What is a Dropbox for US Visa?

Dropbox or interview waiver in the USA is applicable for international students who have already been to the US hold a US visa currently or have a pre-existing USA visa. The interview waiver is applicable for nonimmigrant visa holders in the US for all visa classifications except for B visa holders in the USA. The following sections describe a couple of procedures to be followed.

Who is Eligible for Dropbox for US Visa?

Nonimmigrant US visa holders, like students holding any of these visas like an F-1 visa, or an M-1 visa or J-1 visa or others are eligible. This new policy applies to individuals who have previously been issued a US visa for studying, regardless of whether the prior visa has expired. Those whose most recent visa application was refused do not qualify for a Dropbox in USA.

Additionally, those whose visas are expiring and are applying for a new one within 48 months of their most recent nonimmigrant visa’s expiration date are eligible for Dropbox.

Once students submit their visa applications to the Embassy, they may automatically be eligible for Dropbox in the USA. Additionally, students will be eligible for an interview waiver if they also meet the following criteria:

  • Applying within their country of nationality or residence.
  • Have never been refused a visa before (unless refusal was overcome by the applicant or waived after fulfilling additional formalities).
  • There is no potential ineligibility which could pose a threat to rejection.

Applications that are rejected can also be called for a face-to-face interview. This is entirely at the discretion of the consular officers, who may or may not choose to take this step.

Please note: Applicants are encouraged to check the embassy and consulate websites for tracking their information about visa application requirements and procedures. And prepare themselves in case any additional submissions are needed.

Dropbox Procedure for US Visa

Here’s the procedure for Dropbox for US visas for those renewing their visas:

  • Fill out your DS-160 Form, then create an online profile in the U.S. Visa Information Service based on your country.
  • Applicants will be asked questions to determine their eligibility for the interview waiver.
  • Based on the responses to the questions in the yes/no format, you can either qualify or not qualify. If you do, you will receive a “Dropbox Confirmation Letter”.
  • Students will not be called for an in-person interview; instead, they will be required to submit all necessary documentation to a specified Dropbox location.
  • After reviewing your application, consular officers will stamp your passport if it's approved, or leave it unstamped if the application is rejected.

Ideally, this is the procedure for Dropbox for US student visa holders seeking an extension. If they qualify, they can skip the interview and directly get a renewed visa to stay in the USA.

Documents Required for US Visa Dropbox

Students who wish for an interview waiver or Dropbox should attach the following supporting documents:

  • Applicant's current and all old passports
  • A completed DS-160 confirmation page.
  • I20 - 2 copies
  • SEVIS Fee
  • Passport(s) - with all existing or preexisting US visas
  • 2 passport-size photos in US visa format

If all the documents are complete and support your application, you can qualify for Dropbox for a US visa. In case of discrepancies, you can be called for an interview.
