Tohoku University History
Tohoku Imperial University was founded on Jun 22, 1907, by the Meiji Government as the third imperial university after Tokyo University and Kyoto Imperial University. It is known to be the first university in Japan to accept both female and foreign students in 1913. Teaching and Research activities had started in Sendai in the year 1911 and when the university was established, it only had one faculty which was the College of Agriculture. The college was orginally founded in 1975 as the Sapporo Agricultural College. The School of Science was established in the year 1911, School of Medicine in 1915, Faculty of Engineering in 1919 and the Faculty of Law and Literature in 1922. Later in 1949, a Faculty of Education was added to the university's system, Dentistry in 1965 and Pharmacy in the year 1972.
