University of Auckland History
Auckland University College was established by an Act of Parliament in 1882. The University of Auckland held its formal opening on May 21, 1883, and is one of the oldest universities in New Zealand. In the Choral venue, which at the time was the biggest venue in Auckland. Additionally, William Jervois, the governor has announced that the college was open to women and men, and to all classes.
The 1930s & 40s saw a surge in academic research at the institute, while the institute continued to grow after the second world war, with new buildings established on campus, in the two decades that followed the second world war.
From 2000 onwards, the institute has expanded to become the largest university in New Zealand, hosting over 40,000 students as part of its five Auckland based campuses.
