One more Indian student dies in US; 11th so far

The US is among the top choices for Indian students who seek to study abroad. However, this year, multiple deaths of Indian students in the country have sent shockwaves to the Indian American community and other aspirants back in India. Adding to the fear, another student is found dead in Ohio. The student is identified as Mohammed Abdul Arfath who was studying at Cleveland University, Ohio. He had been missing since March 7, 2024, and his parents had also received a ransom call demanding nearly a lakh rupees.

The Consulate General of India, New York has confirmed the death of the missing Indian student from Hyderabad.

"Anguished to learn that Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath, for whom search operation was underway, was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio. Our deepest condolences to Mr Mohammed Arfath’s family. @IndiainNewYork is in touch with local agencies to ensure thorough investigation into Mr Mohammed Abdul Arfath’s death. We are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family to transport his mortal remains to India," reads the message by the Consulate General of India in New York on X platform.

Mohammed Abdul Arfath went to the US last May to pursue a master's degree in Information Technology at the University of Ohio.

“He [Mr. Arfath] is my only son. He said he was missing us and his friends and wanted to come home. I told him that he could do so during his vacations, and if needed, I would send him the airfare. The last time I spoke to him was on March 7, but that was only for a few seconds. He called his friend the next day and spoke to him. I am told that a detective [a police officer] is handling the case,” said his father when he was missing, as reported by The Hindu.

Back to back deaths of 11 Indians in US: Who is responsible?

All these are not natural deaths and there are so many unanswered questions pertaining to the deaths of Indian students in the US. An investigation is going on in this case, but the other 10 deaths are also believed to be mysterious. Are Indian students not safe in the US, and what's the reason behind this unsafety? Ex-PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi's recent advise to the Indian American community hints at an unsafe environment around the community.

She advised the community to be "watchful", respect local laws and urged the students not to engage in drugs or excessive drinking to ensure their safety and security in the USA.

"The reason I'm recording this video is to talk to all of you, all you young people who are looking to come to the United States or are here already pursuing your studies because I've been reading and listening to all the news about several examples of Indian students finding themselves in unfortunate situations," she said through a 10-minute long video.
