV for future full-time positions. The only consideration is the semester fee of 3500 euros. Apart from that, it's fantastic. Before coming to Germany, it's crucial to learn German to at least a B1 level, and having at least two years of experience in India will make life much easier.
Likes (Indian Food):
There are various options available both on and off campus. The canteen occasionally offers Indian food, and they also have vegan options. However since you've come so far I encourage you to embrace the local cuisine it's quite good as well.
Dislikes (Part time work): There are some student assistant jobs, require you to contact different professors. There are off campus jobs but those usually require good German skills. There are also some helping jobs in production facilities that don't require much German.

Tips: First of all, students should know basic German, at least A1-A2 level, to interact easily with others and take part in discussions; without it, they may feel left out. They should also be hardworking and punctual to complete assignments and tests on time. I did not receive any scholarship, as my current university had a tie-up with a German university, so I went directly through my college. Overall, it was a very good experience. Germany is technologically advanced, offers great exposure, and the industrial visits added immense value to my learning.
Likes (Student Life): I always felt secure both on campus and in the surrounding areas. The environment is peaceful, crime rates are low, and public transportation is reliable even at night. The university also has good safety measures and support systems for students, which made me feel confident about my well-being.
Dislikes (Internships): Securing good opportunities often depends on your language proficiency. Tips: Consider the cost of living and have a backup plan if you don't find a part-time job. Learning German is highly beneficial for the German job market. Likes (Safety): There are no cameras, but the city is mostly secure. We have travelled at night many times without any issues. The streets are well-lit, and police vehicles patrol the area. There isn't much noticeable pollution either.
Dislikes (Part time work): There aren't many part-time jobs in the area, as Hof is a small city. To find work, you may need to travel, which is feasible. Part-time work can be managed alongside studies, with an average payout between 13 to 15 euros.

The university is good and is really well integrated with classrooms, a gym, the mess, etc.
Tips: I believe everyone transforms once they have international exposure. You get to see that people enjoy the sauna more than the gym. Winters are cold and empty, while summers are lively. I was fortunate enough to be selected for a semester scholarship from Erasmus. It was 1800 euros. It helped a lot with the expenses you have as an international student. Satisfied with the university, especially my course, as I come from a different professional background.
Likes (Student Life): Since it is a small city and the highest in Bavaria, coming from India, you get to see snowfall every winter. The college is really well integrated with classrooms, a gym, the mess, and everything else - it’s a complete package. You have many events like a boom party, a Halloween party, and a job fair etc. I was an active member of the SV, which is the student union. You also have the ISN, which is the International Student Network, a Christian Student Group, Hofspannung, and many others.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Although there is one restaurant, Ganesha, where you can find Indian food, the taste isn't on par with the Indian palette. Instead, the curries are sweet. When you're out eating, try doner, local bakeries, or pizza shops. But if you really crave Indian food, I recommend cooking it yourself. YouTube can really help, too. Plus, as a student, cooking your own food is cheaper than eating out, and that's helpful if you're on a budget.

If you're just looking around, you can check out the course curriculum and only apply if you find a program that appeals to you. There are very few part-time job opportunities on campus. There are a few student assistant positions, but they’re not enough. In technical courses, there are a few intern or student positions available. You can apply for them or directly contact a professor for a position. Hof University of Applied Sciences is a safe, secure campus with multiple parking options, a cafeteria, a gym, and many sports facilities. There is also a good connection to public transport. The university has a student culture that is particularly good for Indian students. Additionally, there are student dormitories available.

Not worth the fees but a good university.
Tips: The university offers the program at a very basic level. I knew all of it when I was studying. They explained in the curriculum that there would be a more in-depth coverage, which didn't happen, which is pretty disappointing. The university has a career service where students can get their resumes reviewed. They will then suggest if any corrections need to be made according to the standards of the hiring managers. Students are expected to find their own internships, and LinkedIn is generally a good place to find advertisements for them.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The campus is well-connected, but the bus, the only public transportation option, has low frequency. Buses only arrive hourly, and a semester ticket covers the cost of riding the bus within the city. A person interested in walking a lot will surely enjoy it here.

Hof University is great for learning and it’s very friendly for international students.
Tips: I have started living my life on my own, and there was not very much of a cultural shift as there are many Indians in the university. I didn't get a scholarship, but there are no tuition fees for a master's degree as it's a public university. The criteria for admission are a 2.5 GPA, a German A1 Certificate and an IELTS band score of 7.0. Overall, I am totally satisfied with the course and the country.
Likes (Safety): I have been in the city for 3 months and haven't experienced or heard of any safety issues. It's very safe to travel around the city at night, too. Plus, many people in the city are willing to help in case you encounter any problems or are in a bad situation. I can always go out or come home at night without worrying about being unsafe.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There is only one Indian store nearby that is also located in Hof, even though the Textile Campus is located in Münchberg. There are also only three restaurants nearby, which are also located in Hof and not Münchberg. A meal there usually costs 15 euros. For the most part, I just cook for myself.

A supportive, warm, and welcoming university.
Tips: There is a cultural shift to be aware of. In Germany, shops close at 8 pm every day, including weekends and public holidays. I got a scholarship with Bosch and applied for it through their portal. During my six months there, I worked for 35 hours a week as an intern. It’s very easy to find internships during the course. I was lucky enough to get one in Stuttgart with a decent remuneration, which is usually enough for daily expenses. The experience is excellent as you get to learn so much within the work environment. The colleagues are also excellent and supportive. Overall, I am satisfied with my university and the country is very welcoming.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Finding Indian food options is rather difficult. There are 2-3 Indian restaurants, but they are slightly expensive. Usually, it takes around 25 euros to dine at an Indian restaurant per person. I prefer cooking myself as it’s cheaper because other cuisines are relatively cheaper.

Public transportation is cheap, student life is the best.
Tips: Considerably cultural shift, it is very hard in the beginning, homesickness is something that got me at first but then I made friends (Please do that!). Campus is modern with all the facilities and things are very fast-paced. Just that in general management course there is a gap between the exams so there is semester extension limit. I came to Germany on DAAD, 930 euros what else I need plus top-notch education. I'm very satisfied and have zero complain.
Likes (Safety): It is safe usually some people are friendly and some are not that much. Some can even be racist at times but well that is something to be learned and deal with patience. Other than that there is no threat, things are cool and transportation is also cheap just 1-2 euro ticket for buses and trams.
Dislikes (Indian Food): The price is fair but the market has not many options. At Ganesha I have tried butter chicken and mango lassi. Well, there is a huge demand for butter chicken in foreign nations so it is believed that it is the most Indian dish (Laugh!). Per person, I guess it costs around 25-30 euros and the taste is okay.

A great choice for higher education
Tips: Before coming to Duisburg-Essen, you need to brace yourself for a seriously research-heavy curriculum where nobody is going to hold your hand. The professors expect a massive amount of independent learning, so if you don't stay on top of the readings and lab work on your own, you'll easily fall behind. Also, while you can technically survive an English-taught master's with just basic German, you absolutely need it to get through daily life in the Ruhr area, handle the city registration office (Bürgeramt), or grab a decent part-time student job.
I didn't receive any scholarships to study here—like most international students at public universities, I'm completely self-funding my life. Despite the academic pressure and having to watch my budget, I'm genuinely happy with my choice to come here. The level of education you get at UDE is top-tier, Essen and Duisburg are super safe cities to live in, and being in the heart of Germany's industrial hub means the long-term career and networking opportunities are definitely worth the hustle.
Likes (Safety): I rated safety 5/5 because I always felt safe on campus and in the city. The campus is well-lit, secure and easily accessible by safe public transport. I had only positive experiences and never faced safety issues. People are friendly and most of them are willing to help you whenever you ask.
Dislikes (Value for money): Okay, so even though Duisburg-Essen is a public university with no actual tuition fees, I still rated the value for money on the lower side because the hidden costs of studying here really add up. Yes, you only pay a basic semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag), but that fee has been creeping up every single semester. Plus, finding a cheap room through the Studierendenwerk dorms is an absolute nightmare—the waiting lists are endless, so most of us are forced into the private market where landlords completely rip you off for basic apartments.
When you factor in the rising cost of groceries, health insurance, and student rent in the Ruhr region, 'free education' doesn't actually feel that free. On top of that, the university facilities can be a total mixed bag. Some of the campus buildings and libraries feel incredibly outdated and crowded, and trying to get actual administrative support from the uni offices feels like pulling teeth. When you're working a part-time job just to survive month-to-month, the overall experience doesn't feel like the amazing bargain they promise on the brochure.

Friendly university with lot of practical experience
Tips: The course has a lot of assignments, but that too depends on the subject one chooses, which we have to balance along with internships and household work. The university is very friendly, with good faculty and lots of practical experience in labs. There are a lot of semester-starting parties, which is a good place to get to know many people. Although in the beginning everything seems a little too much to manage all on our own, slowly it seems like a part of life. Yes, the scholarship can be availed if one is struggling financially with not getting part-time/internship; we have to apply for financial help at Asta, the student representative community of the university. So the overall experience of university is good, with friendly faculty and student communities, and NRW should be the preferred choice for any student due to a lot of student advantages related to traveling.
Likes (Public transportation): The transportation is very good, and as a student, it's free, as the cost is covered in the semester ticket. So we don't have to pay anything if using public transportation even across all of Germany. There are buses running all over the city every few minutes, so the transportation is very good.
Dislikes (Indian Food): As a vegetarian, the food options would be limited, as Europe is a heavily meat-driven place. There are some Indian restaurants, but again, as a student, eating out daily would be quite expensive. So the feasible option is to cook at home mostly. In a supermarket one can get all kinds of daily food items, although if one wants to eat Indian vegetables, then they would have to visit Indian stores, which are also present in Duisburg.

Good Beginners College
Tips: 1. Learn cooking; force yourself to parties and other events in the start even if you don't feel like it, as they will help you mentally in the long run. Connections are as important as studies. 2. I am a Deutschland Stipendium holder, and I get 300 EUR every month plus events. The university does a good job of making us aware of scholarships by way of events such as StipendienTag. 3. I am glad I came here. Besides academics, living alone in another place makes you ready to face anything, as there can be 100 different problems you may face, but you force yourself to solve all of them.
Likes (Indian Food): There are a lot of types of restaurants available nearby, including Indian. The prices can range from 4 eur to upwards of 15 eur. Besides Indian food, options might be limited for vegetarians. Student housing here provides a kitchen. Cooking for yourself is one of the best ways to eat cheap and healthy.
Dislikes (Internships): The university doesn't do much for finding internships. It is up to us to find them. One of the biggest hurdles that most students face is finding internships. As for bachelors, an internship is obligatory; this can cause graduation to be delayed for a lot of people.

There are many events within the University. Students need to utilise them properly
Tips: The education systems in India and Germany are completely different. Also, the exams for each subject, which are similar to government exams, are there. Candidates need to answer 50 short questions, including math, within one hour, and one needs to study pretty well.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transportation is very good; all corners of Duisburg and Essen are very well connected with buses and trams. Also, there are trains between these two cities very often. There is also shuttle service between two campuses of the university. With the Deutschland ticket provided by the university, all public transportation is available.
Dislikes (Internships): Getting internships is very difficult due to the bad job market in Germany. Candidates need to apply a lot and also shouldn't get disappointed when some initial interviews get rejected. This tenure of rejection can last pretty long, and one should remain mentally tough till the end.

Decent University with standardised principles
Tips: Look, if you're coming to UDE, you’ve got to actively force yourself out of the international bubble. Actually make an effort to connect with the local German students, and seriously, start using the campus libraries—like the LK in Duisburg or the GW over in Essen—on a regular basis. Also, just don't skip your lectures. German professors do not sit around waiting for you to catch up, and if you miss even a couple of classes, you're going to completely struggle to wrap your head around the material later on.
Honestly, the absolute biggest roadblock at Duisburg-Essen is just adjusting to how things work here. Way too many people come in and treat learning German like a side project. That is a massive mistake. If you want any real shot at landing a working student gig or an internship around the Ruhr area, fluent German is your main ticket. Oh and try to get your German driving license squared away as soon as you can. It sounds like a random chore, but if you’re eyeing engineering or logistics roles across NRW, it’s a total game-changer.

Very good studies but not for middle class people from India
Tips: The first thing to know before coming here is that any exam that you want to pass only has 3 attempts. If you fail on your 3rd attempt, not only your admission but also your visa will be cancelled. Indian students mostly cannot avail scholarships. University of Duisburg Essen is very strict and advanced in teaching compared to Bachelors or previous studies compared from India. Keep it in mind that anyone who wants to join here has a shift in their entire perspective of thinking on how to study and how much time to spend on studying. Almost more than 90% of Indian students who pass out from this university were spending 3 or more years for master's and 5 or more years for bachelor's studies. If you want to do the part-time job while studying at this university, you must add at least one extra year to these timelines.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Faculty are very experienced, and teaching is always good if you want to study here. There is no point in saying otherwise if you are not keen on studying. International friendly staff and you will rarely experience racism. You will find good diversified faculty here. Reaching out to any faculty requires a prior appointment. So planning ahead is always essential here.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Let’s be real, the current job market is pretty brutal right now. If you're planning to do your master's at Duisburg-Essen, just know that the surrounding cities are absolutely packed with international students and expats. Because of that, the competition for every single part-time job or internship in the area is insane—you’re basically competing with a massive crowd for the same few roles. On top of that, the courses at this uni are heavily geared toward research and academic theory. They do a great job of pushing a passion for science and further studies, but they honestly don't prepare you at all for how cutthroat the actual job market is.
