Origin of the University of Wroclaw can be traced back to the establishment of Leopoldina University through the foundation document issued by Emperor Leopold I Habsburg on 21st October 1702. It started operating on 15th November of the same year and Johannes Adrian von Plencken was appointed as the chancellor. In 1811, the university was re-established as Universitas Litterarum Vratislaviensis by merging with the Protestant Viadrina University. It was renamed as Schlesische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Wroclaw in 1911. In 1945, the Soviet Red Army acquired the city and reorganized the institution like the University of Wroclaw granting it the designation of a Polish state university. Currently, it is counted amongst the best public research universities in Poland.
Situated in Wroclaw, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, the University of Wroclaw campus has world-class infrastructure and offers a number of modern amenities. The campus features spacious classrooms, a huge library, well-equipped labs, vast study spaces, and student lounges. It also offers excellent residential facilities with its five comfortable co-educational dormitories: Kredka, Dwudziestolatka, Oówek, Sowianka, and Parawanowiec. Besides, the campus also provides students with facilities to play various sports like aerobics, badminton, karate, basketball, cross-country running, athletics, snowboard, skiing, football, swimming, volleyball, chess, table tennis, tennis, rowing, floorball, and climbing. Further, it is home to 170 student groups and organizations.
The university offers around 80 bachelor’s and 60 master’s programs through its 10 faculties in various fields like biotechnology, engineering, chemistry, computer science, business, political science, journalism, law, tourism, philosophy, and sociology. The medium of instruction is Polish in most programs, however, it also offers around 30 programs in English. The institution is home to over 19,900 full-time students, more than 5,600 part-time students, and over 1,900 teachers. It has collaborations with numerous international universities across 26 countries including the U.S., China, Japan, France, Spain, Russia, and Peru. These collaborations present students with an opportunity to take part in exceptional study abroad programs.
Numerous notable people have graduated from the University of Wroclaw. Jakub Krogulec is the publisher of PolskieGryWideo.pl. Adam Flamma is the editor-in-chief of PolskieGryWideo.pl. Magdalena Knedler is a speech therapist and the author of the books 'Pan Darcy nie ?yje', 'Nic oprócz strachu' and 'Winda'. Natalia Grosiak is a songwriter and vocalist who co-founded the group Mikromusic. Maria Stasiuk is a biophysicist and biochemist responsible for numerous scientific publications in international magazines and many patents. Ewelina Kordiak-Go??bska is an accomplished speech therapist who is the president of Logocentrum. The university has many other distinguished alumni.
