Good university, local students do not participate in international events that much.
Tips: If you do enough research, then nothing is new or culture shock. There are scholarships that depend on your grade. Accomodation is provided by the university. Go to the international office events so you will know most of the stuff about ULM and the university.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transport frequency is good; quality is also good. Easy to access, you can easily buy tickets if you don't have one. Every 5-10 min you can take the tram or bus, depending on your line. Very punctual; if you are not at the bus stop, the bus will not stop for you.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): Most of the professors are very nice. In my department, it depends on who you are trying to connect with. The more valuable the professor, the more time it takes to reach them. They are nice and helpful to talk to if you ask for guidance. They are the same for every student; they do not differ based on country.

My personal experience at Ulm Univeristy
Tips: The culture shock here is honestly huge, but people genuinely go out of their way to help you figure out how the whole uni system works. And yeah, I actually managed to land some scholarships, mostly down to keeping my grades up and staying on top of a bunch of different part-time gigs. I am extremely satisfied; however, managing study and part-time work is very stressful. People often leave the course in the middle because they cannot handle the stress.
Likes (Public transportation): Overall, the public transportation in Germany is great; there are usually monthly passes that can be purchased. These passes include tickets for traveling by train, bus, or tram. Whichever city you travel to with this pass, you can take the buses and trams of that city for free.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The main reason I rated post-study jobs so low is that everything honestly boils down to the language barrier. If you don't speak fluent German, trying to land any kind of work out here—whether it's just a quick part-time student gig or a proper full-time career after you graduate—is an absolute uphill battle. Without the language, you are completely stuck. And even if you do somehow get your foot in the door German companies are incredibly set in their ways. You don't get any say over your job title or what they pay you; companies here just follow a rigid, pre-set grid where your paycheck depends entirely on whatever degree you happen to be holding. So while the pay scales are fair, actually catching a break in the first place is a massive headache if your German is a bit rusty. U.L.M.: Underestimated but Learned and Multidisciplinary
Tips: You can be yourself at this university. Although having some German language knowledge is always beneficial and recommended. There are few cultural deviations, but nothing major to hinder your growth. I didn't apply for any scholarships, but there are some available. I am very satisfied with the course I chose; it broadens the horizons for both psychology and computer science students.
Likes (Safety): The entire university is safe and can be opened only with a student card. Police can be called and will arrive within 5 minutes if need be. A person can be out at any time of the day; it has happened with me, and I felt completely safe. The same is the case with an ambulance.
Dislikes (Part time work): Look, the coursework at Ulm University is a massive full-time commitment, period. If you try to pick up some random, out-of-field part-time job just to make extra cash, you’re honestly going to waste your time and end up dragging out your graduation date forever. Surviving your modules here while working on the side is incredibly brutal anyway.
That’s honestly the whole point of how the German system is set up—you don't have to shell out a fortune on tuition fees like you would in the US, UK, Australia, or Canada. Because you aren't drowning in massive tuition debt, the expectation is that you can actually survive without working twenty hours a week, allowing you to completely lock in and focus on your studies instead of burning out.

My experience at ulm university as a master's student.
Tips: University is pretty good, but in this state there is a semester fee of 1500 euros, so it is better to join universities with no additional fees for international students. It would have been worth it if there were more jobs post-studies; however, considering the current German economy, I would not recommend anyone to do their master's.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Universities in general are pretty good, accepting all cultures, and they promote the right intent toward their economy. Teachers are very approachable, and they clarify doubts. Teaching is also pretty good in my university; they give notes, but you also have to do a lot of self-preparation, as there is no spoon-feeding in Germany. Teaching faculty is quite diverse with people from various countries across Europe as well as from other parts of the world.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): I did my master's in Germany because it was a cheaper option compared to other countries. But having traveled and lived across 22 countries, Germany is unfortunately the epicenter of racism and xenophobia. And besides this, the German economy is stagnant at the moment, so getting a job is extremely difficult, and also there is no job security anymore.

Rigorous, rewarding and worth the Adjustment!
Tips: The shift is real—more structured, less spontaneous. Independence is built fast out of necessity. It's challenging initially but rewarding in the long run. Applied through DAAD & university portals. Would recommend to anyone serious about their field.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Professors are genuinely helpful and accessible—office hours are real, not ceremonial. Research-led teaching means you engage with current problems, not just textbooks. Industrial visits and lab training are part of the course. Faculty is mostly German.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Indian options exist but are limited in price. Most cooking happens at home—groceries are affordable and manageable. Eating out is occasional, more of a social thing. A few Indian/Asian restaurants are nearby; meals range from 15 to 120 euros. Turkish-done shops are cheaper, around 8 euros.

Good university for research but the job prospects are average.
Tips: The examination system is rigid, and passing the exam could be tough without sufficient preparations. Staying focused in the study is a necessity. One might struggle to find a job depending on the economic situation at that time. There are job fairs at the uni, but not like on-campus recruitment in India. Part-time jobs are available but not guaranteed for everyone.
Likes (Safety): Town is pretty safe for all practical purposes. It is in the southern part of Germany bordering Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, which are considered the safest regions in Germany. Recently some theft cases and drug-related cases are rising, but nothing to worry about as of now. The police are very responsive and fast.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Eating outside - 2 or 3 Indian restaurants; for a student, the pricing is expensive. If one cooks at home, it's cheap and very cheap if cooked in a group. However, Indian cooking could consume a lot of time and hamper studies. One should have to adjust to the German food. Also, the options for vegetarian foods are limited.

Great study fun balance, long term friendships and life changing experiences.
Tips: Studies would not be easy but the faculty is very helpful and the resources are good. If you put in consistent work and actually engage with your peers, it gets much easier. There are enough international students to mingle with however, Germans are also very kind and, contrary to popular belief, quite friendly. You can get scholarships if you have good grades. Very satisfied with the experiences.
Likes (Student Life): Despite being a small city, there were many cultural events, festivals, etc. The time tables are not heavy so you get time to work on your studies, reports, and projects during the day itself. The course structure was very well organised and more emphasis was placed on projects that brought flexibility as well as accountability for the work one did. As for the city, summer is amazing. Student dorms are very well equipped and there are many city-wide discounts for students.
Dislikes (Part time work): On-campus jobs are limited. In the city, language can be a barrier and it is a small city, so fewer options. There are more waitressing, restaurant, and such jobs than your course-related ones. The payout, though, is not bad and can help you manage expenses.

A stressful but worth it experience.
Tips: It was pretty difficult with the weather and the course was very mathematical and technical, so it was pretty tough to cope. The classes go above your head, but with adequate discipline, one can manage them. The country is somewhat unwelcoming at the beginning but then you have to socialise and understand the shift.
Likes (Value for money): The education is of high quality. The M.Sc. teaches what most universities can't offer. I have compared the course curriculum and I believe mine offered the best as well. The technical understanding you sound in the field and the work you put in, is worth it.
Dislikes (Internships): The possibility of finding one is very difficult despite a job fair being organised. The market is also keen on you knowing good German at least B2. Finding a position is tough. There are many positions but it's always tough to get one. You should try to apply as early and as much.

Tips: It's easier if you learn German to connect with local. I got the Stibet scholarship. Usually, it's possible to get when doing a masters thesis. The university is great. Some departments have very high standards and it's difficult to connect with them unless you do exceptional work.
Likes (Public transportation): The campus is well connected and the city is small. Student dorms can connect to the campus within 30 minutes. It's possible to find many accommodations around the city specifically for students. Usually the programme helps u find one for 2 to 3 years. Post that you need to find your own.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): The market is a little tough. Usually you can do a research assistant quite easily where u did a thesis but it requires a little luck to get hire. Job roles in QA RF engineering, Digital comms and embedded systems and AI can open up but you need to do more apart from a Masters.

Study at an interdisciplinary research focused university.
Tips: Students should learn basic life skills like cooking before starting their international studies, as it helps a lot with proper nutrition and health during the time of studies. Eating out is a difficult option as food outside is expensive. One can avail scholarships like Deutschstipendium and DAAD stipendium scholarships, however it will partially help with living expenses as it is around 250-300 per month. The university is good with a focus on interdisciplinary research.
Likes (Public transportation): The campus is directly connected to the city with both bus and tram options. Public transport is really good in this mid size tier 2 city. A monthly subscription called the Deutschland ticket grants you access to all public transportation systems in the entire country including Local Trains, Bus, Trams and Metro.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Germany's economy has been stagnant for the last 2 years with little signs of recovery and due to the language barrier recruitment of foreign students with littleor no German skills is below average. Students with good technical skills letters of recommendation and atleast B1 German skills can get a job with a salary of around 55000 to 60000.

Mixed emotions, but truly endeavoring experience.
Tips: I recommend all the students who are interested in joining Ul university to be really good at German or the struggle is real at the end of the day. There typically would be no time for one to learn language skills after coming to Ulm, as the academics and part time really take up your time. People intend to earn money and I see a lot of students really forget about studies after seeing a lot of possibilities for money with part time but it doesn't help in the long run.
Likes (Student Life): There are many prospects for students, the international experience, getting to know individuals from different countries, networking, cross cultural experience, all of these are good for work in the long run. You get to know how things are run in different parts of the world. Your communication has improved. Many clubs exist in the university and many events to participate in and socialize.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Most companies do, getting the contact is the tougher part. Once that is received, it's a cakewalk for visas being sponsored. The packages really depend on the skills that one holds and the language knowledge one really has, in my opinion, knowing German really matters no matter how good a skill holder you are.

Best for academics, safe and student friendly.
Tips: The Germans are much reserved type of people but once you speak German, they are quite welcoming. Also, I got two scholarships during my uni tenure - Deutschland Stipendium and Baden Württemberg scholarship, each giving 300 and 650 monthly for a year. The course is excellent, the university is good and I love Germany.
Likes (Safety): Ulm is a very safe, student friendly city. Have been partying till 3 am and many girl colleagues have also said it’s quite safe. Also, public transport is very well designed and effective. I never had any bad experience in the city. Just one thing, Germans work slowly as they still follow paperwork systems in administrative work.
Dislikes (Part time work): Part time jobs or HiWi jobs are available at university. Off campus jobs are also there in the city. Part time work can be managed quite well with studies. The average payout is generally 14 per hour in the city. However, at university you can get up to 15 per hour.

Fun student life but difficult to integrate in Germany.
Tips: It’s in an isolated part of Germany, so be aware of loneliness.
Has tuition fees that don’t seem worth it for the study offered.
There are beautiful hostel that gives you access to Germany's pristine countryside.
The public transport is exceptional.
Likes (Internships): They give a lot of freedom to take a semester break and offer internship programs around the university campus that the students can take and are highly relevant. The fact that the university is located in Baden Wurttemberg means a high probability of getting internships in major cities like Stuttgart, Munich, etc.
Dislikes (Value for money): It’s a German university that requires fees for only international students. It’s best to choose the best alternative that meets your financial and academic needs. The job aspects of my course aren’t as high as in other countries.

Life in Paderborn - Boon or Bane?
Tips: Look, if your ultimate goal is to skip out on theory and instantly land a cushy corporate job in the tech industry, the University of Paderborn is probably going to disappoint you. This place is an absolute research powerhouse. If you are trying to set yourself up for a PhD or dive deep into advanced Computer Science academia, it is easily one of the top institutions in Germany. But for a straightforward corporate route, it’s a tough match.
The city of Paderborn itself is small, scenic, and cozy, but you need to know that English will only get you so far here. The local community speaks very little English, so coming here without learning German beforehand is basically setting yourself up for a massive communication barrier. Knowing the language is also your only real ticket to building a solid social circle on campus, which can be tough since the vibe isn't the best fit if you're socially anxious. The academic side is nothing short of brutal. The course structures are incredibly tough, the workload is heavy and passing your exams is never going to be a walk in the park. If you think you can just breeze through with minimum effort to clear your papers, you're in for a rough time. Your grades and performance directly dictate whether you get a look-in for a research assistant position, a decent master's thesis topic, or a solid academic role later. It is a grueling, uphill climb on a very hilly campus—but if you have a strong head on your shoulders and actually want a heavy intellectual challenge, completing a master's degree here feels incredibly rewarding.

Tips: Connect with people who are coming along with you. Get your doubts cleared with senior students. Understand the course structure and plan things in advance. I am satisfied with my university and the course. I got to do technical part-time jobs, and that was the best part.
Likes (Student Life): The student communities are good. Lots of events take place regularly. Students enjoy themselves a lot and build connections. I was part of the Indian community; it was fun. We organize a Diwali event and intercultural events every year. Also, other gatherings. One of the best Indian communities in Germany.
Dislikes (Internships): The course does not have a mandatory internship option. Getting voluntary internships is a bit difficult in comparison. Although there are opportunities for technical part-time jobs. Planning things in advance usually helps a lot. I would recommend a part-time job instead of an internship.

A Great University for Learning, Research, and Career Growth
Tips: If you're coming to Paderborn for Computer Science, you need to lose the expectation that professors are going to hold your hand. The independent learning curve here hits you like a truck, and if you aren't self-motivated to grind through the heavy theory and coding assignments on your own, you’ll fall behind fast. Also, don't buy into the myth that you can totally get away with just English. Sure, the CS modules are taught in English, but trying to navigate the local supermarket, deal with the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners office), or land a decent part-time gig without basic German is a massive headache.
Financially, scholarships are incredibly rare, so don't count on them. I had to pay for literally everything myself by working HiWi gigs on campus and scraping together random part-time jobs. Start hunting for open slots the day you arrive, because every single tech student in Paderborn is fighting for the exact same roles. Living here is a major cultural adjustment—the German obsession with planning everything weeks in advance and their strict respect for personal space can feel pretty cold at first. Likes (Safety): I gave safety a 4 because Paderborn is honestly just a super quiet, low-crime town. Since it’s on the smaller side, it doesn’t have that overwhelming, chaotic vibe of a massive city. You can walk back to your apartment from campus at midnight without feeling sketchy at all, and you barely see any trouble. The local cops are actually pretty efficient and show up fast if there’s a problem. Honestly, I haven't run into a single sketchy situation the entire time I've lived here.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Since Paderborn is a pretty small student town, it completely lacks the massive, cheap food scene you get in bigger student hubs like Aachen or Göttingen. That's exactly why I gave the Indian food options a low 2-star rating. Honestly, if you want a decent taste of home, a basic meal at the few Indian spots in town will easily run you 16 to 20 euros a head, which completely destroys a student budget. Because of that, I just cook at home most days and grab my spices from the small local Asian/Indian grocery shops. When I am too lazy to cook and don't want to eat at the campus Mensa, my only cheap options are the endless Döner and falafel pocket joints or quick pizza slices scattered around the center.

Tips: The university is research-oriented. Since there are many students coming to apply for accommodation, you will get an acceptance letter. Apply for a working student job under your faculty. The chances of getting it are high. Try to apply for a thesis as soon as you meet the requirements under the faculty where you did your project, seminar, and more than 3 subjects.
Likes (Safety): It's been 3 years in Paderborn, and I haven't experienced any danger. I can go out alone at 3 am without any worries. It's especially safe for girls. The police are very responsive if there are any issues. I live near the university, so I felt safe.
Dislikes (Internships): We don't have a compulsory internship at our university. If we apply, it will be our volunteer work. If you are willing to do an internship, go ahead, but while applying to a company, ask whether it's compulsory or not. If not, the chances of getting in are lower. So I rated it as 2. Instead, join as a work-student, which is similar to gaining experience.

Tips: Yes, there was a cultural shift for sure, but I would say the transition was rather smooth. There is a large Indian community here who are all very helpful, and they made my early days quite easy. No, I didn't get any scholarship. I would say I am very satisfied with my choices for my university, course, and country. One thing that I would suggest to others looking to come to Germany is to try and invest more time learning the German language, as that's what helps you immensely in your day-to-day life, and I would say it has a heavy impact when it comes to looking for full-time job roles, as they do filter out candidates based on their German language proficiency.
Likes (Indian Food): There are 2-3 Indian restaurants in the city; also, there's a store called SNS that sells Indian spices and other food items, so one has access to everything needed to be able to cook the same meals that they did back home. I prefer cooking myself.
Dislikes (Internships): I knocked the rating down because Paderborn doesn’t really have big MNCs or tech companies partnering directly with the uni to hand out internships. You're basically left on your own to hunt for roles, send out cold applications, and handle the whole job search yourself. The one saving grace, though, is that we have the Fraunhofer research institute sitting right on the same campus. For a computer science student, that is huge because a ton of us end up landing working student positions (Werkstudent) over there. So while industry connections from the uni side are pretty lacking, having a massive research hub next door gives you a solid backup option to get experience.

Likes (Value for money): Because it is a public university, it is completely tuition-free for international students. There is only a minor semester contribution fee required, which is incredibly valuable since it fully covers the cost of public transportation across the entire region in Germany. This makes the overall return on investment exceptional for anyone studying on a student budget.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Most restaurants serve very limited Indian food options, and the authentic taste is often missing. Because of this, I usually prefer to cook my own meals at home. Eating out frequently is also quite expensive and not sustainable for a student budget on a daily basis.

Likes (Public transportation): Paderborn city is small and well-connected by public transportation. The university is quite centrally located. The ticket is included in the semester contribution. The Deutschland ticket can be used to travel anywhere in Germany for local buses and trains.
Dislikes (Internships): It is difficult to apply for internships in the companies near the university since internships are not mandatory. The companies prefer students who need mandatory internships for completion of their course. Not many companies are located in Paderborn. You will have to travel to bigger cities for student jobs and internships.

Tips: Just a heads up, the local food and how insanely strict the rules are out here will probably give you a massive culture shock at first. It's definitely a weird adjustment, but you honestly get used to the whole vibe faster than you think. It takes a little time to get used to, but honestly, it’s not that bad because there are a ton of Indian restaurants and grocery shops right around the corner from campus. Having those nearby makes it super easy to grab a familiar meal or track down home ingredients whenever you start feeling homesick, which completely saves you during your first few months. Also, the main difference is how we behave in a public space, like speaking friendly or loudly might be normal, but here you should respect other people's personal space. 2. I did not avail myself of any scholarship. 3. The university is awesome; my course was completely English-taught, so I did not face any difficulties, and the teaching staff is supportive.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): The city is quite small and friendly, so in case you want to settle permanently, the rent is cheaper than compared to other big cities. Also, the commute to other parts is really good. There is no hassle with the immigration office or the appointments.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Generally, you don't need a company to provide you any kind of sponsor document; you can get the work visa or the blue card based on your job contact. The main jobs are all IT or computer science-related. Companies offer around 40K-55K Euro based on your position and experience.

Tips: The university itself is really good in terms of studies, but it is the job scenario that anyone should be careful of. Any courses that are being offered are really great compared to India, where you might not get this much detailed studies and won't learn what you can learn here.
Likes (Safety): Paderborn city itself is one of the safest cities compared to other metropolitan cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt or Munich. I personally never heard about anyone getting discriminated against or being harassed in here. These things are not that common here.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): I saw my friends completing their master's and still not getting jobs for 1 or even 2 years. I mean, eventually you will get a job, but be prepared to do some odd jobs even after studying, as it is not guaranteed that you will get a job when you just finish.

Dislikes (Student Life): The course structure is demanding. There are many assignments and the subjects are challenging. Students need to dedicate a lot of time to studying, completing one subject per semester over four years. I wouldn't recommend this university if you're looking to enjoy and travel. While you can make friends and participate in events completing a Master's degree might be difficult.

Many medium and large companies in Germany offer visa sponsorship especially in the IT automotive and finance sectors but not all small companies do. Typical roles include Software Developer, Data Analyst, Electrical Engineer and Business Analyst. Starting salaries typically range from 45,000 to 60,000 euros per year depending on position and experience.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are very limited options for food from my home country. Even when available, the taste is not authentic, and the quality is inconsistent. There are mostly German, Italian and Turkish restaurants nearby. Prices vary: Budget options, such as Doner and Pizza, cost around 5-10 euros, mid-range options, such as Pasta, Schnitzel, are 10-20 euros, and higher-end places are 25 euros and above. I prefer cooking at home. It's more affordable, and I can prepare food that tastes closer to what I'm used to.

Interesting learning experience, but not easy.
Tips: The courses are not extremely difficult, but it's also not possible to pass without putting in any effort. You have to work pretty hard to get very good grades. A major positive change is that I am no longer afraid of speaking up and asking questions during lectures. The professors were very encouraging and receptive to even the most minor doubts. Most of the internship opportunities I've found are from the career fair on campus, rather than the student jobs portal. The career fair is hosted once or twice a year on campus. Also, I've had some luck finding internships on LinkedIn. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my experiences.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Most of the professors I’ve interacted with are very approachable and passionate about the subjects they teach. I found almost all of the courses I attended to be very interesting. However, the professors also have high expectations, so be sure to attend the first few lectures to see if the course is the right fit for you.
