Hoping to achieve something big, I came to Australia to pursue my master degree and reach a position where everyone who knows me can feel proud of me and my decision to study abroad.

Currency you need to carry

It depends on how prepared you come with the pre-booked arrangements. However, you must carry some cash and a multi-currency travel card. Initially, expect your expenses to be higher because it will take time for you to understand and learn how to spend and save money. It is normal. Initially, I spent too much money, but eventually, I learned how much to spend on necessities and how to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Important documents to carry with you

Your Passport, Copy of Visa (an electronic copy is acceptable) and your boarding passes (all boarding passes from your departure to destination).

Arranging food initially

I am a vegetarian and initially, I prepared some home cooked food for myself. That is actually the best way to survive for at least 5-7 days in any country which you know nothing about. Then, you can research a bit about how you can manage food and other expenses. The food here in Sydney is quite expensive as compared to other cities. Thus, it is important to research about the grocery stores and compare prices initially unless you get settled with a part-time job. The best thing is that you can bring as much food as you want from your home country in accordance with the airline regulations. One must bring some basic cooking utensils to save money.

Making your first set of friends

Making friends completely depends on how you interact and indulge in conversations during the first few days in school. However, most of the international students are in the same situation as you are. The country, city, university, people etc., everything is new for them as well. So, it is a plus point when you try to make new friends. People here are very friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to help anyone in need.

Figuring out travel and transport options

This depends on the location you reside. Generally, trains and buses are the most efficient modes of transportation. However, you can expect around $20-$60 weekly expenditure on transportation depending on the distance between your residence and the university.

List of Universities in Sydney (Australia)

Interact with people around you like your friends or teachers. Most of the universities provide counselling to tackle such situations. It is normal and you will be fine. Give some time to yourself to settle down and get used to the new surroundings.

Options to stay connected with your family

The internet is easily accessible in the city with all the major train stations, malls, and universities providing free Wi-Fi facilities. Also, most of the accommodations have Wi-Fi connections. Mobile service providers also provide great deals which helps you in connecting to your family easily.

Places to hang out

Restaurants, cinemas, sports events, pubs, bars, etc., everything is available coupled with hundreds of scenic beauties throughout the city. The local culture and tradition can be enjoyed in some parts while other parts give a modern touch to the city. Food, beer, and sports can be easily used to describe a typical Aussie life.

Shopping for essentials

There are many Indian stores located in different parts of the city which makes it easy to not miss Indian food. The prices are a bit higher. But you can get almost everything you need to cook Indian food. Alternatively, there are food stores, supermarkets (specifically have an aisle for Indian food) everywhere within walking distances from wherever you reside.
