History
Before becoming a university, it began as the Sunderland Technical College in 1901. The institution delivered high-quality vocational programs to support and develop the skills of the locals. In 1934, it was recognised as the only university in the country that offered placements as part of the curriculum. It got renamed to the Sunderland Polytechnic in 1969. In 1992, it received university status and took over its present-day name.
