University of Michigan History
It began as a preparatory school in 1817, before moving to its present-day location in Ann Arbor in 1837. 1841 saw the university begin offering post-secondary education. After nearly 140 years of its existence, the university opened its campus in Flint in 1956, which was soon followed by a campus in Dearborn in 1959.
It became the first medical school to start its own hospital and offer a course in the history of Higher Education in America, and among the very first institutions to admit women students in 1870.
