Genuine Student Requirement for Australian Student Visa 2025

In place of GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant), a new requirement called the Genuine Student (GS) requirement has come into force for 2024 admissions. This requirement is effective for subclass (500) student visa applications filed on or after 23 March 2024 to study in Australia. Check out the requirements in the article.

Full-time students applying for a 5-year long subclass (500) visa to study in Australia have to fulfil the comprehensive GS requirement from now onwards in place of GTE previously. The GS requirement includes showing that the applicant is genuinely interested in studying at Australian universities. The GS requirement will be an important section to submit to assess students' genuity to study in Australia. There will be a set of questions and a couple of documents, also. What is a Genuine Student Requirement?

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is a comprehensive assessment of Australian student visa applications - Subclass 500 visa. This new requirement has been introduced to include those students who wish to study and stay in Australia for work and further apply for a PR in Australia. The GS assesses students based on different parameters like - their ties with family, financial circumstances, employment details, reasons to study in Australia and other related information important for sharing.  

Evidence Proof for Genuine Student Requirement

When filing your student visa application to study in Australia, you must enclose evidence for the following information:

Previous Study Evidence for GS (Out of Australia)

This includes documentation submission for:

• Academic transcripts showing achieved grades/scores
• Educational institutions and the length of study
• Certificates of attainment 
• Also, the length of study is mandatory

Previous Study Evidence in Australia​​​ for GS 

If you have studied in Australia before as an international student, then the following submissions will be required for the online application:

• The records of the study in Australia
• Reasons for change of course and/or education providers (if any)
• Details on course progress if still enrolled 
• Study gaps of more than 2 months during an academic year
• Any other information the applicant considers relevant to their study record in Australia

Current Employment Status Evidence​​ for GS

If you are employed currently, then the following details and evidence will be required for the application:

• Details of current employer and the company’s address
• Period of employment
• Details of the position worked on and also held
• The name and contact details of someone who can confirm the declared employment.

Home Country or Country of Residence Circumstances for GS

Applicants must justify if they choose not to pursue similar educational opportunities in their home country. They should elaborate on their personal circumstances, such as familial bonds, community connections, and employment prospects, which may influence their decision to study abroad rather than locally.

Economic Circumstances in Home Country or Country of Residence for GS

To prove economic conditions, the applicants will have to submit the following documents:

• Documents of employment or business activities for 12 months before applying.
• Potential employment offers with salary and benefits, after course completion.
• Financial documents like Income tax returns or bank statements.

Applicants from countries experiencing political turmoil, civil unrest, or compulsory military service obligations must provide a detailed explanation and supporting documentation for their motivation to depart their home nation. Situations that could significantly compel an individual to seek relocation should be substantiated with relevant evidence.

Genuine Student Requirement Application Questions

The following questions are asked in the online application for an Australian student visa, and students have to answer them in English in about 150 words:

1. Details of the applicant’s current circumstances: Here you will have to talk about your ties to your family, community, employment and economic circumstances. 
2. Explain why you want to study this course in Australia with this university: Here, you’ll have to explain your understanding of the requirements of the intended course and details about studying and living in Australia.
3. Explain how completing the course will be beneficial: Share your thoughts on your aspirations and how you need to pursue and complete this course in Australia.
4. If there are any other important details you would like to include, then you can include in the section. 

Instructions to Answer GS Requirements Questions

While answering these questions, ensure that:

• They are not generic or vague.
• If you make a claim, then support the claim.
• Be genuine in your answers and avoid copying and pasting from sources. 
• You are genuine with the claims you make and the answers you write. 
• The genuine student is assessed based on the overall circumstances of the applicant.

Genuine Student Assessment Criteria

The GS assessment criterion assesses students’ intention and genuity to study in Australia. It considers factors including the applicant’s - circumstances, immigration history and compliance with visa conditions.

If there is a need for pathway programs, the criteria above will approve the availability of post-study pathways for eligible applicants. To elaborate more, the following areas have been given below for reference for GS assessment. 

1. Situations Home country (or country of residence)

Based on the situation of the applicant’s home country, GS assesses:

• Understanding of the applicant’s ties to their home country.
• The economic circumstances of the applicants also play a crucial role in meeting the GS requirements.
• Also, GS will assess the applicant’s home country’s military service commitments and political or civil unrest in the present case scenario.

2. Potential Situation in Australia

To understand if the applicant can be a potential candidate for studying in Australia, the following requirements for GS must be elaborated upon:

• The level of knowledge for the chosen course and about the education provider in Australia. 
• Previous study and qualifications
• Level of research work undertaken for the chosen course of study and understanding the living arrangements in Australia.

3. Value​​ of Course in Future

Applicants planning to study in Australia will have to prove if the course chosen is beneficial for them in the long run. Here is how GS assesses this criterion:

• If the course opted is in sync with the current level of education. Secondly, check if the chosen course will help them obtain employment or improve their employment prospects in their home country. 
• Also, if the chosen course is relevant to the proposed future employment, wherever they wish to work.
• Finally, based on the applicant’s qualifications from the course of study, understand the expected salary or any other benefits they may be eligible for.

4. Immigration ​History

To study in Australia, visa officers always ensure the immigration history of the applicants. Here’s what all will be assessed in GS requirement: 

• The applicant’s visa and travel history for Australia and/or other countries.
• If there were any previous visa applications for Australia (or other countries).
• Any visa refusals or cancellations in the past.

If the applicant is a minor, i.e., 18 years or younger, visa officers will consider the intentions of the parent, legal guardian, or spouse to sponsor the visa in Australia.

Balanced Genuine Student Assessment Criteria

Keep in mind that case officers do not evaluate your Genuine Student criteria with a simplistic checklist. As stated in Ministerial Direction No. 106, they are required to use discretionary judgment. They must consider all the students’ materials and also make reasonable decisions within the Australian student visa processing timeline. For Australian visa officers, this entails:

• Suppose other aspects, such as a student’s study history and family ties, are well established. In that case, weaknesses in one area (such as financial evidence) do not significantly delay the application processing time for Australia student visa.
• Generalised or weak claims without any substantial evidence or documents, especially in such situations, since officers need to make quick decisions, may work against the student.
• Providing a straightforward explanation backed by credible evidence enables the officer to determine the applicant’s intentions and process the application without significant delays.
