There are multiple Institute of Technology and Polytechnics in New Zealand. These institutes aim to provide industry and job-based vocational studies. In recent years, these ITPs have added more programs focused on practical education, business and technology. 

List of ITPs in New Zealand

In New Zealand, ITPs are government-owned and funded polytechnics which provide cost-effective education. For applied courses, polytechnics are preferred over university education as they place more importance on preparing students for joining the workforce. Because of their emphasis on practical learning, a lot of international students who wish to gain employment right after graduating, prefer enrolling at ITPs. There are around 16 ITPs in New Zealand and a lot of these institutions admit international students for study. Here is a list of ITPs in New Zealand:

Eastern Institute of TechnologyHawkes Bay 

EIT or Eastern Institute of Technology has been ranked as one of New Zealand’s top-rated New Zealand institutes of technology and polytechnics for research in the Performance Based Research Fund. It offers over 130 qualifications from certificates and diplomas, to degrees and postgraduate levels at campuses in Hawkes Bay, Tairawhiti, and Auckland. The institute offers work-ready courses leading to job opportunities after graduation. In 2015, more than 10,000 students were enrolled at EIT, including 440 international students from 40 different countries. 

Manukau Institute of Technology, Auckland 

Manukau Institute of Technology is a leader in technical and vocational education, delivering a range of academic qualifications. This institute has six campuses across Auckland and is considered New Zealand's top institute of technology. The institution follows a balance of theory and applied to learn and offers flexible qualifications and career paths.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, Nelson 

NMIT or commonly known as Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology has been awarded category 1 status for educational performance by the New Zealand qualification authority (NZQA). The institute is known for its state-of-the-art infrastructure. Students here gain real-life, practical, hands-on experience and valuable industry contacts through work placements.

Northland PolytechnicWhangarei 

Northland Polytechnic or NorthTec provides programs ranging from foundation, certificate, diploma and degree levels. It has campuses and learning centres across Northland which makes it unique in its own sense. 

Otago Polytechnic, Auckland 

Otago Polytechnic is the top in the New Zealand polytechnic sector for qualification completion by the New Zealand government's Tertiary Education Commission. There are a total of 6700 full and part-time enrolled students and 700 full and part-time staff members. Student satisfaction ratings are around 90 per cent and, more importantly, international student satisfaction ratings of 98 per cent.  

Southern Institute of Technology, Invercargill 

SIT or Southern Institute of Technology has four campuses and over 13,000 enrolled students. The institute offers more than 180 programs that are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority listed on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. The institute has flexible programs and offers multiple intakes every year. 

Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, Wellington 

The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Institute is New Zealand's leading distance learning provider with an average yearly enrollment of 34,000 students. The curriculum is based on learning resources custom-designed for distance learners, with telephonic and email access to the lecturer. Open Polytechnic has adopted internationally proven models for distance learning course design, student support and quality control. 

Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland 

Unitec Institute of Technology is the largest institute of technology, with more than 20,000 students enrolled in over 150 work-oriented programs. It offers employment-focused education with a dynamic, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable approach. 

Universal College of Learning, Palmerston 

Universal College of Learning or UCOL qualifications are regarded in high esteem by the community and employers. The institute recruits industry-experienced lecturers, and the curriculum combines practical experience and a theory that the program contains.  

Waikato Institute of Technology, Hamilton 

Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) was founded to provide technical and trade training in the Waikato region. The total number of enrolled students is 26,362 and the total number of international students is around 1,127.

Wellington Institute of Technology, Wellington 

WelTec or Wellington Institute of Technology is an internationally recognized centre of excellence in vocational education, with a focus on industry-oriented programs with real-time experience. There are over 11,000 part and full-time enrolled students at WelTec 

Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, New Plymouth 

The Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is the largest tertiary education institution in New PlymouthIt is the 13th-largest technical institute in New Zealand. The institute aims to promote a research-centric culture.

Ara Institute of Canterbury, Christchurch

Ara Institute of Canterbury is the largest vocational training institute in the South Island of New Zealand which offers practical, hands-on training and education in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, Rotorua

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is the largest tertiary provider in the Bay of Plenty and the third largest institute of technology in New Zealand. The university is home to more than 14,000 students including more than 1,400 international students, and more than 1,000 staff, and offers more than 150 programmes ranging from certificate to post-graduate level. Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is an amalgamation of two high-performing institutions – Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga, and Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua in May 2016

Whitireia New Zealand, Wellington

Established in 1986, Whitireia New Zealand is now the first choice for over 7,752 students. Over 120 programs are offered covering degree, diploma, certificate, master’s, and postgraduate levels along with a number of short courses. All programs have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic, West Coast

The 16th of the ITPs lot is Tai Poutini Polytechnic on the West Coast and with other campuses in Wanaka, Christchurch and Auckland. There are a variety of courses offered at Tai Potini Polytechnic across 11 areas of study. Some of the popular courses offered at this institute are - business, engineering, tourism, automation, engineering and others.
