Is There Any Change in dMAT Exam Pattern?

No, there is no major change in the dMAT exam pattern. The exam continues to have two parts - the Core Module and the Subject Module. The Core Module tests general study aptitude, while the Subject Module evaluates subject-specific knowledge and application skills. Candidates who are planning to study in Germany are advised to prepare according to the latest official preparation materials released for their selected subject module.

dMAT Core Module Exam Pattern

The dMAT Core Module measures general study aptitude. It consists of three separate sections that test logical reasoning, numerical ability, and analytical thinking. Every candidate has to appear for the Core Module regardless of the Master's programme they are applying for.

Each section contains around 20 questions/tasks. Candidates are expected to solve the questions mentally as no notes or rough work are permitted during the examination.

dMAT Subject Module Exam Pattern

After completing the Core Module, candidates will have a 30-minute break. They then appear for the Subject Module based on the Master's programme they have selected in German universities. Unlike the Core Module, this section tests subject knowledge along with the ability to apply concepts to practical academic problems.

Available Subject Modules

Computer Science

Data Science

Chemistry (Battery Science & Technology)

Physics (Battery Science & Technology)

Computer Science (Battery Science & Technology)

Electrical Engineering (Battery Science & Technology)

Mechanical Engineering (Battery Science & Technology)

The Subject Module contains knowledge-based questions based on realistic academic problems. Instead of testing memorised facts, the exam focuses on how candidates apply concepts learned during their previous studies to solve subject-related questions.

dMAT Marking Scheme & Score Calculation

The dMAT marking scheme is simple and transparent. The exam contains only single-choice questions, and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. After the exam, candidates receive two different scores for each module along with an overall score. Based on this, they will be enrolled in German universities

Unlike many competitive entrance exams, the dMAT exam does not deduct marks for wrong answers. Therefore, candidates should attempt every question, even if they are unsure of the correct answer.

What is dMAT Percentile Rank?

The percentile rank shows how a candidate performed compared to all other test takers.

For example, if a candidate receives a percentile rank of 70, it means the candidate performed better than or equal to 70% of all participants, while only 30% scored higher.

What is the dMAT Score?

The dMAT Score is a standardised score ranging from 0 to 200. The average score is 100. Universities use this score along with the percentile rank while evaluating applications for Master's admission.

dMAT Syllabus 2026

The dMAT syllabus is divided into two major parts. The Core Module focuses on general academic aptitude, while the Subject Module tests subject-specific knowledge based on the programme selected by the candidate.

dMAT Core Module Syllabus

The Core Module consists of three sections. Each section measures different reasoning and analytical skills required for Master's level studies.

The Subject Module does not test memorised facts alone. Most questions are based on practical subject-related situations where candidates have to analyse the information and select the correct answer.

dMAT Sample Question Types

The dMAT exam contains different types of reasoning and subject-based questions. Candidates should understand these question formats before appearing for the examination.

Candidates must note that the sample questions given below are not the exact questions asked in the dMAT exam; this is just for giving you a reference. These dMAT sample questions are prepared using the official Preparatory Materials for Test Takers published by g.a.s.t. (the TestDaF Institute)

Figure Sequences

Candidates are shown a sequence of figures. They have to identify the logical pattern and choose the next figure in the sequence. Questions may involve movement, rotation, colour changes, reflections, or multiple objects moving together.

Sample Question: Figure Sequences

Observe the sequence below. The black circle follows a logical movement pattern. Select the figure that should come next.

Figure 1

● □ □

□ □ □

□ □ □

Figure 2

□ ● □

□ □ □

B

□ □ □

□ □ □

□ □ ●

C

□ □ □

● □ □

□ □ □

D

□ □ □

□ ● □

□ □ □

Answer: A

Explanation: The black circle moves one position clockwise along the outer boundary of the grid. After reaching the top-right corner in Figure 3, it moves to the middle-right position. Therefore, option A is the correct answer.

Mathematical Equations

Questions consist of multiple equations with unknown variables. Candidates have to solve the equations mentally and identify the correct values for each variable. Basic algebra and logical reasoning are tested in this section.

Sample Question: Mathematical Equations

Solve the following system of equations. Each letter represents an integer between 1 and 20. Select the correct value of A.

2 × A = B
B + 4 = C
C − A = 8

What is the value of A?

  • A. 2
  • B. 4
  • C. 6
  • D. 8

Answer: B. 4

Explanation:

From the first equation,
B = 2 × A

Substitute B into the second equation:
C = 2A + 4

Now substitute C into the third equation:
(2A + 4) − A = 8

A + 4 = 8

A = 4

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.

Latin Squares

In this section, candidates are given a 5×5 grid containing letters. Each letter can appear only once in every row and column. Candidates have to determine the missing letter using logical elimination.

Sample Question: Latin Squares

In the grid below, each letter (A, B, C, D, and E) can appear only once in each row and once in each column. Determine which letter should replace the question mark (?).

A

B

C

D

E

C

D

E

A

C

D

E

A

B

D

E

A

B

?

E

A

B

C

D

What should replace the question mark (?)

  • A. A
  • B. B
  • C. C
  • D. E

Answer: C. C

Explanation:

In the fourth row, the letters D, E, A, and B are already present. The only missing letter is C. The fifth column also contains E, A, B, and D, so C is the only letter that can replace the question mark.

Subject Module Questions

The Subject Module presents a subject-specific academic problem followed by multiple single-choice questions. These questions test conceptual understanding and the ability to apply knowledge instead of recalling memorised facts.

Sample Question: Subject Module

The dMAT Subject Module is different for every candidate and depends on the Master's programme selected during the application process. For example, candidates applying for Data Science in Germany will receive Data Science questions, while those applying for Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Battery Science & Technology will receive questions related to their chosen subject.

In this section, candidates are presented with a subject-specific passage, diagram, table, formula, graph, or problem statement followed by multiple single-choice questions. The questions test the ability to apply subject knowledge rather than memorise facts.

Instructions:

  • Read the given passage or problem carefully.
  • Each question has four answer options.
  • Only one option is correct.
  • Questions may include figures, tables, formulas, graphs, or code snippets depending on the selected subject.
  • The Subject Module lasts for 90 minutes.
  • If you are unsure of an answer, make your best guess as there is no negative marking.
  • Notes and rough paper are not allowed during the examination.

Sample Question (Data Science)

Scenario:

A retail company wants to predict whether a customer will purchase a product after visiting its website. The company has collected data such as customer age, previous purchases, time spent on the website, and number of pages viewed. A Data Scientist plans to train a machine learning model using this historical data.

Question:

Which type of machine learning problem does this scenario represent?

  • A. Clustering
  • B. Classification
  • C. Dimensionality Reduction
  • D. Association Rule Mining

Answer: B. Classification

Explanation:

The objective is to predict whether a customer will purchase a product or not. Since the output belongs to predefined categories (Purchase or No Purchase), the problem is a classification task.
