University of Göttingen - Just where an ambitious student needs to be!
Tips: Yes, this city has affected me in so many ways. First of all, everyone loves rules here. No breaking laws, especially traffic rules and cleanliness Learning German is a necessity for entering the job market. Professors will guide you and help you a lot. Yes, there are scholarships available. I am quite satisfied.
Likes (Safety): Göttingen is a student city, so everyone here is friendly, kind, and understands English, for starters. There is a strict police department for any crimes The only problem is the commute during late hours, so one has to be prepared for that. It's advisable to not roam alone in the city after midnight.
Dislikes (Internships): I rated internships low because out here in Göttingen, your actual technical skills completely take a backseat to the German language. It’s the ultimate gatekeeper. Look, the university tries to help by putting on career fairs, running workshops, and offering career services, but honestly, all of that becomes pretty useless if you aren't fluent. When it comes down to actual hiring, companies only care if you can communicate with their clients in German. You could be an absolute genius at your subject, but the moment a role requires client interaction, you're locked out if you only speak English. It makes the job hunt incredibly frustrating because language skills end up mattering way more than your actual academic talent.

Quality Education in a Student-Friendly Environment
Tips: The biggest thing you need to realize before coming to Göttingen is that the university leaves you completely to your own devices. It’s entirely independent learning, so if your time management is messy, you’re going to struggle hard. Academically, the transition isn't terrible because the course is super flexible and research-focused, and the professors really know their stuff, but the actual culture shock is the real hurdle. People here are brutally direct, hyper-punctual, and obsessed with rules, which is a massive shift from home.
Also, do yourself a massive favor and learn basic German before you get here. It makes everyday life ten times easier, and honestly, trying to land part-time work or a decent internship without it is nearly impossible. On the financial side, I didn't get any scholarships, so I’m funding everything out of my own pocket. Because of that, I’ve been hunting hard for HiWi positions on campus and local internships just to cover my daily expenses and get some solid experience on my CV. Germany as a whole is awesome for cheap education and great transit, but your entire experience here hinges on how well you adapt and learn the language.

Tips: If you're looking at Göttingen, the biggest reality check is that the academic system here is intensely research-driven and almost completely hands-off. You aren't going to have professors holding your hand through the coursework. If you don't have the self-discipline to manage your own time and stay on top of the reading, the intensive workload will bury you before finals even hit. The upside is that the program structure is incredibly flexible, so you actually have the freedom to steer the degree toward whatever specific niche you're interested in. Plus, living in a proper, historic student town like Göttingen is an amazing experience for international students. Germany as a whole offers a top-tier education system, and as long as you're willing to put in the work independently, the career opportunities down the line make the grind totally worth it.

Tips: For my course I'd say it's a pretty intense research oriented course. You cannot skip and skim through lectures and do last minute preparations. You have to prepare for exams like a junior researcher working in your lecturers lab, as the questions will be application-oriented in their specialized topics. It's one of the best college towns you can live in as a student. It's a small town and everybody knows everyone. Personally I love the walkability around the town and love the Deutschland ticket. When I feel like side-questing in life, Germany has wonderful, beautiful small villages that take me out of academic stress.

There are not many industries located in Göttingen.
Tips: University of Göttingen has been a great experience for me so far. The wide variety of international exposure with people from all over the world has helped me a lot in shaping me both academically and personally. The international office at the university has been pretty friendly as they help you initially in settling down and help with all the administrative stuff like city registration and housing. The cultural shift can feel quite huge at first, but the transition was smooth. Most of the people in Göttingen speak English and are quite helpful which makes day to day life a lot easier. I was not fortunate enough to receive a scholarship but I managed to get some part time jobs which I balanced along with my studies and helped for the entire duration of my stay here in Göttingen. Part-time opportunities are very common, especially in universities or Max Planck institutes which provide a unique opportunity to learn alongside earning. I would highly rate the university especially for the course, as it provides too much flexibility where I can pursue my own interests and choose subjects on my own. Germany provides a good platform for starting and building a career in Bioinformatics. I am highly satisfied with the course and the opportunity that the university provides, which align perfectly with my interests and motivation.
Likes (Public transportation): The city is well connected by buses. The buses are clean and frequent. They are quite affordable and convenient. Along with the university registration we get a Deutschland ticket, where one can take an unlimited number of rides through the city bus lines. The city is also well connected by train services, both high-speed (ICE) and regional trains.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Post study jobs are a bit tricky in Gottingen. There are not many industries located in Göttingen for the job roles especially for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. However there are some good companies like Evotec and Sartorius that offer some permanent positions. There are some jobs in the University Medical Centre, Max Planck Institute. They offer various roles like Research assistant, Bioinformatician or research scientist.

It's one of the best places to study in Germany for a student.
Tips: The city is very student friendly with a huge multiethnic international student body. The faculty is varied and very big, especially for life sciences. There's a very active student association, a sizeable amount of student accommodation options as well.
Likes (Indian Food): There are a lot of good Indian restaurants that are spread out all over the town. Some offer student discounts. The quality of food is very good, and in most places nearly the same as what you'd get back home in terms of flavour. The prices are comparatively reasonable.
Dislikes (Internships): The internship market here is very saturated for most streams. Although you can land internships, those will mostly be academic. An industry or a hybrid internship is very competitive. Fluent German is almost a default expectation and non-German speakers will struggle even more.

Tips: To be prepared for the course according to the European education system and not the Indian system. To not mug up things and write but to understand everything with a practical perspective. Most important is to interact with others, make friends and blend in with how others do.

Tips: Göttingen is known as a university city, so it's full of students which offers you many opportunities in many ways, in terms of making new international friends and joining different study clubs or organisations, etc. People from this city are not very conservative, and you can easily adapt to the culture and people over here. Due to the many universities, the number of students (youth) is more so it makes a big difference in making your cultural difference wide, as there are many international students and also students from different parts of Germany. Talking about scholarship, personally, I didn't receive any scholarship. But one can apply for Deutschland stipendium or Niedersachsen stipendium. I'm pretty much satisfied with this university in terms of academia, however I feel a lack of cultural events or inter department competitions. I'm loving the student life in Germany, as you can develop many skills, grow yourself more, deepen your knowledge in your area of interest, and at the same time can earn money by doing part time or mini jobs.
Likes (Quality of faculty): All faculty members in every department are very experienced and experts in their own field. They are very friendly and humble, always open to discussions and clarifying our doubts. Talking about particularly my field, we have lectures from experts in the field which make the whole module way more informative and give deep insights into that topic. Our teaching faculty members are from different nationalities, and I would say it's pretty much diverse.
Dislikes (Public transportation): As this city is relatively smaller than other cities, there are only bus options, whereas other cities have trams, ubahn, Sbahn, metro, etc. Even though each part of the city is well connected to each other, due to less options of transport it takes quite a long time to reach shorter distances. For students, we get a Deutschland ticket so we don't have to pay anything for any transportation.

Transformation and learning something new.
Tips: You will see cultural differences but you will get adjusted. It's best if you know how to cook for your meals. If your course requires you to finish a certain level of German or English level try to finish and submit it as soon as you can. You will have stress free time during university. I love my university and all the students and professors are pretty cool.
Likes (Safety): I have travelled and have walked around at midnight. It's a pretty safe and friendly small city and less tourists. There is an international office where you can go and talk about your difficulties and they actually care and try to help you out. The city is quite peaceful.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): Faculty are good. But for my course, I see them for two to three classes and I don't see them again but you can always contact them through email. And I really love how we get hands on experience in the wed labs and exposure to different labs in the city.

Tips: I think there's a shift in mindset when one moves abroad and develops a network of people from different countries. This helps broaden perspectives. The DAAD scholarship gives 800 euros per month as well as round flight tickets and health insurance. I would definitely recommend the University of Gottingen.
Likes (Value for money): The tuition fee is very minimal in public universities in Germany. It was about 250 euros when I was studying there. This "tuition fee" goes towards your public transport allowance, student union membership, as well as subsidised food in the canteens.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Germany is open in terms of visa access. It is very difficult to get a job if you do not have native fluency in German and do not have a local network to help you get jobs. There is also a growing anti-immigrant sentiment. Germany is great to live in for a few years and get a good education. But permanent immigration opportunities are a bit difficult to come across.

Life in Germany: A quiet world.
Tips: The cultural shift is something huge that I had to go through. It is very quiet here which was definitely a surprise to me. But the course coordinator was more than welcoming to us and made the local bureaucracy very easy. The course is really good and prepares everyone for the outer world.
Likes (Value for money): For my course, there was a stipend that every student received each month. This stipend is enough to cover the insurance and the living costs. It was also covered by travel expenses when I went around Europe and also back home. The university also increased the stipend once due to inflation and it helped.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are a lot of Indian restaurants but the food is really Europeanized and hence doesn't really taste like it does back home. The prices are okay ish one meal can be somewhere around 20 euros now. I like to cook food and hence prefer eating inside only.

Tips: Things students should know before coming here -
Knowledge of the German language is crucial, even if your course is in English. Acclimating to a new culture takes time. Germans can be different from Indians; they're less social and follow rules to an immense degree. Niedersachsen scholarship and the Deutschlandstipendium are available for students. Overall, I am satisfied with my experiences.
Likes (Value for money): There are no tuition fees because the University of Göttingen (also known as The Georg-August University) is a public university. Public universities do not charge tuition. Students need to cover accommodation, health insurance, and living expenses. Groceries cost roughly 180-200 euros a month. Statutory health insurance is 144 euros, and the average rent is 300 euros. Public transport is free.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): There is a finding work visa available after graduation which is quite helpful. Germany is generally pro immigrant making it easier to settle here. However it's important to note that German language proficiency is crucial for this. I would like to immigrate permanently if given the opportunity.

A place for quality distance learning for professional and personal growth.
Tips: I have changed from an introvert to an extrovert. There was a cultural shift and I got adjusted to it. Having at least B1 knowledge of the German language is recommended before you go to any University in Germany. I have availed scholarship for my masters' thesis. I spoke with my mentor and he did allow me to get a scholarship for my thesis. It was 1000 Euros per month for 6 months only. Overall, I am satisfied with the course, the university, and the country. I have learned a lot of lessons and traveling to a different place changed me as a whole person and I liked the change.
Likes (Safety): The lawns are very strict there at the University. The police would be patrolling during the night. Lost and found, mental health, and job & student support were the other facilities that were provided for the student's safety. I did not face any bad experiences in the city. I had a good experience as it was a student city.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I studied in a very small town. There were only 3 to 4 Indian restaurants. Out of them only 1 or 2 had affordable pricing as students but still, I could not afford to eat there daily as it would be expensive for a monthly budget. I prefer to cook myself for healthy purposes and due to my expense constraints.

Tips: The transition to the cultural life here was easy. The city is international in its nature with several opportunities for students to interact with students and faculty from all across the world. The Lower Saxony Scholarship and the Germany Scholarship are two options that the students can opt for. Overall, I'm happy with the faculty, the city and the university.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies is absolutely brilliant. Some of the leading figures of labour history at the moment work here. The academic environment is rigorous. We're taught how to discern complex, often inaccessible texts. The faculty is also diverse in its nature, both on the basis of their areas of specialisation and where they come from.
Dislikes (Internships): Regular internship fairs are organised both by the Centre for Modern Indian Studies and the University of Göttingen. Career Planning Workshops and Grant Writing Workshops also take place. The internship opportunities, however, become a bit scarce if you don't speak German. You can get credit transfers for internships or your work experience.

Life in Paderborn - Boon or Bane?
Tips: Look, if your ultimate goal is to skip out on theory and instantly land a cushy corporate job in the tech industry, the University of Paderborn is probably going to disappoint you. This place is an absolute research powerhouse. If you are trying to set yourself up for a PhD or dive deep into advanced Computer Science academia, it is easily one of the top institutions in Germany. But for a straightforward corporate route, it’s a tough match.
The city of Paderborn itself is small, scenic, and cozy, but you need to know that English will only get you so far here. The local community speaks very little English, so coming here without learning German beforehand is basically setting yourself up for a massive communication barrier. Knowing the language is also your only real ticket to building a solid social circle on campus, which can be tough since the vibe isn't the best fit if you're socially anxious. The academic side is nothing short of brutal. The course structures are incredibly tough, the workload is heavy and passing your exams is never going to be a walk in the park. If you think you can just breeze through with minimum effort to clear your papers, you're in for a rough time. Your grades and performance directly dictate whether you get a look-in for a research assistant position, a decent master's thesis topic, or a solid academic role later. It is a grueling, uphill climb on a very hilly campus—but if you have a strong head on your shoulders and actually want a heavy intellectual challenge, completing a master's degree here feels incredibly rewarding.

Tips: Connect with people who are coming along with you. Get your doubts cleared with senior students. Understand the course structure and plan things in advance. I am satisfied with my university and the course. I got to do technical part-time jobs, and that was the best part.
Likes (Student Life): The student communities are good. Lots of events take place regularly. Students enjoy themselves a lot and build connections. I was part of the Indian community; it was fun. We organize a Diwali event and intercultural events every year. Also, other gatherings. One of the best Indian communities in Germany.
Dislikes (Internships): The course does not have a mandatory internship option. Getting voluntary internships is a bit difficult in comparison. Although there are opportunities for technical part-time jobs. Planning things in advance usually helps a lot. I would recommend a part-time job instead of an internship.

A Great University for Learning, Research, and Career Growth
Tips: If you're coming to Paderborn for Computer Science, you need to lose the expectation that professors are going to hold your hand. The independent learning curve here hits you like a truck, and if you aren't self-motivated to grind through the heavy theory and coding assignments on your own, you’ll fall behind fast. Also, don't buy into the myth that you can totally get away with just English. Sure, the CS modules are taught in English, but trying to navigate the local supermarket, deal with the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners office), or land a decent part-time gig without basic German is a massive headache.
Financially, scholarships are incredibly rare, so don't count on them. I had to pay for literally everything myself by working HiWi gigs on campus and scraping together random part-time jobs. Start hunting for open slots the day you arrive, because every single tech student in Paderborn is fighting for the exact same roles. Living here is a major cultural adjustment—the German obsession with planning everything weeks in advance and their strict respect for personal space can feel pretty cold at first. But looking back, I’m totally satisfied with the move. The CS department has serious research backing and deep ties to local tech firms, so if you actually use the labs and network, it’s a solid launchpad for a tech career.
Likes (Safety): I gave safety a 4 because Paderborn is honestly just a super quiet, low-crime town. Since it’s on the smaller side, it doesn’t have that overwhelming, chaotic vibe of a massive city. You can walk back to your apartment from campus at midnight without feeling sketchy at all, and you barely see any trouble. The local cops are actually pretty efficient and show up fast if there’s a problem. Honestly, I haven't run into a single sketchy situation the entire time I've lived here.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Since Paderborn is a pretty small student town, it completely lacks the massive, cheap food scene you get in bigger student hubs like Aachen or Göttingen. That's exactly why I gave the Indian food options a low 2-star rating. Honestly, if you want a decent taste of home, a basic meal at the few Indian spots in town will easily run you 16 to 20 euros a head, which completely destroys a student budget. Because of that, I just cook at home most days and grab my spices from the small local Asian/Indian grocery shops. When I am too lazy to cook and don't want to eat at the campus Mensa, my only cheap options are the endless Döner and falafel pocket joints or quick pizza slices scattered around the center.

Tips: The university is research-oriented. Since there are many students coming to apply for accommodation, you will get an acceptance letter. Apply for a working student job under your faculty. The chances of getting it are high. Try to apply for a thesis as soon as you meet the requirements under the faculty where you did your project, seminar, and more than 3 subjects.
Likes (Safety): It's been 3 years in Paderborn, and I haven't experienced any danger. I can go out alone at 3 am without any worries. It's especially safe for girls. The police are very responsive if there are any issues. I live near the university, so I felt safe.
Dislikes (Internships): We don't have a compulsory internship at our university. If we apply, it will be our volunteer work. If you are willing to do an internship, go ahead, but while applying to a company, ask whether it's compulsory or not. If not, the chances of getting in are lower. So I rated it as 2. Instead, join as a work-student, which is similar to gaining experience.

Tips: Yes, there was a cultural shift for sure, but I would say the transition was rather smooth. There is a large Indian community here who are all very helpful, and they made my early days quite easy. No, I didn't get any scholarship. I would say I am very satisfied with my choices for my university, course, and country. One thing that I would suggest to others looking to come to Germany is to try and invest more time learning the German language, as that's what helps you immensely in your day-to-day life, and I would say it has a heavy impact when it comes to looking for full-time job roles, as they do filter out candidates based on their German language proficiency.
Likes (Indian Food): There are 2-3 Indian restaurants in the city; also, there's a store called SNS that sells Indian spices and other food items, so one has access to everything needed to be able to cook the same meals that they did back home. I prefer cooking myself.
Dislikes (Internships): I knocked the rating down because Paderborn doesn’t really have big MNCs or tech companies partnering directly with the uni to hand out internships. You're basically left on your own to hunt for roles, send out cold applications, and handle the whole job search yourself. The one saving grace, though, is that we have the Fraunhofer research institute sitting right on the same campus. For a computer science student, that is huge because a ton of us end up landing working student positions (Werkstudent) over there. So while industry connections from the uni side are pretty lacking, having a massive research hub next door gives you a solid backup option to get experience.

Likes (Value for money): Because it is a public university, it is completely tuition-free for international students. There is only a minor semester contribution fee required, which is incredibly valuable since it fully covers the cost of public transportation across the entire region in Germany. This makes the overall return on investment exceptional for anyone studying on a student budget.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Most restaurants serve very limited Indian food options, and the authentic taste is often missing. Because of this, I usually prefer to cook my own meals at home. Eating out frequently is also quite expensive and not sustainable for a student budget on a daily basis.

Likes (Public transportation): Paderborn city is small and well-connected by public transportation. The university is quite centrally located. The ticket is included in the semester contribution. The Deutschland ticket can be used to travel anywhere in Germany for local buses and trains.
Dislikes (Internships): It is difficult to apply for internships in the companies near the university since internships are not mandatory. The companies prefer students who need mandatory internships for completion of their course. Not many companies are located in Paderborn. You will have to travel to bigger cities for student jobs and internships.

Tips: Just a heads up, the local food and how insanely strict the rules are out here will probably give you a massive culture shock at first. It's definitely a weird adjustment, but you honestly get used to the whole vibe faster than you think. It takes a little time to get used to, but honestly, it’s not that bad because there are a ton of Indian restaurants and grocery shops right around the corner from campus. Having those nearby makes it super easy to grab a familiar meal or track down home ingredients whenever you start feeling homesick, which completely saves you during your first few months. Also, the main difference is how we behave in a public space, like speaking friendly or loudly might be normal, but here you should respect other people's personal space. 2. I did not avail myself of any scholarship. 3. The university is awesome; my course was completely English-taught, so I did not face any difficulties, and the teaching staff is supportive.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): The city is quite small and friendly, so in case you want to settle permanently, the rent is cheaper than compared to other big cities. Also, the commute to other parts is really good. There is no hassle with the immigration office or the appointments.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Generally, you don't need a company to provide you any kind of sponsor document; you can get the work visa or the blue card based on your job contact. The main jobs are all IT or computer science-related. Companies offer around 40K-55K Euro based on your position and experience.

Tips: The university itself is really good in terms of studies, but it is the job scenario that anyone should be careful of. Any courses that are being offered are really great compared to India, where you might not get this much detailed studies and won't learn what you can learn here.
Likes (Safety): Paderborn city itself is one of the safest cities compared to other metropolitan cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt or Munich. I personally never heard about anyone getting discriminated against or being harassed in here. These things are not that common here.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): I saw my friends completing their master's and still not getting jobs for 1 or even 2 years. I mean, eventually you will get a job, but be prepared to do some odd jobs even after studying, as it is not guaranteed that you will get a job when you just finish.

Dislikes (Student Life): The course structure is demanding. There are many assignments and the subjects are challenging. Students need to dedicate a lot of time to studying, completing one subject per semester over four years. I wouldn't recommend this university if you're looking to enjoy and travel. While you can make friends and participate in events completing a Master's degree might be difficult.

Many medium and large companies in Germany offer visa sponsorship especially in the IT automotive and finance sectors but not all small companies do. Typical roles include Software Developer, Data Analyst, Electrical Engineer and Business Analyst. Starting salaries typically range from 45,000 to 60,000 euros per year depending on position and experience.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are very limited options for food from my home country. Even when available, the taste is not authentic, and the quality is inconsistent. There are mostly German, Italian and Turkish restaurants nearby. Prices vary: Budget options, such as Doner and Pizza, cost around 5-10 euros, mid-range options, such as Pasta, Schnitzel, are 10-20 euros, and higher-end places are 25 euros and above. I prefer cooking at home. It's more affordable, and I can prepare food that tastes closer to what I'm used to.

Interesting learning experience, but not easy.
Tips: The courses are not extremely difficult, but it's also not possible to pass without putting in any effort. You have to work pretty hard to get very good grades. A major positive change is that I am no longer afraid of speaking up and asking questions during lectures. The professors were very encouraging and receptive to even the most minor doubts. Most of the internship opportunities I've found are from the career fair on campus, rather than the student jobs portal. The career fair is hosted once or twice a year on campus. Also, I've had some luck finding internships on LinkedIn. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my experiences.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Most of the professors I’ve interacted with are very approachable and passionate about the subjects they teach. I found almost all of the courses I attended to be very interesting. However, the professors also have high expectations, so be sure to attend the first few lectures to see if the course is the right fit for you.
