Gaurav shares his experience of studying in London and enjoying the city life
Seven years ago I decided to pursue my higher studies abroad and in autumn 2011, I moved to London. As I prepared to graduate from Pune University’s Computer Science department, I realized my pathway to studying abroad was not typical. Born and raised in Nashik, India it was clear that I always wanted to expose myself to cultures beyond my own. Earlier, I was studying masters in India and just one day prior to my exam I decided to do my Masters in the United Kingdom. It was because I was scared of the high unemployment rate and education quality here, I found myself aspiring to become more than my surroundings.
Despite many oppositional factors that contributed to tears, ripped applications, struggle for finance, long hot tea breaks, struggle to pass IELTS exam and even fights with my parents. I got all the funding and social support needed to study abroad. After a sleepless night and emotional goodbye at the airport, I finally boarded the plane. While travelling I was scared and thought about my future. I did not even realise when I go to sleep. I got up after the pilot announcement. I saw something out that I never going to forget in my whole life. It was London city’s sky view. I could not even believe. Suddenly, I told myself one thing - I want to settle and spend my whole life in this dream city. Finally, after a nine hour journey, I reached my destination. The wonderful city of London, England. Not knowing the difference between British English and American English, I found myself in a seven-day culture shock about the cost of a pound, the under seasoned fish and chips, and mere confusion about being in a new place without my family. Being away from home for the first time ignited anger in me, gradually, which changed into gratitude and I thanked all my friends who supported me through this journey.
Shortlisting the university
Since I received offer letters from world-class universities in the UK. I found London Met University perfect, where I do not have to think about other things like academics, accommodations, costs, and funding or social life. Actually, I would have preferred not to study in London, because it is considered very expensive. However, now I am really glad that I decided to pursue my studies here. I love the city and all the possibilities that it offers. Finding accommodation was very easy as your university can help you with that. I found one through the university’s website and I really enjoyed living in London. Having the possibility to walk next to the Thames or shop at Oxford Street is amazing! In addition to this, I became fully immersed in London’s culture with weekly excursions. Visiting places in London is very easy as London has the best public transport service. You just need an Oyster and a map and you can go to any place you want.
Faculty and teaching methods
Pretty good. Teachers have bags full of relevant experience and enthusiasm. One visiting lecturer was fantastic, his superbly organised, simple presentations with working diagrams were helpful in understanding complex topics. He gave personal attention when the class as a whole for one part of the module performed poorly on something.
Enjoying the city life
It is London what can I say - it’s busy, posh and the people are so friendly. London is famous for its nightlife, offering world-class London theatres, top clubs in the West End, an alternative Camden scene, trendy nights out in Shoreditch and more. From evenings of comedy, theatre, music or a night out in the town, there are plenty of fun things to do in London at night. London is not short of restaurants, and excellent ones at that. Knowing which to try and what to order can be tricky, but there are some dishes that simply can’t be missed. Also, you can get food delivered from almost anywhere pretty much 24/7.

Finding new friends
It’s completely horrible living without friends in London especially when you are an international student and living far from your home. But it's not hard to make friends here. It completely depends on communication and indulging with new people. I was lucky to find so many good friends in my accommodation and university.I enjoyed a lot and go clubbing or to a pub, visited different places, go shopping and do so many fun activities with new friends. We are not together now but still, I am so lucky to have these crazy and party folks in my life. They still care about me and wants me to be in London after all these years.
Being the largest city in the UK, London is also home to one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world. This wide range of cultures and languages is celebrated in London in many different ways – mainly with amazing food and lively festivals. I am still amazed and in love with London. After all, London is my home away from home! Studying abroad was one of the best learning experiences I had. I highly recommend studying abroad. You can improve a second language, learn a lot from new people and get to know a different culture.
Choosing between on-campus and off-campus accommodation
There are many private accommodations in London, but they are too expensive compared to sharing rooms and houses. You can also find share rooms and houses through www.gumtree.com. I would suggest students go for a shared apartment as they are less expensive. Also, you can easily find your own country people to stay with. You won’t face the problem of food and culture as well.
Factors to consider before selecting the location
I would suggest students to check the commuting distance and time taken between your accommodation and the university. Also check nearby shops, restaurants, and public transport availability. Please check for crime rate and security service at your location. The best thing is when you choose any accommodation, your landlord provides all the essential facilities such as the internet, basic amenities, new beds etc.
