An amazing experience at LU.
Tips: Swedes are introverted. Do not come with the idea of thinking anyone can initiate small talk here as most of the people are very reserved and tend to stick within their own small groups. Apart from that they are really friendly and helpful even in classes.
Likes (Safety): Lund is a very calm and peaceful place where you can even go out on a walk at 2 AM and no one will bother you. I've had friends who've told me they don't feel comfortable at all walking out during the night. A small city with only a student population in the majority makes it that way.
Dislikes (Part time work): Part-time roles are not easy to get as there is a huge demand with less opportunities and since I'm doing a one year course, I personally feel I do not have enough time to go for a part time job as well. There are however student nations one can volunteer at and get a few benefits from volunteering there which helps you become more involved with student life.

Plan your masters properly and also enjoy your student life at Lund University.
Tips: Have a clear idea of which course you want to join. Do some research on what you could work after doing the course you wanted to study. I didn't get any scholarship but there are only a few scholarships for my particular course. However, apply to the Lund University scholarship, you might get a scholarship if you have good scores.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty members have much knowledge about what they teach and some even have work experience before coming into the teaching domain. They will help us with our research ideas and you can mail them whenever you want. They would reply within 24 hrs. Students can actually meet the professor if they are at their cabins. The teaching method is more or less similar to what we have in India but the examination and assignments would be different. So, which actually means the learning methods vary a bit.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There aren't many Indian restaurants in Lund. There are a few shops but I genuinely feel that the price they are charging is not worth the food. Moreover, I cook for myself and it will also reduce my monthly expenses. Eating outside is actually expensive from a student's perspective.

LU is a top-ranked global university offering quality education in a supportive environment.
Tips: Expect a very relaxed work environment. My course in particular has a very heavy workload, but in general, the university is pretty relaxed. You will be able to find a lot of different activities all throughout your time here to cool off. There are a lot of parties, brunches, pub nights, reading clubs, language cafes, etc. Happening all the time. There are also groups for students interested in sports, arts, hiking, etc. There will be a cultural shift coming from India, mainly with food and the way studies happen here. You are expected to be independent with your work. Teachers rarely spoon-feed you.
Likes (Safety): The city is very safe, especially in the central areas after dark. There are constant police and security patrols happening around the city. The university also has its own security team. You can be out pretty late at night without worrying about any serious security issues. That being said, you still must ACT with common sense.
Dislikes (Part time work): On campus, you will find a few jobs in the cafes located in different buildings around the campus. Off-campus part-time jobs are more difficult to find for international students since a lot of them require you to know Swedish. However, you might get lucky with some part-time tech jobs.

Master of science in Biology - Batch of 2024

Sweden is a great place to study and the faculty are really approachable.
Tips: There was a cultural change and a change in the professional environment, but I am easygoing and accepting of changes. I had no trouble finding summer work, internships, or a Master's thesis topic. I did not receive a scholarship. I studied Molecular Biology in the Faculty of Science. I had a good experience at Lund University.
Likes (Safety): The university has good transportation, well-lit areas in the evening, a police station, and security guards. The students and other people are well-behaved and come from all over the world, making it a truly international student city. I never had a bad experience there.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I prefer to cook for myself while I am studying at Lund University. There are almost all cuisines available, but the Indian food is not very good. The South East Asian and European food is very good. I also like that I can meet people from many different cultures here. Cooking for myself allows me to maintain my diet and stay within my budget.

Multi dimensional if you can manage your time properly.
Tips: Course structure is hectic so be prepared for that. Competition for scholarships is very high, you can expect a scholarship only if you have 90 per cent in your Bachelors. Overall if you can manage your studies and social life you will have an excellent time at the university.
Likes (Safety): Sweden is one of the safest countries in the world and I haven't faced any issues inside or outside university during my studies. The accommodation for students within University and outside the university is good you can have a great time if you come with a bunch of friends.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Food options are limited at the university but you can cook at the place where you are staying. Restaurants are available, especially with Indian food but don't expect much from them as most of the hotels are run by people outside India except a few choose wisely before visiting any restaurant.

A perfect place for your educational adventures.
Tips: Swedish will help you really in many ways, from getting part-time jobs, to making connections, to converting interviews into full-time opportunities. Be open minded, don’t bring any cultural baggage with you.
Likes (Public transportation): It is easy, reliable, and not cheap though. You should be just fine with getting a bike. Get a second hand bike for around 10,000. You should be more than fine.
Dislikes (Internships): Swedish language can be a barrier, I would recommend to learn it beforehand if you are coming here. My program is only for 1 year, so I am not actively looking at internships, but from what I know, it’s not easy for international students. Internships are difficult if you do not know Swedish. In Lund, there is a great industry around, so whichever field you specialise in, you’ll find some employer working in that sector. But if you know some Swedish at say A2 level, it’ll become way too easy to get in.

Good experience. I was able to secure job with post study visa.
Tips: Everything is good, but learning the local language is very important for job prospects. Also, an internship during study time would help a lot. The quality of education is very high. Lots of indian students on campus. Good experience. Would recommend.

Excellent student facilities and opportunities to grow.
Tips: I absolutely loved the student culture in Brussels, which allows you to be independent, self-reliant and responsible in a conducive environment, fostering individual growth and encouraging merit-based opportunities. Anyone hoping to make a career in life sciences should sincerely consider this beautiful option. I am quite satisfied with the beautiful education that Belgium offered me at the VUB. Our professors put in serious efforts to make our classes productive and infuse research-based learning from their own works, too. It's a rigorous curriculum. It will always be special.
Likes (Student Life): The classes used to take up most of the time. On some days, the classes would start at 7:30 and would continue until 6 in the evening, in practical sessions. There are orientation events for new students joining the campus with fun activities. There are also various student groups/ volunteer groups that you may join.
Dislikes (Part time work): Part-time work opportunities are available, and your student visa allows for 20 hours per week. However, the course curriculum is extensive, so you barely have time for regular part-time jobs. There are student jobs, odd jobs, nanny jobs, etc., which pay 10 to 20 euros per hour.

From small town to global vision.
Tips: I found the cultural difference between India and Belgium is quite striking, especially coming from a small town in India. However, enrolling in a Dutch language class helped in smooth integration and also meeting other international students helps as well. Experienced a steep learning curve at the start while adapting to new weather conditions, food, and communication style. Learning to cook and doing everything by myself while taking on a challenging academic pursuit changed me completely. I secured "ICAR-International Fellowship", which is 1800 euros per month, which was quite generous, covering all of my expenses. It's a competitive fellowship offered by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. While applying, you need to have secured a promoter/advisor from the University abroad and a tentative 3-year research plan. Then comes an interview round. You need to present your research plan, methods, collaborations, impact, and timeline in 30 to 40 minutes, including questions and answers. I am extremely satisfied with the VUB, as there is freedom of expression, novelty in research, and it helped me build not just my career, but overall personality and life. Brussels, being in the heart of Europe, gave me exposure to many countries, cultures, and complexities. It truly helped me build my worldview.
Likes (Internships): Internships are a great way to get hands-on experience and a better understanding of the theoretical knowledge you gain at university. They're also a great way to network and impress potential employers, which can boost your chances of getting your next job or another opportunity.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Permanent immigration/settlement option is getting difficult every passing year due to a rise in political fiction. As a non-European citizen, there is a 5 year rule in place in Belgium. During these 5 years, applicants should show language proficiency such as Dutch, French, or German level up to B1 level (it was A2 until March/April 2025). Moreover, social integration course and economic contribution through paying taxes (40% taxes in Belgium). However, as a student one does not pay taxes, therefore the authority consider the time spent as a student as a half, while accounting it towards a 5-year rule. For example, it takes 5 years to complete a Ph.D, thus, the authority took it as 2.5 years, and you have to work for another 2.5 years before you can be eligible to apply for permanent residence. It is definitely possible, but very challenging.

Vrije Universiteit Brussel has many on-campus part-time opportunities for students.
Tips: There are on-campus jobs available in the library, faculty, restaurant, and bar. You are limited to 20 hours per week. The rate of pay depends on which job you have. If you get a degree in engineering, you can look for opportunities in Flanders and Brussels. There, companies are willing to sponsor visas for qualified professionals, and they will pay industry-standard salaries. If you like any course, feel free to apply. I received a scholarship from the Department of Photonics Engineering. It was 10,000 per year. Overall, I am very satisfied with the university, the course and the country.
