It’s was a beautiful time
Tips: They should be ready for a change and willing to accept the ways of the country's functionality and organize food and household things so college life will be easy. the college gives a scholarship of 1000€ every month if the grades reached are in top 10 in college.
Likes (Indian Food): The food is really nice, but the food is not really my type because we eat a lot of spices, and in Germany they eat bland food. So it’s better to find ways to sort food that fits your taste of home. There are amazing restaurants if we are open to trying new cuisines.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): There are very few companies that offer sponsorship, as there are a very few companies willing to take freshers and students. There are good jobs, but they require German to attain them, and they offer a minimum salary of 3500€ to start, and it’s very reasonable to survive.

A journey in a Bavarian University.
Tips: Be ready for a range of culture shock. As it is a small town and in the Bavarian state, language barrier is a major concern. Limited part-time job opportunities in the city. I did not avail a scholarship, but there are possibilities to apply for one. More than satisfied with the experience in the course, university, and the country.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): There are high chances of getting employed within Germany after a degree from this university. Although I tried to apply to many jobs, I could not land much of an interview considering the time of my graduation and the global events. Given a chance, I would have surely immigrated permanently to the country.
Dislikes (Value for money): Limited exposure to big companies as it is a small town. Getting into an internship during the course curriculum is challenging within the city. Students often may to relocate to different parts of the country. Increasing the living expenses. The hands-on projects although beneficial may not add value to your resume.

Tips: German is really important in Germany; that's the thing. You can travel in Europe; that is another benefit and students go to semester exchanges, from which you can go another country also to explore and spend your one semester in another side of the world, which is also beneficial for connection.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): Because the lifestyle here is way better than what we compare to other countries. Because when you know their language, it's really easy to live and settle. Moreover, many people do like that, and you can get a good amount of money for your work as compared to other countries.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Look, if you’re heading to THWS, you gotta realize fast that learning German isn't a side hobby—it's pure survival. No German means finding a part-time job, an internship, or even just making local friends is gonna be a massive uphill battle. Best thing you can do is find a local to talk to. Having a German speaker to practice with completely changes the game and helps you actually break into social circles.
Living here means you get a front-row seat to how seriously people take their culture and rules. Things like punctuality and quiet hours are real, not just memes and you have to adapt quickly.
On the bright side, the location is a huge plus. Würzburg and Schweinfurt are super central so hopping on a train or a cheap flight to travel around Europe during breaks is incredibly easy. Honestly it’s a solid setup that forces you to mature fast but you absolutely have to grind on the language if you want to make it work.

Nice futuristic course in English
Tips: The uni itself is actually really nice, and the whole bachelor's program is fully in English. The only real catch is that the city is pretty small. If you’re coming from a tier 1 or tier 2 city in India, you're definitely going to notice a lack of facilities and entertainment options around here. On the bright side, the campus is packed with international students, though a huge chunk of them are from India, so you'll easily find a community.
Likes (Safety): It's very safe even at night; I sometimes go on night walks. There are no cases of robbery, harassment, or anything else. There might be a bit dark / less light in some areas, but it's safe. I see people traveling city to city till 12.00. I feel safe all the time.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The public transportation is good; it's just that there are no buses and transportation after 10. And the buses come every 20 minutes and some in 1 hour. People prefer to take the bike and e-scooter to take with them. And it is very common to walk from place to place.

Good public university and helpful faculty.
Tips: The university is good especially if you are interested in robotics, mechatronics, and business management. But I don't like the city that much compared to other cities in Germany. It's small and people are not interested in talking. The attendance is not compulsory.
Likes (Value for money): It is a public university, which is in English. And tuition fee is 130 per semester, which is very less. And the degree like robotics, mechatronics and business engineering are booming a lot, so it is good.
Dislikes (Public transportation): I don't like the city transportation a lot, because there is no bus available after 10 pm. But the transportation is free inside the city. But if you want to travel outside the city, which is very frequent, the ticket is 30 for students. It always increases a little every year.

Try to learn German before coming here.
Tips: Language is the game changer over here. If you have a good language grip in German, you can opt for many things easily and get jobs and else way more easily. Here you have to focus on studies because they are not as easy as you think. If you don't pay attention to your studies, you won't be able to pass.
Likes (Internships): Germany is full of opportunities and has a lot of on field options. Explore the opportunities and get a grip on the German language and get the jobs. There are jobs for which if you are good at one thing also so you can also apply.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There is not much vegetarian food and we don't have buffet options but they can add some more good daily to go items like fruits and snacks. The mess should be opened at least a bit longer so after the heavy sessions we can have some food.

The teachers are really good and supportive and easily approachable.
Tips: Study daily or else you are about to fail and drop out hence be sincere and focused. The major cultural shift is that here, no one is gonna spoon feed you stuff, and you need to be self-independent and also be ready to survive alone. The scholarships are zero.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The teachers are really good and supportive and easily approachable, while some teachers' methods aren't that good but the material is always provided and you can't complain, it's simply the culture here that there is more focus on self study rather than in-class.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Well, finding a job isn't really that easy and requires you to find that on your own and especially considering the current market, it is not that easy hence post study jobs are a bit of an issue. I haven't seen many companies sponsoring visas and stuff, but yeah, I'm not aware of much of it.

German small-town college experience.
Tips: It does get lonely sometimes so learn to love your own company. But with all the freedom, it's also easy to get sidetracked. About scholarships, given that the course is already free I haven't really heard of scholarships, but I'm sure they exist and are also really hard to attain.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The professors are all I was expecting and more and definitely so much better than the experience I had in India. They are genuine Masters of their subjects and won't hesitate to go the extra mile to explain something to you. With the lack of an attendance requirement, if you approach them they know you're also genuinely interested and not forced into the class.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): I believe you have to stay in the country for at least 5 years which is longer than the duration of the course in general, and a language certificate is also required which is quite hard to acquire. I personally moved from India to explore new regions and I find that life here is more peaceful and I would like to settle here.

The college is ace.
Tips: Before joining this college they must know that they have to walk a lot here because public transportation here is almost the same as pathetic. Other than this everything is very good in Schweinfurt. Grocery stores are nice. We won't find this city very populated. It's a peaceful city. Also people here are nice.
Likes (Part time work): I rated 5 for part-time job because it's easy to find job here in nearby cities. Like Wurzburg, Bad Kissingen, Orenbach, etc. Students can easily find job here. The thing is, they only have to show little effort in finding jobs. They have to ask each and every outlet for the availability of jobs.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Many students who work night shifts they don't get a bus after 10 p.m. Also, this is very convenient for us because we have to walk so much. Already, we are so tired that it makes us very comfortable with public transportation.

Short review on the real picture.
Tips: Few scholarships, should have good German skills, should have money to cover the stay in German, and don't depend on part time jobs. One might not have a very fun life in Schweinfurt. It's a small town that shuts down after 8 pm. You would hardly see people outside and other than Indians, you would feel isolated from the locals.
Likes (Safety): The city is flooded with Indians, so some might have a based experience. Also bus drivers and shop owners prefer to have white guests than Indians, some previous experiences with Indian students haven't been so nice with them and also the same thing is with landlords, they tend to avoid Indians.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): There are no partner companies, and also the job market is shrinking so entry level jobs are harder. The university only has prep for the job market but no real interaction, hence no networking opportunities. Which creates a lot of pressure and confusion about what to do after this degree.

Good transportation and people.
Tips: Germany doesn't have a tuition fee system. We don't have to pay any tuition fee. We only have to pay a semester contribution every semester, which is approximately 125 euros. I have changed and developed a lot of things as a student how to manage finances every month, cleaning and maintaining the house. Studying and doing part time at the same time, so I have learned a lot and grown a lot in these years.
Likes (Safety): The whole town is very small, so all the things are nearby. You can simply walk for all the things other than the university campus. The university doesn't give any such special safety, but the city itself is very safe less crowd, perfect for students. No bad experiences, very in the city, the German language is very much encouraged to have better and better experiences throughout the city.
Dislikes (Public transportation): Public transportation is good. The university card includes local public transportation within the city. For travel across Germany, students can purchase a discounted Deutschland ticket through the university portals. This ticket is valid on all public transportation nationwide, but excludes high-speed trains ( ICE ).

A good future opportunity.
Tips: Look for apartments long before you come here. On Sunday, everything is closed. If you are a vegetarian then you will have very few choices at restaurants. Apply for government scholarships. The city is not very lively so make friends to hang out with from the university.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): There is a pretty good chance of settling down. You get a permanent residence card after 18 months of job. And then citizenship is offered after 3-4 years. It is surely a very good option to settle here, considering the job security, safety, and quality of life.
Dislikes (Internships): The professors support well in finding an internship. They all have long term working experiences, so they have good connections with companies and can recommend you, so build good connections with your professors. They are relevant to the field of study, and offer opportunities in almost all departments of the college.

A great choice for higher education
Tips: Before coming to Duisburg-Essen, you need to brace yourself for a seriously research-heavy curriculum where nobody is going to hold your hand. The professors expect a massive amount of independent learning, so if you don't stay on top of the readings and lab work on your own, you'll easily fall behind. Also, while you can technically survive an English-taught master's with just basic German, you absolutely need it to get through daily life in the Ruhr area, handle the city registration office (Bürgeramt), or grab a decent part-time student job.
I didn't receive any scholarships to study here—like most international students at public universities, I'm completely self-funding my life. Despite the academic pressure and having to watch my budget, I'm genuinely happy with my choice to come here. The level of education you get at UDE is top-tier, Essen and Duisburg are super safe cities to live in, and being in the heart of Germany's industrial hub means the long-term career and networking opportunities are definitely worth the hustle.
Likes (Safety): I rated safety 5/5 because I always felt safe on campus and in the city. The campus is well-lit, secure and easily accessible by safe public transport. I had only positive experiences and never faced safety issues. People are friendly and most of them are willing to help you whenever you ask.
Dislikes (Value for money): Okay, so even though Duisburg-Essen is a public university with no actual tuition fees, I still rated the value for money on the lower side because the hidden costs of studying here really add up. Yes, you only pay a basic semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag), but that fee has been creeping up every single semester. Plus, finding a cheap room through the Studierendenwerk dorms is an absolute nightmare—the waiting lists are endless, so most of us are forced into the private market where landlords completely rip you off for basic apartments.
When you factor in the rising cost of groceries, health insurance, and student rent in the Ruhr region, 'free education' doesn't actually feel that free. On top of that, the university facilities can be a total mixed bag. Some of the campus buildings and libraries feel incredibly outdated and crowded, and trying to get actual administrative support from the uni offices feels like pulling teeth. When you're working a part-time job just to survive month-to-month, the overall experience doesn't feel like the amazing bargain they promise on the brochure.

Friendly university with lot of practical experience
Tips: The course has a lot of assignments, but that too depends on the subject one chooses, which we have to balance along with internships and household work. The university is very friendly, with good faculty and lots of practical experience in labs. There are a lot of semester-starting parties, which is a good place to get to know many people. Although in the beginning everything seems a little too much to manage all on our own, slowly it seems like a part of life. Yes, the scholarship can be availed if one is struggling financially with not getting part-time/internship; we have to apply for financial help at Asta, the student representative community of the university. So the overall experience of university is good, with friendly faculty and student communities, and NRW should be the preferred choice for any student due to a lot of student advantages related to traveling.
Likes (Public transportation): The transportation is very good, and as a student, it's free, as the cost is covered in the semester ticket. So we don't have to pay anything if using public transportation even across all of Germany. There are buses running all over the city every few minutes, so the transportation is very good.
Dislikes (Indian Food): As a vegetarian, the food options would be limited, as Europe is a heavily meat-driven place. There are some Indian restaurants, but again, as a student, eating out daily would be quite expensive. So the feasible option is to cook at home mostly. In a supermarket one can get all kinds of daily food items, although if one wants to eat Indian vegetables, then they would have to visit Indian stores, which are also present in Duisburg.

Good Beginners College
Tips: 1. Learn cooking; force yourself to parties and other events in the start even if you don't feel like it, as they will help you mentally in the long run. Connections are as important as studies. 2. I am a Deutschland Stipendium holder, and I get 300 EUR every month plus events. The university does a good job of making us aware of scholarships by way of events such as StipendienTag. 3. I am glad I came here. Besides academics, living alone in another place makes you ready to face anything, as there can be 100 different problems you may face, but you force yourself to solve all of them.
Likes (Indian Food): There are a lot of types of restaurants available nearby, including Indian. The prices can range from 4 eur to upwards of 15 eur. Besides Indian food, options might be limited for vegetarians. Student housing here provides a kitchen. Cooking for yourself is one of the best ways to eat cheap and healthy.
Dislikes (Internships): The university doesn't do much for finding internships. It is up to us to find them. One of the biggest hurdles that most students face is finding internships. As for bachelors, an internship is obligatory; this can cause graduation to be delayed for a lot of people.

There are many events within the University. Students need to utilise them properly
Tips: The education systems in India and Germany are completely different. Also, the exams for each subject, which are similar to government exams, are there. Candidates need to answer 50 short questions, including math, within one hour, and one needs to study pretty well.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transportation is very good; all corners of Duisburg and Essen are very well connected with buses and trams. Also, there are trains between these two cities very often. There is also shuttle service between two campuses of the university. With the Deutschland ticket provided by the university, all public transportation is available.
Dislikes (Internships): Getting internships is very difficult due to the bad job market in Germany. Candidates need to apply a lot and also shouldn't get disappointed when some initial interviews get rejected. This tenure of rejection can last pretty long, and one should remain mentally tough till the end.

Decent University with standardised principles
Tips: Look, if you're coming to UDE, you’ve got to actively force yourself out of the international bubble. Actually make an effort to connect with the local German students, and seriously, start using the campus libraries—like the LK in Duisburg or the GW over in Essen—on a regular basis. Also, just don't skip your lectures. German professors do not sit around waiting for you to catch up, and if you miss even a couple of classes, you're going to completely struggle to wrap your head around the material later on.
Honestly, the absolute biggest roadblock at Duisburg-Essen is just adjusting to how things work here. Way too many people come in and treat learning German like a side project. That is a massive mistake. If you want any real shot at landing a working student gig or an internship around the Ruhr area, fluent German is your main ticket. Oh and try to get your German driving license squared away as soon as you can. It sounds like a random chore, but if you’re eyeing engineering or logistics roles across NRW, it’s a total game-changer.

Very good studies but not for middle class people from India
Tips: The first thing to know before coming here is that any exam that you want to pass only has 3 attempts. If you fail on your 3rd attempt, not only your admission but also your visa will be cancelled. Indian students mostly cannot avail scholarships. University of Duisburg Essen is very strict and advanced in teaching compared to Bachelors or previous studies compared from India. Keep it in mind that anyone who wants to join here has a shift in their entire perspective of thinking on how to study and how much time to spend on studying. Almost more than 90% of Indian students who pass out from this university were spending 3 or more years for master's and 5 or more years for bachelor's studies. If you want to do the part-time job while studying at this university, you must add at least one extra year to these timelines.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Faculty are very experienced, and teaching is always good if you want to study here. There is no point in saying otherwise if you are not keen on studying. International friendly staff and you will rarely experience racism. You will find good diversified faculty here. Reaching out to any faculty requires a prior appointment. So planning ahead is always essential here.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Let’s be real, the current job market is pretty brutal right now. If you're planning to do your master's at Duisburg-Essen, just know that the surrounding cities are absolutely packed with international students and expats.
