Theoretical, Prestigious, opportunities
Tips: I would suggest choosing the University more for its location, being in a big city offers you more opportunities and more international opportunities. University of Cologne is very difficult to get into and has a big name, but the courses are heavily academically oriented and sometimes lack the practical depth required in the job market. But the location is golden, Ku00f6ln, Du00fcsseldorf and Bonn have a huge number of Job opportunities and are very friendly and good for international students.
Likes (Safety): I think you can access most public spaces safely, even at night around the campus. I have not faced any form of discrimination at the campus or at the University as a person of colour. Secondly, as a woman, I have accessed the library at night and come home completely safe.
Dislikes (Value for money): The course was very theoretical and less practical. If you are taking an academic loan and indebting yourself for this course, in my honest opinion, it is not worth it. I studied on a full scholarship, that is why it worked out, but if I had to pay out of my own pocket, I am not sure if I would be comfortable doing it.

Good education but not fitting exactly into job market
Tips: German culture is quite different; they are more introverted than Indian students, but they are still kind in most cases, at least in my study program. They are not as welcoming as Indians. No scholarships. Satisfied with university but could have offered or tried more in terms of placements.
Likes (Value for money): Yes, it is extremely low considering the standard of education. There is definitely a lot of effort put into improving the quality of education on a regular basis. The only issue is that the coursework doesn't directly match jobs outside academia.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I usually prefer cooking for myself. Indian food here generally costs around 15 euros or more per main dish at least, and they taste mediocre. I think I make better food, and it's cheaper and healthier to eat at home. If I eat out, it's only because I'm too tired or craving something specific.

The cities are quite safe and friendly in Germany.
Tips: There are plenty of difference cultural, however it is not vast in the big cities. The BCGS scholarship is the best for Physics students coming to Bonn and Cologne. I am quite satisfied with the course and in general, I like Germany as well however finding full time jobs in 2026 is not easy. You should be aware of this.
Likes (Safety): In Germany the cities are quite safe and friendly, and the campus is open; in fact you can choose to go sit in any given class. Outside the university, most of the time it is safe, but in big cities like every part of the world, there are pretty crimes. I felt safe for the most part.
Dislikes (Internships): Finding internships is something that the college may help with only a little, as there is no placement cell, etc. However, there are possibilities to look for internships through friends and referrals, which is the best case scenario, and always try looking for connections.

University of Cologne is academically oriented.
Tips: Germans are very cold and serious. I didn't have any scholarship. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with my experience. Job market in Germany is good, but not for non German speakers. Professors and the university staff are usually very friendly and polite. It is better to learn German to better fit into the society.
Likes (Value for money): As it is super cheap compared to British or Irish or USA universities. German universities cost around 1k or 2k per year only. So it is great for value for money. However, not speaking Germany is hard for finding a job and living in Germany. Therefore up to you.
Dislikes (Part time work): Unfortunately I joined during covid so we could not experience part time work or seminars, or any online activities. We did not have the opportunity to experience ordinary student life due to the pandemic. But maybe now it should be better. Most of our classes were offline.

hard & stressful research and academia but worth it
Tips: It's stressful, at least for Bachelor's. If you cannot handle a hard course, don't come cultural its a normal German university. You won't know anyone. You just study and leave there are scholarships, but super hard to get, like the Deutschlandstipendium. I would say, on the basis of the university, course, and country, it's a 7.5/10.
Likes (Post study jobs): Alot of people don't know but Karlsruhe is a industrial giants of germany, it is in southern germany which is known for manufacturing and it has 100s of headquarters of companies and industries and due to initial barrier of 1500 euros per semester tuition feels by the state, the competition is drastically lower than those studying in states with little to no semester feels also KIT is a only hyperscale research university and a technical university combined in whole of germany, generally in germany research and teaching are done by different institutions but here its KIT does everything so there is alot of opportunities in being research assistant to professors and thesis people.
Dislikes (Student Life): It has a massive class size, generally, you just enter the hall, study, and leave. You will most likely not know more than 3 people in the entire study, and the city itself is really small, so there's not much happening. The max you have here is the semester opening parties, and that's it.

One of the best colleges that Germany can offer, especially research oriented.
Tips: Definitely the language barrier; it is really difficult without knowledge of German. The exam period is super stressful, so starting your preparation right from the classes start is quite important. If I'm not wrong, only the Deutschland Merit Scholarship is available, but it's quite competitive to get. I set up a blocked account for the first year, but you will be able to get student assistant jobs (HiWi), which will be sufficient to manage your expenses.
Likes (Safety): The city is super student-friendly and pretty safe, the student dorms are pretty safe too, overall. Recently, I came across an issue of robbery in one of the student dorms, but that's super, super rare. I have been living here for over a year now, and compared to other cities in Germany, Karlsruhe is one of the safest.
Dislikes (Internships): Finding internships is pretty hard, especially if you are not comfortable with German. Nothing is spoon-fed, so you will have to put in all the effort to find one, guidance such as cover letter and CV prep is provided, though. There are plenty of internships available, but most of them require German or prefer students who must do an internship.

Beyond the lectures. Life at KIT
Tips: No prerequisites, but you should be familiar with German culture. At our time, there was no entrance exam for the college, but now they have mandated the GRE and an entrance examination. I am very much satisfied with the course offered here at kit that too in English.
Likes (Student Life): It's a very good city for the student to live in. KIT offers learning from experienced professors, exploring different domains. Life here is a little demanding academically, lectures, assignments, part time. KIT also offers dynamic opportunities to build communication to get involved in student activities and cultural activities.
Dislikes (Internships): There is a good chance of getting internship if you search properly. And sometimes you will get internships not related to your field but you can always build connections that will help you in future. You can always go through the platform like linkedin and some other Germany specific to find Internships and part time.

Excellent Research Oriented Education with Strong Faculty and Global Exposure.
Tips: Coming to KIT, one thing I'd tell any student is this: be ready to learn on your own. There's no spoon-feeding here. The academic environment is genuinely tough, and professors expect you to take charge of your own progress instead of waiting to be taught everything step by step.
Honestly, moving from India wasn't easy at first. The food took some getting used to, the culture felt different in small ways I hadn't expected, and there were days I really missed home and family. Classes here work differently too — you're expected to speak up, question things, argue your point if you disagree, and basically run your own schedule without anyone reminding you. Little things, like how people communicate or what's considered "normal" daily life, took some adjusting to as well. But KIT's student body is incredibly international, so you're never really alone in figuring things out — there's always someone from another country going through the same thing, and that makes a huge difference.
On the scholarship side, my honest advice is: don't wait. Start looking early because funding in Germany is competitive, and the good ones fill up fast. I'm currently on the Deutschlandstipendium myself, which gives 300 euros a month. There are other options floating around too, so it's worth digging through them and seeing what you actually qualify for.
Looking back, I'd say my time at KIT has been genuinely worth it. The Mechanical Engineering program has given me real exposure — both academically and through research — and being in Germany adds another layer, since you're close to some serious engineering and industry work. Just go in knowing it's demanding. Between coursework, managing daily life, and maybe juggling a part-time job, you'll need to stay organized and a little stubborn about your goals.
Likes (Safety): KIT provides a balanced life where you have academic, social, and personal growth, and that is why I rated it 5. Being a Mechanical Engineering student at KIT, my everyday routine involves lectures, tutorials, assignments, project work, HiWi jobs (student assistants in the projects being carried out in the department), independent studies, and much more. The best part about the studies here is the blend of academic discipline and interaction with other students from different countries. KIT constantly organizes student parties, cultural activities, sports activities, career fairs, workshops, introductory activities, research, and much more. All my interests lie in the social and cultural activities because it gives us an opportunity to make friends and relax from the academic disciplines. There are plenty of student communities at KIT, ranging from sports, music, culture, entrepreneurship, technology, international students' activities, and much more. It's easier for students with various interests to join any community that matches their interests. I particularly like the international student community that organizes a buddy programme comprising activities such as Trips, hiking, run club, tech events, board games, and much more.

Greatly technology orientated if you into technology then just join it
Tips: There are ups and downs in life, you just need to stay strong, and everything is gonna be the best. Just have this mentality, and it's gonna be fine. Here, there is a concept of working students, which is like working in the company during your studies, and ya I did that. I am fully satisfied with the university multi culture people and great opportunities.
Likes (Part time work): I wake up in the morning do some exercises morning walks or jogging then I visit my university lectures and part time job, and then I look into the university home work, in the evening I just read some novels and then sleep. At the university, we have a university fest every year nice way to connect with people, and the orientation phase is also important.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Just one email away from getting a reply if you have any doubts. At university, we use slides, and you can bring your laptops and code in the lectures, and there are also Menti meters, which are quizzes in between the really fun classes. The teaching faculty are from different countries.

Research-focused University with state-of-the-art ongoing researches
Tips: The city or nearby regions have a very tight housing situation. You most likely feel very stressed due to your assignments and lonely due to very little interaction with other people, and you would find it very difficult to make friends compared to Indian regions.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty is top-notch, with research focused. They are always welcoming and nice to discuss any of the topics you find challenging. They reply to your emails almost always. They encourage you to research and work with them on hard problems, so if you are into deep research, the professors will help you with problems related to your thesis.
Dislikes (Part time work): Rated low due to a lack of English-speaking part-time jobs. The number of jobs is good, but most of those are consultancies that require German language knowledge. Since the university is research-focused, you get very workload-heavy assignments causing less time for part-time opportunities, which also demand regular meetings, as consultancy firms do.

excellent research-oriented university with strong academic opportunities
Tips: KIT is highly research- and application-oriented, rather than based on memorising answers, as is often experienced in the Indian education system. At the Master's level, there is very little spoon-feeding, so the initial transition can be challenging. The transition initially takes some time, however, with time, you adapt to the academic environment and learn to manage your studies and responsibilities independently. KIT offers various scholarship and financial-support opportunities for international students, including a stipend.
Likes (Value for money): Despite the relatively high tuition fees, I believe the quality of education at KIT makes the investment worthwhile. As a non-EU student, I pay u20ac1700 per semester out of which u20ac1500 is a state-imposed fee for non-EU students. Personally, I feel the tuition fee could be lower, ideally below u20ac1000 per semester, as the current amount makes studying more expensive.
Dislikes (Public transportation): From my point of view on public transport, it got 3 stars out of 5 due to the fact that KVV offers quite a decent public transport network through which one can move around the city and its suburbs without having his or her own car. Nevertheless, it is also a fact that the process is not always stable owing to various problems.

Tips: I was there for my exchange programme to do my thesis, so I didn't take any courses, but I had friends who were doing a Bachelor's. With the current situation, it's not very easy to find internships, and it can get stressful if you have taken out a loan. I was getting a DAAD scholarship of around 1000 euros per month, so that is enough, but it depends on your lifestyle and the apartment rent, which can be high. It's a very good city to live in. The tuition fee for international students is high for a Master's, but I was on exchange, so I didn't have to pay any.

Why KIT was a great experience, and how it prepared me as an Engineer for life after graduation.
Tips: The student body is very diverse; hence, it becomes easy to adapt and not many cases of discrimination occur. The cost of my course was around 1700 euros per semester, and there are no scholarships available (neither need- nor merit-based). I am fully satisfied with the institution because of its excellent reputation in Europe in terms of Chemical & Mechanical Engineering, and the country because of its very useful industry linkages (particularly with Mercedes-Benz owing to partial sponsorship by the Carl Benz Foundation).

KIT is a bit stressful but a fun university.
Tips: This college is very academically rigorous, and everyone fails one or the other course at least once, but there are retests for all courses. It is recommended to complete this course in 3 years, but most people end up taking around 4 years. Make sure to join some student club or organization and get practical experience along with studying because people who offer jobs don't really focus on grades if you have passed, but on your experience and skills.
Likes (Post study jobs): I have not completed my studies yet but I have seen career fair in my university and a lot of students get jobs in big automobile companies like Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, etc. Some people also pursue master's degrees, either at KIT or some other university (I have heard of a lot of students going to ETH Zurich).
Dislikes (Part time work): I personally found it a bit difficult to find part-time work while studying, as there is very high competition here and very good proficiency in German is required in most places. Most people try to find part-time work in the university itself, as it fits well with the study schedule.

Tips: Before coming to KIT, you need to be prepared for how notoriously tough the academics are. KIT is an absolute powerhouse for engineering and computer science, but they don't hold your hand at all. The exam period (Klausurenphase) here is intense—you'll spend weeks glued to a desk in the KIT Library (KIT-Bib) or the AKK studying past papers (Altklausuren). The failure rates on first-year weed-out exams can be intimidating, so developing strong study habits from week one isn't just advice; it's survival.
Don't try to go through it alone. Joining a Fachschaft (student council for your department), forming study groups (Lerngruppen), and actually going to office hours (Sprechstunden) will save your grades. Outside of lectures, make time to drop by student clubs or grab a cheap beer at the AKK on campus to decompress. If you come in ready to work hard, manage your time, and lean on your classmates, a degree from KIT opens huge doors—but you definitely have to earn it.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): I gave permanent residence a 3/5 because while the legal roadmap on paper looks straightforward for KIT STEM graduates, navigating the actual administrative process in Karlsruhe is a huge test of patience. The rules sound simple enough—get a job tied to your degree, pay into public pension insurance (Rentenversicherung) for 21 to 27 months, and prove B1/B2 German proficiency.
The real nightmare is dealing with the local Ausländerbehörde. Getting appointments, processing visa extensions, or converting your post-study visa into a Blue Card or PR takes months of waiting and radio silence.
If you work in IT or software engineering around Karlsruhe or the broader CyberForum network, landing a qualifying role isn't the problem. The hurdle is purely bureaucratic: keeping a steady contract, racking up those mandatory monthly pension payments without gaps, and handling endless paperwork in formal German. The long-term quality of life and work-life balance here are great once you're fully settled, but reaching permanent residency feels less like a smooth pathway and more like an administrative obstacle course.

Best university life I had
Tips: Moving out here definitely brought a bit of a culture shock at first, but honestly, it’s been pretty easy to get used to. I actually landed a couple of scholarships too, which took a massive weight off my shoulders. When it comes to the actual studies at KIT, I'm seriously happy with my course and how the university runs things.
Karlsruhe itself is an amazing city to live in as a student, and the overall quality of life is great. There are a ton of cool spots and attractions right nearby—like hanging out at the Schloss gardens—and the entire region has a really vibrant, international vibe with people from all over the place. Plus, because Karlsruhe is such a major tech hub, the local job market is solid, so finding good working student roles or internships actually feels doable.

Great campus and very amicable staffs and professors.
Tips: Before joining this college, students should know that knowing German up to the B1 level will be an advantage. Scholarships are available for women, and students get a lot of things at a discounted rate, including insurance and travel. I personally like Germany and its work culture, and everything here is a piece of cake if you know German. However, the top preference will be for German-speaking people with at least B1 level German.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The professors provide excellent guidance and use well-equipped teaching strategies. They are very understanding and very liberal. They are very involved in the students' calibre and are great mentors. They have a really cool structured program for a better understanding. So far, I have no complaints.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Indian restaurants are a bit too expensive, especially for students who are working part-time and trying to manage their expenses. Turkish takeaway is a better option for students, or you can eat at franchises like McDonald's. Learning to cook for yourself is the best option.

Tips: The tuition fees for all the international students in all the universities in Baden-Württemberg state of Germany is 1500 Euros at least. Knowing German language would be extremely helpful to connect with other students, but living in Karlsruhe without knowing German is also possible. Everyone at the Bürgerbüro can speak English and a lot of shopkeepers do it too.
Likes (Post study jobs): KIT has a very good reputation among everyone and the employers in Germany. Mechanical Engineering and Informatics are two of the most popular programs here and after successfully getting the degree, getting a job at a company like Mercedes Benz or Siemens is relatively easy.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The free public transport zone included for students here is not as big compared to other cities in Germany, and public transport is only accessible for free from 6pm-6am every weekend. It is available for free on every holiday. But the quality of transport is very good. A network of bus and trains is provided for a pretty good range of travel, even upto a French city called Lauterbourg.
